Senor Ding Dong
From the PlanetGamecube Mailbag: "However, just like Xbox Live is looking to obsolete the tunnelling concept, GameSpy has also become an official Nintendo developer. It was originally assumed that this was in order to get the networking information from Nintendo to make their tunnel work, but recent revelations have turned that on it's ear. It seems that GameSpy is creating all of the networking tools FOR Nintendo, and is going to use the GameSpy server infrastructure to create a similar service to Xbox Live, but without the cost to the end-user. Yes, that means something like Live for GameCube, but free. Don't believe me? We just posted a story about Iwata discussing an upcoming announcement about Online, and this is supposedly the way they're going about it. This means that your ability to get GameCube games online will be built-into the games, and won't rely on your computer to get the job done ... just like it should be." Source: Planet Gamecube Mailbag Note:Tunneling is playing LAN (connecting 2 GC's together), but accoss the internet.
SS5 Gogeta
I heard rumours about Gamecube going online but I didn't think that it was going to be like this. Wow, I hope this tunneling thing could enable even 56K modem users to play without too much lag.
Semjaza
Considering this is something that has been making the rounds for about two weeks, you think they would have posted the rumor by now lol. I was telling Desbreko and Charles about this a while back. This isn't tunneling, it's referred to as something else. However, if it goes according to what a Gamespy rep said at E3 (which is where this rumor stemmed), basically if you pick LAN it will find people online to play with. Up to 8, in the case of Mario Kart: Double Dash. Of course, it absolutely required a broadband adapter and the right sort of internet connection. Gamespy announced they were making middleware way, way, way back for GC. Before Live was even really going. However, no one really thought much of it because it kind of just sat there unused. It basically worked just like Gamespy Arcade does currently, but in a simple form... Which is basically just how Live works. According to the press release there would be lobbies and instant messages and buddy lists and everything else so you could organize your games. Whether or not Nintendo will be working any of that in (assuming this is even true), I have no idea. Either way, Iwata has said that Nintendo will be making an announcement on their online plans in the immediate future. He said this during Nintendo's press conference at E3... So they have to be doing something. Really, this would be a dream come true. Online play that would be easily integrated and totally free outside of the cost of the adapter. You can't really beat that. I just hope more games make use of the LAN feature. I really wish F-Zero GX was most of all lol.
James
I find that there is a lot of misconception about Nintendo going online. People come away with the impression that Nintendo simply doesn't want to make online games and such. But it seems to me that Nintendo is making some very significant efforts to find a suitable way of going online (one that results in zero fees for the consumer). Satoru Iwata said that online gaming should be free - that you should only have to pay for the game and nothing else. That's the only option Nintendo sees for online gaming and thus, they have to find a way to make it profitable for themselves. But anyway, I can't say much more other than what Tony's already said. He summed it up pretty well I'd say. ^_^
Subversive
*Gets Amped* (not for the Vamp...sorry TVE) Yay! I always knew Nintendo would do something incredible like this...the first step seems like it should occur soon!
