Anime Do you think those that watch Anime are more open-minded compared to those that don't

[COLOR=darkred]I think that just because you like anime doesn't mean your open-minded. I know a lot of people that are open-minded, and they don't even know what anime, and manga is. Sure, some peaople get ubsessed, and dress up as charcters and go to conventions, ( I just explained myself) but just by doing that doesn't mean they're open minded. Sure they're openminded to try new stuff, and do new stuff, but aren't a lot of people like that.

What I'm trying to say is, that not liking anime, does no put you in the close-minded class. People that are close-minded don't want to try anything else. A lot of people that are into anime, are like that. Because they get into it and they don't want to do anything else. That's being close-minded. You need to be open-minded to try new stuff, something besides anime. Because only liking anime, and only liking that is close minded.

Sure people get into anime and get addicted to it, but most of them that are open-minded do other stuff, and have other interests. Like they could be interested in music, instruments, sports (not really my thing) but anything you can do, that's being open-minded. I like anime and manga a lot, and I also like soccer, and music, and I like anime and manga. That's being open-minded.[/color]

What I meant in my earlier post was only that as otakus we have a slight tendancy to object to a life without any slight romance/angst/adventure/anything out of the normal. Maybe "mundane" was the wrong word.

I think anime fans may be more likely to have a different perception on various things, in the same way that the animation often presents a different view about things it represents in the animation. That's not to say anime fans and non-anime fans are completely different in points of view, it's just that anime takes a while to get into, so if anything it's more a matter of taste.

What is close-minded is seeing something like DBZ and then judging all anime to be like that. And the same with judging US animation by Samurai Jack. Things like Spawn are as adult as any more intense anime series, perhaps even moreso.

Most of the people I know around here don't want to get into anime just because, and that's being close-minded also, but I don't think it's as a direct consequence of not watching anime per se. As has been said already, open-mindedness depends on your personality as an individual rather than what you do or don't do.

I love anime and it has made me happier and more open minded about lots of stuff. I'm able to make friends better ( cuz it made me nicer..wow O.O ), it made me a clutz ( before i watched anime i NEVER triiped/stubbed my toe on ANYTHING ), and i have gotten my family into it ^_^ . My sister and dad especialy.. (My mom think the japanese are a bunch of perverts.. i rigged the stove for that one ^_- j/k . but i did wake her up that night at 3 AM and scared her with a scary..mask..thing ^_- ), But ,most of all it has made me crazier ^.^ WWWWIIICCCKKYYY WWWWWOOOOO!!! EHEHEHE!!! WWWWEEEEE! * tries to run down the stairs and trips on them and gets back up immediately * YYYAAAAYYY!!!! WWWOOOOSSSHHH!!!

Anime has definitely had a mind-expanding effect on me and most of my friends; sort of like some drugs, but without the drugs...But seriously, it has made me more knowledgeable about another culture(I guess). Also, it has made me lazier in a good way. Now, instead of arguing, I just say: "forget it," then I go and watch some anime, and reflect on that person's point of view. In addition, I now am less uptight(a LOT less), and am now able to realize the comedy in the things I do and that others do; and am embarrassed, surprised, etc... a lot less.

I suppose I have to go with the general consensus: Anime does not necessarily give you more of an open mind. In fact, in order to truly appreciate anime for the artform it is, you have to go INTO it with an open mind. Having a closed mind towards anime leads to grossly editing a perfectly good show (such as Sailor Moon, for example, my very first anime experience.) To accept issues that anime deals with wholeheartedly and to which Western culture attaches much stigma (homosexualism, animated violence and rape, ect.) you have to have an open mind to begin with.

And I can only speak for myself, but in no way has anime affected my love for animated Disney movies and other such Western "cartoons". In fact, without Disney to start me off, I never would have appreciated animation as much as I do. I don't see Japan as any better than anyone one else just because they created anime, and I feel only a form of sympathy for those who don't know anime. But then, my guy friends feel sorry for me because I don't know sports.

All a matter of opinion, I'd say.
