I really think editing [i]in general[/i] (I am NOT referring to editing for kids since I personally don't agree that kids should be getting into anime as young as some are, they're not ready for it) should be minimal and only to remove things that are necessary for televised broadcasting.

I didn't mind, say, the TV edit of Trigun because what was removed [spoiler](about 10-15 uses of a certain profanity from the series total, one close-in camera angle on Vash in episode 18, and one blood pool IIRC) really didn't take away from it THAT much. I mean, the words that [i]were[/i] allowed more than sufficed, I'm not into fanservice and Vash wasn't even my favorite bishounen of Trigun, and it was obvious that the character was dead without the blood pool being shown in that scene.[/spoiler]

Now, for example, if they had removed the scene where [spoiler]Legato was shot[/spoiler] or if they had taken Wolfwood out of the story in order to not offend people, I would be really angry because those were things that *can't* be edited in any way while keeping the artistic integrity of the story.

One thing I want to say is that if you want to see something totally unedited, buy the DVD. Otherwise, don't complain about edits, especially if something's directed to kids.

Exactly the point. As long as things that are taken away do not detract from the overall theme and story of whatever they're being taken away from (be they anime, video game, etc.) then that's okay with me. But if I had to miss out on the coolness of Wolfwood because some suit had a hissy fit and didn't want to deal with complaints, then I would have been majorly PO'ed.

I'd love to continue the discussion, but I'm kicked off the computer by a bunch of whiners who want to get on...plus I'm numb from the waist down. Sitting in a crappy chair has so many disadvantages...

[color=#335062]I am surprised that people can complain about the cursing in FFVII. It was pretty tame, to put it mildly. I think they said the "s word" maybe twice in the entire game. [i]Most[/i] of the swearing (if you can call it that) was like "damn" and such.

I feel that if you are offended easily, there's a possiblity that more and more types of entertainment are going to be ruined for you. But really, it's just words. And they're not being said to you (or even necessarily said in a degrading context). So I feel that for the most part, I can look past foul language and enjoy what's underneath. Of course, if the language is absolutely unnecessary (Alien 3 might get close to that...if you've seen it uncensored, you'll know what I mean), then [i]maybe[/i] I get a bit peeved.

I suppose it mostly comes down to your own tolerance levels, in terms of what level of language you're willing to accept before you decide that something is unwatchable. Although I do think it's a shame that poor language takes precedence sometimes...especially in a story that can be better expressed in other ways.[/color]

The only 'bad' words were damn and sh** (as Charles stated), and the rest were blocked out by symbols. Anyway, it suited the chracter personality, didn't it? O_o Oh, right, he said *** also. ^_^

I wasn't really offended by the cursing, it's just that I felt that they threw it around so much that it seemed a little silly to me. They were just using it as a filler in conversation, if you know what I mean. It would take a lot more cursing than that to offend me. I hear way more than that at school every day.

I mean, Barrett did swear quite a bit. But really, he mostly said "damn" and stuff of that caliber. It was never really [i]swearing[/i] as such (though he did say the s-word a few times, but I felt it was used sparingly). Of course, it fitted in with what Barrett was all about. It was part of his personality. If anything, I think that he was kind of soft/tame when you consider what they were trying to do with his personality. They could have gone a lot further. O_O

Having said that, there are some animes that seem to have an obsession with swearing. Some of them show absolutely no restraint at all. o_O[/color]

I guess. Maybe I've just played the game so much I'm starting to imagine things and inventing my own conversations. I have beaten it like 7 times. Obession? I think not...though I still haven't found everything in the game...

Hey, maybe I had a different edition of FFVII than all of you do, but I distinctly remember the "d" word being prefixed at least 13 times by another word that began with a "g." I really hate *that* particular swearword, so that's what annoyed me the most, as well as the fact that the swearing was often used as "filler."

I mean, the scene where Barret went nuts after the destruction of Midgar would have been much more touching and much deeper if they had shown a CG of him silently crying with a background of that haunting music. . .instead, the scene where window after window of curses comes up culminating in two uses of that word I hate just made me lose respect for the writers totally.

Well, cursing is thrown around alot more in FF7 than in FF8 and FF9. As far as I know, neither FF8 or FF9 were censored. From what I heard, Sony added cursing to FF7 to try and make themselves look more adult (though, IMO that made things that should appeal to adults seem more childish. Stupid stereotypes.). I don't consider the "d" word with God's name behind it to be a minor curse. Alone it's minor, but even that word alone I find offensive when it is thrown around alot for no reason. I'm pretty sure both "b" words were there too.

I'm not anti FF7 and I do like the game, but I have other issues with it besides the cursing (less balanced than FF6, shorter quest than FF4, FF5, or FF6, prerendered backgrounds used for dungeons, thus making them smaller than dungeons in other FF games, and no alternate world like in previous games). FF7 may have gotten the most publicity, but IMO FF6, FF4, and even FF5 are superior.
