Sui Generis
I've been thinking recently and I was wondering. What makes someone beautiful, in your mind. Here in Kansas there is a huge difference between beaufitul and hot. People are called beautiful all the times for their looks, yet other things are called beautiful. It seems that beauty isn't just for human beings, which would be odd if beauty was refering to looks. I mean a baby being born is beautiful to most parents, and well its obviouse that a birth isn't exactly what I'd want to see in the morning after breakfast. Ya know? To me it just doesn't seem to be the looks ya know. Beautiful isn't hot. I mean if you think about it. When you go out and see a picture perfect sun rise, with the fog on the mountain and the smell in the air is almost sweet. Many people say thats beautiful. Well why is it? Is it because of the view, or is it that breath taking feeling you get when you see it. Suddenly you and nature are one, is that beauty? The sense of pride and joy knowing you're alive, is that beauty? Is beautiful just another word, or does it have an underlying meaning, does it hold a sort of prescence when giving to someone. Its just that you don't hear a lot of people say beautiful, well as much as you hear cute, sexy, hot, you get the idea. I mean sure theres rap songs about beautiful people, Marilyn Manson's song of course, and thousands of songs about beauty, but has any of them really defined beauty? Does beauty really have a definition? Is it looks? Or is it something else about the person (or thing) that makes them beautiful. I guess through all this mindless and pointless babbling what I'm trying to ask is: What is beautiful to you? Deep down in your own heart what do you think is beautiful, how do you use it? Bishie
I would make this post longer..but im REALLY supposed to be paying attention *looks nervously around her class* heh heh I dont think beauty can be defined, its EVERYWHERE. I believe only when you open your eyes and accept something, in whatever form its in..whatever/whoever it is. Then you can begin to understand true beauty, untill then.. well..its like not being able to see, your blinded to the truth and only choose to believe whats on the outside, the shell. I personally, can't describe beauty for myself. To me, i guess, a friend is beautifull..because they accept me for who i am, not what i may seem. Silence is beautifull..its so simple, it doesn't hide anything. Darkness is beautifull because secrets are intriguing. People who can love..and love completely..without jealousy, without hate. Thats beauty. As in look wise, beauty is only skin deep. You could be defined by society and "gorgous" but what good is that..if say, you go home..away from everyone else..and hurt yourself or someone else? Beauty..is learning to accept and understand
Justin
I think beauty is subjective...or "in the eye of the beholder." Honestly, when it comes to the opposite sex, physical beauty(while a good thing) isn't necessarily an absolute must. I could get a pretty girlfriend...they're a dime per dozen. But getting one with something beautiful on the inside is a little more difficult. In terms of general beauty: I find beauty everywhere in nature. A tree, when compared to a cold building, is beautiful. But there again, it's all subjective. :) -Justin

Guest Crimson Spider
Beauty is nothing but an illusion. Our minds are programmed by others at the start to tell what is beautiful or not. Over in egypt and other arabian countries, it is beautiful when you are fat and have no tan.

Red
Beautiful can be used in so many ways, like a lot of people have said here. You can say that a sunrise is beautiful, that your girlfriend is beautiful, etc. Then again, when you're talking about someone it doesn't have to be how they look. I mean, you can use it for how they look, it's completely valid, but if you say that the person on the inside is beautiful, it means something else. I know a beautiful person, both personality wise and looks wise, but the former means a heck of a lot more to me than the latter. I fell in love with the beauty of who she is.. am I making any sense? lol.
Does beauty really have a definition? Is it looks? Or is it something else about the person (or thing) that makes them beautiful.
Like I said before, it depends how you say it. "She looks really beautiful" and "She's such a beautiful person" would be two completely different things to me. Then again, it's different for everyone.
Dan L
In my opinion, the most beautiful thing a woman can have is faith. And I say that from my current situation :p so yeah Beauty is in God's creation. He made it and saw it was good. And he made us in his image. And thus, we see that it is good. From a Christian viewpoint, I think it's as simple as that ;)
Syn
Im with Red, I think >>; Depends what context its in. In my mind beautiful isnt all based on looks, I think lust and the like is based more on looks, I dunno. I also agree with masked man, the way we define beautiful, nowadays anyway, is mainly based on what other people around us think. Blegh to it all. WW2
Beauty is merely a concept brought about by preference. Whats beautiful to one person, may not be beautiful to another. Its just like the old saying, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder." But now in days the "eye of the beholder" has been influenced by the media and other people, to see only certain aspects of things as beautiful. Sara
*glances at Mitch* Anyway. I don't really use "beautiful" to refer to looks. I might let it slip sometimes, but I'll usually use cute, or pretty, or gorgeous...depending on the object in question. Beautiful is different. At the risk of sounding corny, I'll say that I classify it more as loving and kindness--One of the worst-looking people I know is also among the most beautiful, simply because of the kind of person he is.
Semjaza
Nice job posting a dictionary entry... Many things are beautiful. Flowers, sunsets, mountains, forests and all that are things I think can be beautiful at times. People can have beautiful personalities or traits or even physical features. If I ever referred to a girl as beautiful simply in terms of looks, then I think that's beyond merely "hot." However, I rarely use it in that context. To me calling a girl hot is the equivalent of saying "I'd hit it." I've never said either about a girl in my life as far as I know, as weird as that may be. James
I agree with Semjaza on the "hot" thing. I rarely use that word and mostly that's because it's really a word with sexual connotations. Not that it's wrong to use it or anything...I just rarely do. I was talking to my mother about beauty a few days ago, actually. And I'll give you an example. You know Persephone in The Matrix: Reloaded? I was talking to my mum about the movie and I mentioned her. I've seen her in other movies and I was explaining to my mother how beautiful I think she is. I don't say that at all in a sexual way, either. I remember telling my mother about her hair and her face and the way she moves and talks. I was trying to explain that she is the most graceful woman I have ever seen. And even when she was sitting down and saying nothing, she just had that intangible sense of elegance all around her. I can't really describe it with text, I don't think. And when I saw her in the movie, I wasn't thinking "Wow, I want to have sex with that woman!" I was thinking more along the lines of "Wow, she is like a beautiful piece of artwork". You know what I mean? It's like with life drawing. I've done a lot of this at school this year. And, I find that when you are drawing someone who is actually quite ugly...you begin to see the beauty in the person. For instance, we were drawing a very large woman the other day who wasn't very attractive facially or anything. But as I was drawing her, I remember thinking about her form and when I dissected her shape down into simple linework, I actually began seeing her as a very precious and beautiful thing. It's hard to describe, but those of you who have done life drawing will probably know what I'm talking about. Anyway, yeah...I see beauty around me all the time. Sometimes I'll pass a scene in the city and I will stop to admire the beauty -- whether it's just people walking to work or something really specific, it doesn't matter. I think there is always something beautiful that can be appreciated, if that makes sense.
ChibiV
To me, everything is beautiful and unique in their own ways. I think old people with wrinkles are beautiful. I also refer beauty as "natural", not necesary has to be people. The nature itself is very beautiful.
Epitome
Beautiful in my mind, sheesh I dont know. Mainly when I think of beutiful, I think of the mind and heart. If your heart says a girl/boy is beautiful, and so does your mind, she/he is beautiful. Also she/he has to have a great personality and that makes up beautiful to me. Kwai
I actually had a writing assignment for English. The topic was simply to describe something beautiful without using the word 'beauty' or any of its synonyms. The things written on varied from a rock performance, one single moment that cannot be forgotten, to the opposite sex. Beauty is just too vague to classify as a girl, or a scene, or whatever. Sui Generis
Mitch I know you, you are a great kid...In my eyes beautiful. Whats up? Anyways...Mitch break outta your shell and answer this question. Don't answer the text book answer, thats not what I'm looking for. Thats not what YOU are looking for. Answer with your heart, all of us have one! Thats what this topic is about. I personally believe once someone can truly identify what they believe as beautiful then the world around them becomes a little bit more.....well beautiful. I don't know. I think everyone needs to think of such things, thats why I made this thread. I wanted to see what people thought of beauty, and if people have ever really thought of it. I thank the people who have already tried, and hey keep posting. Mitch I'd be interested in seeing your answer.....if you ever answer...
Duo Maxwell
I use "Beautiful" a lot when I see a picture I like e.g Dali's Metamorphosis of Narcissus. Then there are two girls I absolutely admire, to me they are beautiful. But I don't really care for their looks, to me I think their souls are beautiful, you know? I admire their spirit and personality to me that is one of the most beautiful things about a person. Another thing I find beautiful are things that are different. Lady Macaiodh
One thing I love about myself is that I see beauty in things when others don't. But something can have certain aspects of beauty and still not be beautiful. Beautiful is more of a whole thing. I'll keep it simple. If something takes my breath away, if it almost causes me a physical ache, it is beautiful.
BabyGirl
I'll admit it, I use the word "beautiful" when refering merely to someone's appearance. But I don't see anything wrong in that, I think that such a word holds different meaning for everyone and everything. I think that Mexican children are beautiful, I think that the ocean is beautiful, I think that my boyfriend is beautiful, I think that Utah and Arizona's red rock valleys are beautiful. Overall I think that the human population is a beautiful, beautiful thing. Every time I see someone new on the street, a million different questions run through my mind about that person's life. If I didn't find the human race to be beautiful, then I wouldn't have an overwhelming urge to jump into everyone's lives for a few months and do a photo story on them. I guess I believe that everyone has a story to tell...and that is beautiful.
klinanime1
Hey, Mitch what dictionary did you use? I remember the time I did that to my bio teacher... *snickers, then slaps self* Anyway, what's beauty but just something to classify other people and put some down? Are we discussing visual beauty, because I find that it hardly nourishes the senses and soul, other than sight. Beauty is, to me, what you can see in the eyes of another. If they have a serene, tranquil look. *scratches head, confused at what the point was supposed to be* Well, I'd sooner read a "beautiful story" than see a "beautiful human." Anime is something else, though, because it's an attempt to capture both. Note "attempt."
Subversive
Originally posted by Justin I think beauty is subjective...or "in the eye of the beholder."
Nuh-uh. :D Wow! That pretty much sums everything up. To me beauty is something suttle and pleasing to the eye. Hot on the other hand is a description of someone you want to "do something" to. Beauty is something you can say about family members, flowers, art, etc.
