Here is a fun little digital peice that I made for my Photoshop class last semester. I took the photo of my boyfriend's roommate's dog, Foster [my sweetie], and then turned it into this fun...photo thing ^_^

A lot of saturation was lost during the conversion from .psd to .jpg :(

I figured that most of you around here are only into the creative type graphic design. It's a shame that they both can't get good appreciation in this forum =\. Ah well, thanks for the comments :)

Well I think that you sis a very good job on this. I like how the dog's ear goes over the Dog Fancy text, it looks really professional. My only complaint is that the green background makes most of the text is difficult to read. I would try some other color, a simple white would probably work.

Did you take the picture yourself?

Edit: I forgot to mention that I don't like your avatar. That picture of Faye frightens me.

Wow. Something that doesn't have filters all over it and doesn't have things stuffed into it to the point that it's cluttered, just so it doesn't look "plain". How different from the norm here.

Anyway, I've had classes like this... Specifically Layout heh. I see no real problems with any of it. The font choices work for the magazine I'd say.

The only real problem I have is with the bottom half, where you have that green text with the black borders. It's somewhat hard to read, even over the dog. The "Special Training Issue" part seems out of place as well. Like you didn't know what else to do with it almost lol.

The photo is nice too. I like the overlapping ear part. The dog looks like he's rather indifferent though heh.

*doesn't know what saturation is anyway*
¬.¬

Actually, it looks really nice and real too, lol. Like everyone seems to have mentioned, no-one's posted anything of this sort here yet. And it really is nice to see something that hasn't been beaten over the head repeatedly o.o

I like the ear part of it, because it looks real professional. And I liked the way you stuck to like this black and green colour theme thing. But maybe the writing under the 'Plus:' could be seen easier and clearer if it was outlined with a thin white instead?

*shrug*

I dunno. Is nice though :)

That's really neat, Jenna! ^_^
I especially like the dog in that picture. It's really cute. ^^

Though, the text along the bottom is a itty bit hard to read. It's probably just be the brightness of this computer, though.

Hah, though her character is a bit frightening anyway, neh? I think it fits her so well ;D And yes, I took that picture meself.

Ahh, I definitely appreciate all the comments. I don't venture in here often but I know that most of what is posted are anime banners and strange creative cool looking design warp hole designs, so I thought I'd do something out of the norm and see what the reaction was. It's comforting to know that people welcome the change of pace ^-^

Anyway, I agree with all of you that mentioned the text problem in the bottom right corner. This was originally a very large image because it had to be printed as an 8x10 glossy print. The text is easier to read on the printout, but I've never really been to happy with how it looks or what it says. I've never read Dog Fancy or looked at it, so I kind of just made things up...I was unsure of what to add to the cover ^_^;;

I type too much.

Thanks again, everyone :)

I think that all too often, people forget how powerful simplicity can be. Typography in particular can paint something in such a vivid way, without requiring complex lighting effects and heavy beveling.

In addition, most graphic designers aren't designing funky sci-fi movie posters or something. Most of them are designing packaging for toilet issue, point-of-sale promotional pieces for home appliances or magazine covers. See what I mean? The key is to be creative with what you've got -- to make a powerful statement within the confines of the brief.

It seems to me that you've done pretty well, given your brief. Magazine design and layout isn't easy. In fact, for me personally, it's one of the most frustrating things. It takes me a lot of time to make very efficient use of space and such.

But yeah, I like this cover. It looks realistic. And it looks seamless, which is what good graphic design (in this context) needs. I mean, it's a magazine about dogs. It shouldn't necessarily be wowing the reader with flashy, nonsensical imagery. It needs to fill its purpose, you know?

The only thing I dislike about it is the way you've got the Australian Heelers heading and sub-text on the right. "Australian Heelers" is centered, with left-aligned sub-text underneath. To me, it seems a bit jarring. Not to mention the fact that centering is generally a no-no with publishing -- at the very least, it's something that is difficult to do effectively. In this case, my personal recommendation would be to align all of that text to the right. That way, I think it'll sit more flush with the edge of the page.

Other than that, I don't think you've done anything wrong here. I like the overlapping ear, I like the distance blurring and I think the colour works for the context, even though I personally find it to be unappealing (the colour, that is). But anyway, good stuff. ^_^

James, thanks a lot for your advice. Those are things I certainly didn't know but now that I do, I'm sure they'll come in handy. We didn't get any sort of lecture on layout before this assignment, we were just told to do it, heh.

When you said 'distance blurring', did you mean how most of the dog is out of focus? That's how the picture was originally, I photographed him at 80mm with the macro setting on, which allows for the lens to focus on one small detail of something. That's why most of him isn't in focus...just in case my photo jargon was of interest to anyone ^_^.
