Anime Does anyone's parents (Other than mine) Disapprove of their child watching anime?

Well I'm old so my folks don't really care. But I'm concerned that they might misinterpret some of my manga for something other than just reading material, just because of some of the covers (and I'm talking about Love Hina here, because I don't even read anything more risque than that).

All I really know is my mom doesn't like the anime drawing style (the plastic faces, etc.). Other than that I don't get any reaction from my folks one way or another. My dad doesn't like cartoons in general (regardless of content), so it's no surprise that he doesn't like anime. The most crap I get is from my 17-year-old brother, who thinks that 99.9% of anime is total crap (and, well, by his standards, and based on what he's seen, he's right).

I spend on average $40 a week, that's about $150 a month and that = about $2,000
a year on [I]manga[/I] alone... not to mention all of the anime and other anime related stuff I spend my money on every chance I get... *sigh* I need a job... *cries* I won't have any money soon!!

They know I'm pratically obsessed and everything. But I've been doing so for 6 years or so. I get a feeling they want me to grow up though. But they enjoy watching Naruto with me too. Sometimes they get panicky when they see fanservice (like when I was watching Tenshi Ni Narumon) But they didn't say anything when they saw the Sexy no Ninjutsu in Naruto. (My Dad laughed)

Well, I've just had a completely new development of how much my mother doesn't want me to have anything to do with anime...SHE REBOOTED MY COMPUTER! I had, screenshots, music, movie clips, EVEN MY TRIGUN SERIES THAT TOOK ME 4 HOURS TO DOWNLOAD OFF THE NET!!! Not only that but she even sold all my anime stuff I had! Posters, movies, games (MY ENTIRE .HACK COLLECTION OF GAMES!), bedsheets, pillows, even my M:TG cards. And they're not even anime! I'm sorry, but they have gone TOO DAMN FAR!! I'm moving out, NOW!

I guess I'm pretty lucky, I still have my $500.00+ collection of anime and manga along with my sailor Venus plushy, Sailor Jupiter doll, Sailor Neptune doll (good condition, I'm willing to sell) and Sailor moon bank.

When I first got into anime and manga my mom didn't appreciate it too much. I was 16 at the time and had to go to Summer school for Chemistry (damn the periodic table!) I was pretty bad at school at the time so maybe she had a good reason to not let me watch SailorMoon and Gundam Wing (yeah I watched dubs at the time) on Cartoon network. Yes, I'm dating myself.

I joined my first anime messageboard in college where I discovered Fushigi Yugi. Revolutionary Girl Utena, and Slayers. I had also turned 18 that year and was pretty much on my own.

My ex-husband kept up my interest with anime and manga since he collects comic books and role plays. He didn't think I was childish or anything. My mom still doesn't understand, she tried to watch subbed Sailor Moon with me once and only watched one episode. She doesn't like InuYasha because of the fact it has demons. (go figure, my mom doesn't mind gay people ,but DEMONs freak her out...Catholics)

I guess that's the nice thing about being an adult. You can make your own decisions and your parents can dissaprove all they want but not take action.[/color]

I am pressing charges. Not only that, I'm going to get my last name erased. I'm changing my name COMPLETLY! I don't want to have anything to do with those *****! I'm sueing for the EXACT cost of all of those items which comes to a good 5,000 dollars, and that's NOT including my 900 card collection of M:TG. We're still trying to figure that out. My lawyer says we can double it because of emotional distress. I might as well too. I just hope the judge isn't a dumb **** like my parents!

my mom doesn't care what i watch. she knows i watch Inuyasha. she knows i have 2 inuyasha movies and a couple manga. she doesn't mind me reading them. but what really makes her tick is that i spend all my money on what she calls 'comic books'. but she said that it's my money and i can do whatever i want with it. and when my money runs out it runs out and i can't go begging her for more....but i feel lucky that she lets me do that. :rolleyes:

She doesn't mind that I watch anime, but she doesn't want me watching the inapporiate stuff. I mean, she went shopping for an anime DVD for me for Christmas last year, and the guy at the counter (who I wnat to kill!) told her Sailor Moon was porno. So she refused to get me the season one box set THIS year!!! (well, I don't think she would've anyways cause it costed so much). For crying out loud! Yeah there's that stuff in SM, but it's not GRAPHIC!!! Ya don't see the sex and stuff! UGH!!!
But I got her to get me the Utena Movie for Christmas this year. XD I kept on pausing it when I was watching it whenever she came into my room, cause the last I needed was her to see the bad stuff. There's so many scenes in there that she would consider 'bad'...
And yet she never suspected a thing. :eek: I was even talking about one of the 'bad' scenes in there once like a room away (with how loud we are you could've heard us outside) and she never paid attention so she never realized what it was I was tlaking about (which was Touga's 'flashback' scene for those who have seen the movie and want to know which scene I was tlaking about) Sometimes, I think my mom's a bit stupid... :P

I KNOW!! And one of the worse things is, that she one time tried to find some anime wallpaper or soemthign for me (to be nice. I didn't ask or anything. She's a very nice mommy ^^) but as you know you need to be pacific (am I spelling THAT right? O_O yargh...) when to comes to things like google. She stumbled upon some hentai and got the idea all anime was like that and when i went to her palce that weekend I had to convince her only some aniems are like that. ^^; (in case ya haven't foigured it out yet, my parents are divorced).
Oh boy, I don't wanna have to go through that again. I told her that in the future she'd have to ask me what animes I like for when she goes searching. Doesn't matter, she hasn't tried that ever again. :P

I'd first look forward to finishing High school and finding another place to live before I planned on going to a foreign country. We'll, I actually have a friend that came over in a forgein exchange program. She'll let me stay when I do get over there, which is, of coarse, after I finish high school. Anyways, she'll show my around Shijuku and the sights and help me learn Japanese. I plan to move out of her place when I'm 19 and get a nice place of my own.

It's not all good though...I may get the boat load of cash and monthly cash, but you also much remember that I don't have nearly ANY possesions, because almost everything I had was based around anime. The only things she didn't take where the PS2 itself, my bed, my TV and my ONE table...At least I can pack light ^^.

If I were you, I wouldn't even pack that stuff... It's probably gonna cost to much to ship all that stuff over to Japan and keep it in storage (bacause I don't think there's a lot of room over there) until you're 19. I know that you said you're getting a bunch of money and all, but if you're really serious about moving over there.. Save everything that you can while you're here and have what you're not using to move transferred into a savings account (or whatever you'd be using) over there. Believe me, it's really expensive over there... And don't forget that inflation in Japan is really high... I'm glad that you're planning to move and I hope that you have a wonderful time over there, I just want to make sure that you're prepared for reality...(Gawd, I'm sounding like my mother... :bawl: :worried: :help: :twitch: ) Anyway... I can't believe you actually think that with 7500 dollars you're going to be able to support yourself in Japan. You think you're going to learn Japanese pretty quick, enough to where you can get a job, and support yourself? Do you know how much the cost of living is over there?

I hate to burst all of your bubbles, but Japan is not paradise on Earth. It's not like in the anime movies where everything just goes your way and you can just move to the city and make a life for yourself. Its especially not enough if you don't have a high school diploma or a college degree.

I can't wait until you people hit at LEAST 16 and you realize how dumb you sounded when you said you wanted to move to Japan. It's one thing to want to visit, its another thing to want to live there, just because of your profound interest in anime. You think by going to Japan you can just lounge around all day and watch anime and read manga and not have a care in the world? Living all by yourself in a foreign country where the culture is completely different and they speak a very complicated language?
