Live Action EVA

Being the animation fan that I am, I always get nervous when I hear about animated properties being produced as a live-action movie. The first Flintstones movie was good, and so were Popeye. Tomb Rider and Mortal Kombat. It really just depends on what the live-action film producers plan to do with the property. With Scooby Doo and Daredevil they obviously just wanted to make some quick cash, but Spider-Man is a good example of something that has been adapted into live-action extremely well.

We shouldn't be worried if Peter Jackson is in running it, because he has a lot of experience with this sort of thing. In addition to the LOTR trilogy, he is currently working on a remake of King Kong. If anyone knows how to make an EVA film work, it's this guy.

And nobody said that they were planning on adapting the entire series into one film. My guess is that they will probably focus on the first six episodes of the series, and then explore the rest of it if there are sequels. The opening six episodes of Eva are very self-contained, and they would work very well in a movie. These episodes are all about Shinji getting used to the world of Tokyo 3, and adjusting to his life as an Eva pilot. technology is so advanced now that I wouldn't be surprised if the Eva battles are even more fantastic than they are in the series. Right now I am very curious about who might play these characters.

I would also note that Peter Jackson is a really hardcore LotR fan.

When he made that movie, he really wanted it to please the fans.

So at the very least, here's a guy who understands the sensitivities of hardcore fans. At least it's him as opposed to some cold studio executive. lol

*sigh* I don't mean to sound whiny, but it seems that this thread has just turned into a "It'll suck/No it won't!" thread...
Really, people. It's so early in development that it might never make it, and even if it does, there's really no point in arguing over something that we haven't even seen anything about yet.
Really, people. If it sucks, it sucks. If it rocks, it rocks. If we have different opinions, we do. If it's mediocre, it's mediocre. This is silly.

If it sucks, people will make fun of anime. If it rocks, Hollywood will probably make more live-action animes. If it's mediocre, people will make fun of anime or ignore it.

Those are my viewpoints. O__o; Well, yeah, it is too early to start saying anything really bad, isn't it? If the movie turns out to be really good, maybe people will get more interested in it. Eh...I'm a pessimist anyway... But I don't the idea of Hollywood messing around with anime.

DrForester posted this on GAF. I figured it was of interest. This is just concept art.

I am not familiar with Evangelion, but Shy has made it sound pretty great in the past.

If they pull this off it could be amazing... the only problem is that you can't really fit all of what has happened into 2 hours. I doubt everyone will be happy with it.

If Anno has a large say in what happens in the film, then I'm happy. If not, then I'm concerned.

Regardless of how good (or bad) it will be, it will never be the same as the original Evangelion series.

One problem I can already see from making the movie is that the religious aspects will most likely be cut out. That would take a huge chunk from the movie, but leaving it in would cause so much controversy. I hope they do leave in the religious aspects, but it seems unlikely.

I agree with everyone who complained on whether or not the actors are able to portray the pilots well. The problem lies in that you must find an excellent actor who looks the age of 14, not some 20+ year old acting as a teenager...I dislike those types of films. I don't see many good 14 year old actors around...using adults would destroy a good chunk of the storyline.

I'm not that concerned with the CG graphics, so long as they remember the 4 barons of hell theme, as well as the shoulder plates, which bind the Evangelion to lilums. The angels shouldn't be too much of a problem, unless they use cheesy graphics or screw up their names or their special properties.

NOTE: SPOLIERS (I don't know how to make tags :()

I also hope that the film will capture most of the aspects of Evangelion. The themes of the "familiar ceiling." The "I'm home. Welcome Home" that was used with Shinji in the beginning and Rei with Lilith. The way Shinji tiptoed when he first went to Rei's apartment, then the second time where he just walked in with Toji tiptoeing (I found that cute). The running away aspect, with how each character runs away in their own method (Gendo with closing off himself, Asuka with Eva and anger, Shinji with literally running away, Misato with beer and sex and destroying the angels, Kaji with beer and hitting on women and sex and finding the truth, and so on). The morality of Rei and the dummy plugs (how she was replacable, how she is the clone of Yui and how that affects her relationships with others). The relationships of all the characters with others, especially their parents (Shinji's father and mother, Asuka's mother and to a lesser extent her father, Misato's father, Ristuko's mother, and so on). The purpose of being alive, and what defines being alive (which extends to one's relationships). The meaning of the AT field. Incorporating the train scene and the water as the plane of Shinji's in the movie would be nice as well.

What would really get on my nerves most of all, is if the end of the movie (or sequels) avoided Third Impact. Many fans did not like it, but one must admit how it fits everything together. It isn't the sappy ending, where everyone lives happily ever after. It's reality, and the lilum will to survive.

Well, thats my input. Regardless, I like many Evangelion fans will see the movie, and hope for the best. Perhaps even if the movie turns out to be a pile of trash, that people will still research Evangelion on the internet and find the anime version. :)

God's in his heaven. All's right with the world.

From the art I hope we've established that it isn't Hollywood that's doing this. Here is it translated...at least that's what I'm told.

it starts off, " years after the destruction of Humans.......

the humans were able to build Tokyo 3 (oooooo again!!!!) and salvage in a barren world. The Evangelions were reconstructed, and put into storage for the new selected pilots.

and....

not to miss the Renewal of Evangelion

along with the copyrig

So basicly its this.

But it's just the remastered version of the series that's coming out soon.

Having the movie take place after the 3rd impact is a great way to start the movie. This makes the characters easier to fill since they don't have anybody to live up to in the Anime world. Also, they don't have to condense or screw up Eva because this is all new and takes place after the 3rd impact.

Nope, the folks from Gainax were very tight-lipped about the movie, dodging the questions or suggesting we talk to ADV. They did, however, bring and show some proofs for the big Gainax spread that's coming out in the July Newtype-USA. Apparently, a lot of information about the movie will be revealed in the articles and they didn't want to give anything away. The movie will be shot partially on location in New Zealand and will feature an international cast. The movie will not be a prequel or sequel, but a new retelling of the story in a feature format.

Ritsuko: Nicole Kidman.
Shinji: Halley Joel Os-something.

Uh, I gotta go and I forgot the rest. The rest aren't famous or anything, and I'm very dissapointed in the castings. The characters don't even resemble the real actors.

Haley Joel Osment and Nicole Kidman are both good actors. If they're able to grasp the gravity of EVA (and I'm sure they will be), you don't need to be so disappointed.

And...actors that resemble anime characters? lol

I think there's less to worry about than that. If the performances are good, I don't see the image thing as being a huge problem.

And the creator of Evangelion has obviously seen some of the ideas that are going into this movie. He seems enthused. I'm glad that the creator himself isn't jaded about it.

Well, here's my main beef with live-action anime movies:

WHAT ARE THEY GONNA DO WITH THE HAIR!?

Misato's is purple.. Shinji's is spiky.. Asuka's is.. Erm.. Individual... Do you think they're just gonna give them regular hair, or are they gonna digitally put in realistic hair?

Erg.. If WETA messes this up.. *angrily waves fist*

Nicole Kidman? Halley Joel Osmond?.. Heh.. They're good actors.. But it'll be funny seeing them in plug suits...

Halley Joel Osmond has got to go. Ok look at the kid. He would kill Shinji :( He is too too tooooo boring of an actor in my opinion. And he has the worst sad/depressed look i have ever seen on an actor. Anyone but him PLEASE!! HEAR ME ANIME GODS!
