Screen lurking, looking, watching call it what you want to, but how do you feel..

This is a general FPS question, do you screen lurk/watch/look. You know in an FPS(offline and against human controlled characters) you have all the screens in your view. It can be easy just to take a glance at them to see where they are and what they are doing. You may also be accused of being a screen lurker when you are dominant over your opponents. This is very true when I play Halo or really any other FPS game with my friends. They are not very, I guess you could say, skilled/accustomedin the FPS genre, but they do seem to enjoy playing FPS multiplayer. So in my case I usually come up in victory, (a big victory I should say) and they like to say that I am a screen lurker after every kill that I get. ( O and I do not screen lurk.......well at least as much as they say I do)

So do you screen lurk and how do you feel about people who do it.

I understand exactly how you feel. I was waiting for someone to create a thread about this, although I could've done so myself, heh.

In reality when I play a multiplayer game with a person, I always tend to screen lurk accidentally, and i mean that. I often find it causes great confusion for a couple of seconds. But then again, I cannot be bothered to get a link cable and link to other screens together, this is why I prefer PC games for internet play.

Other than that, I can't help but screen lurk if I am not focused on an event in the game, but what're you going to do. It often becomes annoying when yiou realise that you're opponent is accusing you but then being a hypocrite.

My cousin does that all the time, especially in Goldeneye. He knew most of the levels to the point where I tested him with this little game. I ran and stood in a certain area. Then he looked at my screen to see where I was, closed his eyes(I made sure he couldnt see)and navigated through the level to where I was and killed me. It proved I dont stand that good of a chance because in every fps, he glances at my screen and tracks me down.

If you're good enough, screen lurking doesn't even become an issue. At least in games I've played. It doesn't matter if someone knows or can see where I am or are coming from based on my screen... They could just use the radar anyway, same function really.

The only time it can really be an issue is if you're trying to hide. If you're quick enough, you can still get the jump on them though. I guess it's just a mix of watching yourself and everyone else heh.

It's really a double-edged sword. If one person can do it, then so can the other; everything comes down to raw skill. The one who is less skilled in all the aspects of the game, such as geography, will be eliminated. I support screen looking by all involved parties; however, the only thing that I hate is camping, just staying in one well-fortified spot. But screen-looking is okay by me, because it's not cheating, it's using knowledge of game geography in a win/lose situation.

My brother's friend actually has a rule against this when we play Halo. Simply enough, no looking at the other persons screen. The reason someone would do that in the first place is because the radar is pretty crap, and you can only see someone on it if they are something like 20 yeards in your perimeter. In the past, I've sort of done it subconciously without thinking about it, since all I was concentrating on at the time was to get to the point of battle and fight it out there. Otherwise, I really didn't see how much fun it was to simply search around for your opponents the entire game, with not a lot of shooting at all.

But yes, I do see where it could pose a problem. It would make it all too easy in an open feild to snipe someone or something, which my brother and his friend no all too well. When I play Halo, I usually make en effort not to look at their screen, but otherwise, I don't even think about it. If it happens, it happens.

the only time I may intentionaly look at my opponents screen is when...
A.) I'm losing horribly and it won't make much of a diffrence.
B.) they revive so I don't have to spend as much time looking for them.
C.) I'm playing sniper or providing cover-fire for my allies.

yeh most people jus screen lurk sub conciously and i don't mind that, hell ive caught myself doing it but i really hate it mean they do it on purpose and they do it a lot. yeh i usually like taking up the sniper position in multiplayer fps but it completely takes the fun out of it when they know that your gazinng down on them from your perch. ggrrr to all u intentional screen lurkers!!!!
