Cell Phones and Public Places

OK, I'm going to open up for a moment, and there will be lots of swearing....thank god for Obscenity Filters.....

I'm currently sitting in the library, because my dad is looking for a job on the home one. I'm just sitting back, reading some threads, enjoying the peaceful quietness, when a ****ing cell phone goes off right behind me.

Why do people find it necessary to carry Cell Phones in places they KNOW should stay quiet? They ruin your day....seriously.

I was in the movies a couple of months ago, watching a good movie. In the quietest part of it, a cell phone goes off. Someone up above me shouts 'SHUT THE **** UP!'

If I'm in a movie theatre, and had the choice between a nutcase with a thermonuclear weapon and a cell phone, guess which I'd take?

The thermonuclear weapon.

Why?

Because nobodys thermonuclear weapon has gone off beside me during a movie

I work in JCPenney. At least 3 times a week, we'll be standing there with no customers around chatting randomly, and some person will walk down the aisle and be talking to themselves. We stare for a moment to discover that they have an earpiece in and are talking on a cell phone.

Now, I work in the shoe department. It's a place where you have to have communication between the customer and yourself, to see if the shoes you brought out to them are working well, or they need something different. As of late, I can't get anything done right because they're on those stupid cell phones. They're busy talking away, and I'm trying to figure out if they need me or not. Then they get mad when I try and help someone else. I just want to say to them "I don't read minds People!"

So remember this when you're someplace and having a chat on a cell phone: the whole world can hear you, and probably doesn't want to. Unless its over something of importance, wait til you get someplace more private! :)

i don't think i've had any dark incidents about mobile phones.
definately no incidents in the cinema because you're not allowed to have your phone switched on.
although i don't like it when my mother phones me on my mobile just to check how many potatoes we have in the house! :(

I really don't have too many incidents with a cell phone. My dad keeps his on vibrate when he's carrying it around, which I think all people should do because something shaking violently in your pocket will not grab the attention of another person. I think that a cell phone is nothing but a convinence item. I personally don't have one. The only reason why dad has one is because his job calls for it, and he doesn't use it for anything else.

I think it's funny when a cell phone goes off in an elevater and everyone reaches for theirs at the same time.

I don't really mind it because the company I work for picks up the bill (I use my cell phone as an all purpose phone, it saves me from paying an extra bill)...however I do have some pet peeves when it comes to cell phones

1. Turn it off during a meal!
2. Turn it off at the movies!
3. Don't change CD's, drive, and talk on the phone at the same time!
4. If you get drunk at a bar and loose your cell phone tough!, you shouldn't have brought the phone into the bar in the first place!

[color=hotpink][size=1]I'm actually glad for cell phones. Whenever Ryan's not home, I can call him and talk to him no matter where he's at. Now, he'll get off the phone when he goes to eat or when he goes inside his school library and stuff, but I like to talk to him no matter where he's at. And he wont hesitate to tell me to hold on, either.

I can't believe people leave their cell phones on during a movie because they specifically say for you to turn them off.[/color][/size]

[color=002E55]I can type text messages faster than the phone can interpret them on screen. Yes, that is an indication of how excessively I use my cell (mobile damnit!) phone; but I do adhere to the unwritten rules of turning them off during movies and such.

People are very obsessed with them over here. 46 out of 60 million people own a cell (mobile again damnit!) phone. I've heard a number of them go off during exams over the past few days, lol.[/color]

I don't like cell phone much. Although I do appreciate their usefulness, I definitely won't buy one. I'm an operator at work and I get all kinds of people ranging from nice, those who don't speak English to those who try to give me hell. After having a headset attached to my head 7 hours a day, that?s enough phone use for me. You need to contact me, I'm either at home, work or online. Can't find me then that means I don't wanna be bothered or roaming the streets.

This one incident was stupid for lack of a better word.

I'm in science class and we're watching a movie. It was that day that the principal was s'posed to be making her 'rounds', so when she comes in, we're supposed to look like we're doing something constructive.
Principal comes in. Sees people lounging on the floor, playing video games etc. Glares at teacher, who is trying to bring order....and then the teachers own cell phone goes off with a random call from her daughter's boyfriend.
You can prolly guess what's next. This particular teacher was a former cheerleader who is [B]very[/B] laid back and is ever up to her nose in paper work.

I didn't have a cell/mobile for a long time. Didn't need one. I never went anywhere. But then when I planned to take a roadtrip with my step-mom's family, my biological-mom bought me a cell phone the day before I left "to stay in constant communication." I've had my phone ever since.

I usually turn my phone off when I'm in class and at the movies. I only turn the sound off (leaving it on vibrate) when I'm reading at the book store or when I'm in a place that's generally quiet. Other than that, I leave the sound on full-blast!

I've never interrupted anybody or brought attention to myself. It's not like anybody calls me but my mom... and rarely, at that.

I loathe cell phones. I actually have one now, but I use it strictly for emergencies or being locked out of my house or whatever else.

In my opinion, most people shouldn't even be allowed to use them. I liked it better several years back when only people with [i]jobs[/i] used the damn things. Now I can't walk 15 feet without running into someone else that thinks their discussion on what's for dinner is so important that everyone else in the general vicinity must hear about it.

Honestly, how many of these people have important conversations? Hell, how many are even remotely of value? The problem is that many people have so many minutes that they don't give a crap what they're on there for (and in many cases, the minutes don't roll over - you use them or you don't, giving people even more reason to just use them up).

I cannot think of really any useful conversations I've overheard. Sure, they exist... but they sure seem to be in the minority.

However, what it all comes down to is some sort of ettiquete. Something NO ONE seems to have. They should force people to take a class on it so I don't have to put up with these people. If they fail, no cell phone for you.

For example, I'm shopping at Target. Some lady calls her kid and has a 10 minute conversation with him about what toy he wants. The kid can't even come to get a toy with his mom? And seriously, this isn't a rare occurance. It's like people want to use phones to replace any sort of physical activity that they can avoid. Cell phones add to this excuse even more.

I can be with someone, they get a call. Instead of being like "I'm out, I'll call you later," (which most do [i]eventually[/i] you wind up sitting there having to listen to them talk about nothing for at least 5 minutes. These people aren't even HERE and they are the center of attention already.

Plus we have all the idiots with the loudest, most obnoxious ringtones there are. The people with lights all over their phones and attenaes so you cannot ignore the fact that they even have one. They [i]need[/i] to let everyone know, it's some sort of insecurity it seems like.

Then the people in theaters. My friend was at the screening for The Matrix: Reloaded and he told me about a lady who got a call in the middle of the film. She answered it and sceams out "Hey! I'm watching the Matrix!" and keeps going on and on. They finally just kicked her out, and everyone cheered. I've had this happen to me before as well... and you can't exactly ignore bright blinking lights in a big dark room.

The most annoying factor is that kids half my age have the damn things... and so do all of their friends. Parents pay for them for whatever reason, and now they have a phone to call and waste time with.

Does anyone remember this really stupid anti-drug commercial? Some kid, I'd say she was 12 or 13, was caught with weed, so she had to stay home while her friends were at the movie. First of all, the girl had [i]her own[/i] phone line in her room (seemed like no one had that luxury when I was like 12 lol). Anyway, she calls her friends at the movie theater and they blow her off because drugs are not cool, I guess. The kid has a cell phone in the movie theater. He's 12. The damn thing is on and he's talking in it. How many of those little films about not using your phone in the theater do they have to play?

Owning one is even worse, depending on who calls you. If you don't answer, some people fill your voicemail with messages asking about why you aren't. Some people expect you to suddenly have 30 minutes to talk to them just because they called. Oh, they say, you have tons of minutes, there's no rush. Whatever, ***wipe. You pay my damn bill.

I have my cell phone with me wherever I go. However I put it on vibrate when I'm in quiet places (ie: Class or whenever it's nessisary) I don't talk on it alot usually. It's there simply for the reason I might need it. I'm glad I've had it on a few occations. Cell phones aren't always the annoying things everyone makes them to be, some people abuse them. But hey, America isn't as bad as some countries. I vbelieve in Switzerland, NO ONE has a home phone and 99% of the people there have mobile phones. Imagine what thats like if you think it's bad here.

Oh man I really hate cell phones. My family has 2 of them that we share. When I go somewhere with my friends I take it with me just so I can call my parents and let them know when i'm comming home. But there are plenty of kids at my school that bring them from class to class. There not even allowed in my school but rarly does a day go by where I don't hear someone's cell phone start ringing. As for having one ring while I was watching a movie, luckly that hasn't happened to me. Then again I don't go to very many movies. The last one I went to was "The Matrix Reloaded" (which was fairly recent) and the one before that was Bowling for Columbine (quite some time ago).

Cell Phones! I hate those friggin' things, especially the ones with those stupid musical ringers.

Everywhere I go, be it at the mall, on the road, in the grocery store, theater, or even school, there is always someone talking on their stupid cell phone.

But what really rattles my cage is that the people who talk on cell phones have nothing constructive to say. They're always just jabbering on, explaining what they are doing at that time.:flaming:

After seeing this I have come to the conclusion that people who like to yak on cell phones are basically doing it because it gives them a feel of self importance. "Look I'm talking on a cell phone, Yippeeee!"
Either that or they are so bored with being by themselves, that they must be talking to someone at all times.

Plus I find that text messaging and the ability to play games on cell phones, useless.

Oh I also really hate those stupid cell phone comercials!:mad:

It just seems that people rely way too much on cell phones. Its like they become addicted and can't do a damn thing without them, not even talk to people face to face.
To me, this growing trend of people becoming addicted and controled by machines is very sad.

But this is all just my opinion:D

Mobile phones don't bother me that much, I mean people carry them around for a reason. When I had mine it was constantly on vibrate when I was in somewhere where it is expected to be quiet. The biggest annoyance I had was the library. You'd have mobile phones ringing like crazy, it was quite annoyin ecspecially when you had to study for exams and stuff.

It seems that from this series of posts that cell phones are a necessary evil. You can't live with them or without them, so it seems.

Yes, I do have a cell phone. But I, unlike a lot of the people I see, don't use it in the most completely useless way. I got my cell phone for emergency situations (like if I run out of gas, crash, get stranded somewhere, etc.) as well as for some menial conversation. I got it mainly for the emergency factor as well as getting it for college. I can now talk to my parents if they want to call me or talk to friends if they need be without using the phone in the dorm room.

As for public places, I'm not popular enough to have it go off in any situation where it might be undesirable (ie, Movies, Mall, anything where people hate you for it), but I keep it on vibrate anyways just to be sure.

Overall, they can be useful and are great for work if you use them there, but I admit that it does get annoying to see a 14 year old girl chatting it up with her friends in the middle of a great movie like The Matrix: Reloaded (I saw it yesterday and that's just what happened!). But we're gonna have to face it; this society is becoming more and more mobile and there's nothing we can do to stop it. Might as well all get a cell phone while you can. ;)

Are you sure about that last part? The way I remember it, he glanced at his cell phone silently, saw the girl's name or number, and decided not to answer. Whether or not he would've walked out of the movie or stayed in his seat had he decided to answer, is unknown.

If I don't answer my phone, she likes to leave me about 3 messages (over the course of only one hour) asking why I'm not answering my phone, then she leaves about 5 entries on my "missed calls" list. Gah! Calling me 50 times in a row when my phone is off [i]isn't[/i] going to make me answer any faster.


On another note, I think that if people didn't have long meaningless conversations on their mobiles, they'd still be having long meaningless conversations on pay phones or on their neighbour's home phone. And other people actually need [i]those[/i] phones. I know plenty of people who would have tied up my home phone with long distance calls if it weren't for their cell phones. Getting rid of mobiles won't stop meaningless conversations, it'll just redirect talkers toward other phones to have them.
I hate people who talk during a movie as much as the next person, but does it really bother you all that much if a person is in a public place where people are talking loudly, anyway?

Every night, I usually have about nine-fifteen voicemail messages. Usually, I have about three from my mom, two from my dad, and about four-six others from people from school. They call back every five minutes to ask me about homework, and if my cell phone doesn't work, they usually call my room.

My problem lays mostly with the fact that I don't think random people, let alone little kids, should be running around with the fanciest, most flashy cell phones in existance lol. You are right though, he doesn't talk in it... although all his friends get up and say something instead.

As for the talking loudly in public places... no, it doesn't bother me in general that severely. I was exaggerating for the most part heh. However, I'd have to say a vast majority of people speaky REALLY loudly into their cell phones. I swear, everyone I know practically speaks in their loudest outdoor voice into the things.

So we're not really talking running around during rush hour on a down town sidewalk, or at some busy amusement park... we're talking close vacinities, restaurants, classrooms, movie theaters and stores (which generally aren't all that loud). It get's really annoying, I'd say... especially considering how often I am downtown, which is a very tight and crowded place when you're inside.

My band director was telling us about how the CLEVELAND ORCHESTRA had a problem w/ cell phones. They play long,elegant pieces of music, and rude people just kept having their cell phones go off in the middle of their piece of music! They even developed a piece where they take out their cell phones and make them ring at the same time so people get the message....it's sad to ruin good music like that...

Here's a true story.

It was my Junior year of high school, and I was in the drama club as part of the technical crew. The cast was currently working on a musical called "Kiss Me Kate." The director decided to make a few re-writes to the script for their performance...

During the first scene of the show, somebody's cell-phone rings... loudly. And interrupts the entire flow of the scene. The actors peer into the audience, point out the guy whose phone rang, call for Security, and have the man thrown out of the theatre. It was all planned and added in by the director, the sound guy (who provided a loud phone ring to play over the speakers), a stage hand picked to play a security guard, and a stage hand picked to play the audience member with the phone.

Very funny stuff.
