really, how i see it , mankind is abusing any right they have to existence. we are polluting our planet and killing animals. the only reason we are doing so well is this-well 4 reasons... 1. we can store information outside our bodies2 we can walk upright3 we are prehensile- we can walk and manipulate stuff at same time.4 we have eyes without them we would be useless. if everyone went blind, humanity would be gone within a few weeks. less. our balance is so precarious it is not funny, and the way we are ruining our world is less funny. do you think mankind should be alive?? does it have a right to act the way it does? is this the right thing for the world?? if we cant get our act together then what????

Yes, we deserve to be here. We don't need the right to. We, as in life, deserve to be here because we evolved (or were put here by a god). Humans specifically do more "damage" than most other animals, but just because we do more doesn't mean we are the only animals doing damage. And that's only in our perception; truly all we are doing is surviving which is our primal instinct.

No, no one deserves anything they get...No one ever gets what they put in, because there are so many other factors that come into it. It's just a bunch of dumb luck that we're still here. If a metoer ploughs into our planet tomorrow, its nothing to do with deserving it, its just 'cause. I don't think anyone has a right to anything tahts overly significant (I may be a thief...) But yeah...I dont think we deserve to be here...well some of us might, but the majority of us are bastards.

You could get into trouble for saying that.

Anyway, considering I wanna join Greenpeace, you can probably tell that I think that the humans are split into groups:
1) The people who ruin the planet.
2) The people who want to do something about it.
3) The people who do something about it.
And different people deserve different things. Some deserve to be smoten on the spot, but there are people who care, and if some God came along and destroyed us all, it would be like punishing a whole class for what this one group of kids did.

I agree it's not that we deserve to be on this planet, it has just been the ol' rule of ~Survival of the Fittest~.
I'm really big into the Discovery Channel and they do tons of stuff on pre-historia; There were once huge birds, and when I say huge I mean HUGE called the Gastornis that stood over 6-8 feet tall and were land hunters. I guess it has alot to do with luck in the times that we all came to be.

If we weren't on this planet as humans, we'd be here as something else. And probably, that something else would be the dominate species.

If we weren't, there would be something that was....So it is inevitable that there will always be something to abuse god given rights.

Well, asking people if they deserve to exist is kind of a loaded question. lol

If you exist, you exist. There's nothing anybody can do about that, so it's not a question of whether you have the right to exist or not. I think all people have the right to exist, though.

But what you're asking is whether or not we deserve to live on this planet or something, I guess. I think some do and some don't. Companies that willingly pollute the environment (and people who litter, etc) obviously don't appreciate the world they live in. Thus, they're not doing anything to protect it.

But generally speaking, I'm not one to get into the whole "the world is coming to an end and we all deserve to die" frame of mind.

Basically, mankind is starting to address the environment in a very serious way. I think generally, we are starting to realize how much of an impact we're having. And it's becoming more important to be eco-friendly.

There are a few reports over recent months that suggest things are moving in the right direction. One of them confirmed that the hole in the ozone layer is now shrinking - a sign of increased efficiency on the part of industry and individuals. And in some cities, smog is starting to reduce year by year, a sign of increasingly fuel efficient cars.

So really, things are always improving thanks to awareness and technology. I think it's a bit overzealous to start saying that people don't deserve to be here and whatnot.

Mankind is ridiculous... I mean, the more we evolve, the more we destroy our own planet... Surviving you say? Do people need to kill and destroy to "survive"? I don't think so... That's what makes mankind so ridiculous... For example, why do animals kill? To eat and survive and protect theirselves... Why do men kill? Just for fun... Wow! What a difference uh? Now before you say that humans do what they do to "survive", take a better look at mankind and think better about it...

I agree with the groups thing... BUT, the first group is the dominant one, so there is nothing that can be done at all... Unless you are gonna tell everyone that's in the first group to change sides and go to one of the other groups... Yeah, that would be a lot of work wouldn't it?

That is what separates us is our skills of reasoning and adapting to an everchanging world.
This Earth has been torn apart in the past several times before humans of any form ever walked it. Volcano's errupted covering lands with ash and darkening the skies omitting sunlight from passing through for plants and animals, for years at a time. Not to mention the all meteor's that have slapped the earth bit.
We just need to look to the past to see that anything is possible, be prepared and adapt to what is coming. It's what we do as humans best. ^_^

Though I don't think you can compare mankind to volcanoes and such. I mean, our form of destruction is something that is really unnecessary - it's not part of Earth's natural processes.

But still, part of our development as a race/society is to improve our technology to a point where we no longer harm the environment. I think that will happen in the future.

As for the hunting thing...I wouldn't say that mankind kills animals only for fun. We are omnivorous beings, afterall. Our bodies are designed to eat both meat and vegetables. So, I think there is some legitimacy when it comes to farming and such. lol

Scientists had wondered why after all this time of noted human existence, why our DNA was all so alike in composition. In a different lab, other scientists were studying what's called the
Super Volcano.
Though in different ways, the Earth has always been punished and sometimes it lashes out. I agree though that through technology, research, exploration and data sharing we can get to a point where we are no longer harming the environment.
Just to shoot this out too, I read about how as we develop as a race and how the technically savvy get technically savvier, the gap between the growing population in as being know ledged (and hate to say it but civilized) grows. More people born, less people able to look for the answers; sounds weird - don't really know how to word that.
The point is, all we can ever do is look to how we personally can make a difference. I'm really interested in exploring more of Deep too; a lot of weird, cool things down there, organisms living in the oddest un-thought of conditions. Who knows what we could learn. ^_^

Wow... Humans and volcanos are definetly not even alike... I mean, does a volcano think? No a volcano is a "part of the environment"... Humans destroy knowing that they are destroying, and volcanos and meteors don't "think" that they are destroying at all, do they?
And human can live without eating animal meat, AND, do you eat animals hide? I mean, some people wear animal hide because "it's the fashion" right? That's not something I would call survival... What about those who hunt and put the animals' heads on the wall as their "trophies"? Yeah, that for survival also isn't it?
Humans and volcanos are definetly not even alike
But they are, they are both destructive forces.
Native Americans used meat and skins for survival and it was very important to them as a people to use the whole animal and not to waste. I believe what you are talking about; the violence of killing was brought on more by the degrading quality of society as a whole. Technology is both good and bad.
I can see what you are saying though, different opinions for everyone is what makes us who we are. ^_^.

Do people deserve to exist?
No. We are sinful by nature, thus in the eye of the creater imperfect. That was before Jesus sacrificed himself for us. We live for one reason only. God wants to see the good in us, and does.

The "Enviromental Problem" is that- a problem. We are doing what we can do. Could we have done it earlier, not likely. Problems can only be solved after they are problems. We didn't know of a problem until recent past, thus we have acted as quickly as possible.

Exactly. I personally do not believe we evolved from "monkeys". But monkeys can't think like us, they can't type like this, they can't even see these colors. So- yeah we're higher then them.

I think we deserve to be here. I just think the the animals and plants don't deserve the way we are treating them.

Considering that we probably will wipe ourselves out and the animals, it doesn't matter. But animals were here before us. We wrecked THEIR home, not ours. but I know one thing we are destroying, our lives..

Yes. But for a civilized humanbeing like my self that "simple" act of pulling a trigger would be harder then wind surfing in a huricane. I don't think I could pull the trigger, and I hope most of you could say the same.

Point is, its too easy to take a life nowadays. Even little kids play with a gun and accidentally shoot themselves or someone else. And to the original question, yes, we deserve to be here. Humans are capable of logic and reason, and though we kinda screwed up, I hope we will do better in the future. If they screw up again, well, then its Ragnarok and we all die.

I disagree. There is a wealth of information to completely contradict that perspective (at least as far as talking about animal life and the environment).

Just look at the developments in regard to hybrid/hydrogen vehicles, wind/solar power, biodegradable packaging, sustainable development programs, etc etc...

If we were caring less and less about life and nature, we would probably be polluting more today than ever before. But the opposite is true; today we're polluting far less than we did between the 1960's and 1980's. That's due to improvements in technology. And that is due to increased awareness of the environment.

As far as actual respect for human life goes...well, the "gun problem" isn't a worldwide issue I don't think. The availability of guns is something that is more a problem in certain specific nations. And people have really varying opinions on that issue, so I don't know what I could say about it...other than the fact that I'm happy that guns are not very widely available in Australia.

I tend to see that more in a selfish fashion; human beings are rather forced to be more environmentally aware because if they don't, they are going to screw themselves over. Its simply for their own good. Probably makes no logic, but I am not feeling logical at the moment.

Well, yes...that's true. It is for our own good.

But I think we've come to realize that what's in our interest is also in the planet's interest, so to speak. People generally don't want to live in a polluted world where technology is so sterile and impersonal.

So yes, these advancements are driven largely by what we feel is right for our own species. But by the same token, we've made a lot of efforts that are specifically designed to protect certain environments and other species. Most developed nations have strict laws about zoning and such, largely due to the protection of the environment (including certain species). If we were that selfish, we probably wouldn't care about protecting species other than our own. So, I think there is an element of truth in both perspectives.

Yes, but an extinction of a species may have unforeseen repercussions to the human race. It may result in crashing the ecosystem by chain reaction. I saw an interesting commercial in the tv once. It was a huge domino course set up with an animal or a plant drawn on each piece. One animal tipped over, and the all the dominos fell one by one until the last one with a human picture also fell. I think its like that.
