1. 1. So, have you ever noticed the similarities before this?

    • Yeah, those are some of the most similar characters in anime

Has anyone here who's watched both series noticed the HUGE similarities between Wolfwood in Trigun and Spike in Cowboy Bebop?

Among other similarities I can think of:

Spoiler similarities:
Both characters have a tragic past.
Both die, and they die when confronting their past.
Both are somewhat (no, incredibly) flirtatious but in or near the end settle with one female character.
Non-spoiler similarities:
Both are dressed very similarly: right down to the same hair color and suit color.
Both are like antiheroes so to speak: their philosophy is that the end justifies the means, which brings them into conflict with other characters.
Both are really good shots with a weapon, but can fight hand-to-hand on occasion.
Both are smokers and have been chided for it a few times in their respective series. (Wolfwood by Milly in episodes 11 IIRC and 23, Spike by Jet in episode 3, maybe more -as far as I've watched lol)
Both have a way of getting dragged into major problems despite being apathetic and uncaring.

So what do you think? I'm not saying one series's writers intentionally copied the other's character, but that these characters are incredibly similar. . .and that's a really interesting thing about both series. :)

-^.^- (I'm sorry if a thread like this has been done before: I don't see one anywhere else close to the front page.)

(by the way, the attachment isn't my own work. It's from Bishonen.net's Trigun page, but I thought it was really cute. o.o )

There's a lot of this in anime, I've noticed it too ^_^

You've got your generic, "Character hiding a dark past" "sickening happy character" "dumb but resourceful character" etc etc...

These pop up all over the place ^_^ This thread will probably have people quoting a few names to you - I would but I can't think of any off the top of my head

Except Jim (Outlaw Star) and Souichi (Ex-Driver) -- Both nerds of their prefered area but forces to be reckoned with ^__^;; (And they're both 12 to boot O_o)

I think a lot of characters in anime are just "templates" of stereotypical characters ^_^

Well, in almost every aspect, you can find an anime character that is similar to another because everything is overdone, I think.

Just take Tenchi, Ranma, and Keitaro. (Tenchi, Ranma 1/2, Love Hina) All three live with 5+ beautiful women with many of them in love with him. He doesn't love any of them back except maybe one towards the end or something. It's insane! I think the harem concept is so overdone.

Wow! I'm not the only one who thinks that!
(For the record, I think you forgot about the fact that all three of those series are horribly long, and I beleive two out of three have a plethora of OVAs too...)

SORRY! :bawl: 1000,0000,0000, million apologies for that spoiler! I thought everyone else here had watched Cowboy Bebop and I was the only one watching it for the first time! (I saw the final episode spoilers in the episode guide.)

I'm going to edit that post with spoiler text on that so no other newbies to either Trigun or Cowboy Bebop get a spoiler they don't want.

Never noticed the similarity before...but now that I actually think about it, yes, they are quite a bit alike.

I could say the same for Kaola Su(Love Hina) and Ed(Cowboy Bebop).^^() They are both incredibly insane, absolutely adorable, and some other descriptive words that both begin with the same letter.>>

Character similarities are common in anime, whether they look alike or act alike.^^()

I Talked about it in another thread that asked about what would make a good anime. Most poeple didn't get the in depth similaraties(sp?) that I saw. Where Vash at the end listen to his own self and looks at himselfs for advice while in cowbot bebop it reverse where Spike at the end learns to listens to others advice.

Hey now, I wasn't saying I didn't like those series! Ranma 1/2 is my ORIGINAL favorite anime series. Love Hina is an awesome manga series (they TV series is sort of iffy) and I love Tenchi, too. I was just saying the had lots of things in common. ^_^

*nods* As I probably implied, I'm not really into the harem sort of story. Pure love/humor anime kinda isn't my thing.
But, to be fair, the bounty hunter theme is beginning to become overdone. I haven't seen a lot of anime, but I can tell you that Outlaw Star, at first, seemed a lot like Cowboy Bebop, and Gene Starwind still reminds me of Spike.
