XeEmO
What does everyone think of dubbed movies? When it comes to most of them I think it takes a lot away from the movie. I also think that it depends on if it's animated or not. I'd much rather watch a dubbed anime then a dubbed kung fu film because with a dubbed kung fu film it doesn't even look natural. amibasuki
man, the dubbing for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was horrible. I don't think I've ever seen a kung-fu movie that was ever dubbed decently. nothin' wrong with watchin' subtitles.
SS5 Gogeta
I hate it when bad dubbing makes a masterpiece totally unbareable to watch. That's why people don't think that there's any depth to the very good Martial Arts films. Dubbers tend to make the people in the movie less inteligent and quite frankly, I don't think that they even care if the viewers get the emotions that were originally meant to be viewed. That's my opinion anyway.
Manic Webb
That's why I saw Crouching Tiger in subtitles. Actually, my cousin showed me a scene from both versions (dubbed and subbed) on DVD, and I chose to watch the entire movie subtitled. Most Jackie Chan movies are dubbed pretty decently. Jackie (being at least quad-lingual) dubs most of his movies in English himself. That's why Rumble In The Bronx confused the heck out of me when I first saw it... Jackie dubbed over his own voice. Sara
I think they're funny...At least, there is an element of humor there. Some of my friends had to do a movie for their Spanish class...they did the whole thing in English and "dubbed" it in Spanish afterwards. It was hilarious.
Semjaza
I think the appeal of a lot of dubs is that they are done so badly. Sure, it can ruin some movies... but it brings others into an almost cult classic status. I'd never watch a Godzilla movie if it had perfect dubbing, as I think the hilariously bad syncing is part of what makes it fun. The same with many kung fu movies. There are even groups that purposely do this now because they know people enjoy it. Of course, there are some that are completely ruined by bad dubs. Particularly anime. There was one I saw called Gryzor's Wing (I think), which wasn't that good as it was... but the dub literally destroyed any chance there was that I could possibly enjoy it. Transtic Nerve
For some reason America has to dub anything foreign into American english. I can't figure out why. My guess is cause we're too damned lazy to read while watching a movie. Or people here are just generally too stupid to read at that pace, regardless. In Japan, if an American movie is released, lets say Matrix Reloaded for example, they don't dub it in Japanese. They show it in theaters in English with Japanese subtitles. Almost always. Same in China in most cases. Dubbed movies suck. Always have crappy voice actors doing a crappy job on a movie that probably would be 100 times better in it's original language. But we'll never know that, because all we hear is the crappy acting job by the voice actor... Anime is easy to dub cause you can match lip movements 90% of the time because it's animated, by real movies... ugh it's horrid. I always think I'm watching something on my computer cause the sound is so off. All the Godzilla movies should be the one example of why people should never dub foreign movies... and then it should never be spoken of again...
