Epsilon
I've played almost every Final Fantasy game there is. I'm a Final Fantasy freek!!! Ok, in every FFgames you can find one character from every game. Take the newest FFgame, in it Yuna is there. If you where to look at FF9 you'd find Dagger to have the same design as Yuna only more childish. Even in FF:Legend 3 for the first GameBoy, Gloria is the same design as Dagger. And Rinoa has the same design as Yuna only a bit younger. In the newest, even newer then FF10 is FF11 for the PS2 and computer. The main character's girl friend has the same basic design as all the rest of the others. So the point is why do they always have the main girl chacater with the same basic desing? You know Black hair, and magical powers. How can people notnotice this?
VinceValentine
I know exactly what you mean. I have thought the exact same thing for a long time. It actually quite annoys me sometimes. It would be way cool if they had like a totally new sort of girl. Like one that has like blonde hair or something that isn't black and if she doesn't have magical powers like yuna and garnet and aeris and terra etc, they should have a kick-*** chick like tifa, she was cool. Sandy
You have to be really blind if you can't see the stereotypic characters repeating in every game. Luckily only their appereance is stereotypical, not how they behave or what background they have (Garnet was a total princess, Rinoa was a rebel, Yuna was a goodie-good summoner, Tifa was an arse-kicking bar hostess, Terra was a child of an esper, etc.) But here's some categories I've found: 1) Youngster seeking himself (always the main character; eg. Tidus, Zidane, Squall, Cloud). You can actually divide these into gloomy (eg. Squall, Cloud), and optimistic (eg. Tidus, Zidane, Locke) 2) Damsell in distress (the leading ladies; eg. Yuna, Rinoa, Garnet, Aeris, Terra) 3) Strong Xena-type woman (the supporting women#1; eg. Tifa, Lulu, Qustis, Freya) 4) Oddity (all the freaks and beasts in the games; eg. Kimahri, Red, Quina, Cait Sith, Mog) 5) Muscle-man (the supporting men#1; eg. Wakka, Barret, Sabin) 6) Mysterious warrior (the supporting men#2; eg. Auron, Amarant, Vincent, Shadow) 7) Knight in a shining armor (the supporting men#3; eg. Steiner, Cyan) 8) Happy-go-lucky girl (the supporting women#2; eg. Rikku, Eiko, Selphie, Yuffie, Relm) Sure, there are some of characters that don't fall into any of my categories, but if you think of them, there isn't that much of them. Interesting, aye? Sakura
Youy can't forget the mages. In every game they're pretty much the same. They have the glowing yellow eyes, pointy hats just each game the graphics of them becomes better. But there isn't a mage in X and XI.

You know, it's funny how people often seem to think all black mages are like that in FF games, when in reality there are only a few of them from the series that have mages like that. I mean, there's only (excluding FFII and FFIII, since I've never played them) FFI, FFV, and FFIX that have black mages like that. What about in FFIV? You've got Rydia and Palom, both black mages (well, Rydia is also a caller, but still), and neither of them have the pointy hat or glowly eyes. In FFX there's Lulu, a black mage, and she doesn't have that outfit. And of course, in the games where everyone can use magic, there aren't any like that. The pointy hat and glowy eyes are a minority, not a majority.
Sandy
And I wasn't talking about job-classes, I was talking about characters (mainly from the games 6-10). Most of FF9's characters are dressed like the job-classes of the older games (Zidane=thief, Vivi=black mage, Freya=dragoon/red mage, Amarant=monk etc. (Garnet even wears a white mage robe when she tries to escape the Alexandria Castle). In FFX-2, many of those "old-style" outfits are brought back with a modern decoration, like the black mage-outfit (a pointy hat combined to a miniskirt ;) ). Epsilon
The black mages outfits are fine, at least the black mages have their own personalities. Plus the mages usually get new things in each game. By the way I think their running out of ideas for the Final Fantasy games. Sony should make one for the FF move Spirts with in, I'd play a game like that for hours.

Break
Yeah, it seems to be the earlier games that had the yellow eyed, pointy-hat and blue-robe wearing Black Mages in them. The newer ones have just regular characters in them who are classed Black Mages, unless in the game everyone can use magic..
Epsilon
In every game all the characters can some how use magic. Could be a summoning or their weapons...Pluse every once in a while when playing the games you might be able to find some thing about the "Classic Mages" from people you talk to in your journey. He doesn't even use any magic-like attacks, such as Edge's Ninja abilities. There's also Yang from FFIV, for another one off the top of my head. Heh, sorry if I sound like I'm just shooting down peoples' points, but I can't stand just letting something like this go when I know it's wrong. ^_^; I just don't want people to have the wrong information.

Crystal Chronicles is also supposed to be released on that same day, so all you American FF-fans can just throw a major party on that day. ;) Now, back to the topic. :toothy:
Okay, I've gotten rid of the off topic posts. Sandy
*Whimpers*Sorry, it was just an innocent sidenote... :( Since FFX-2 was under discussion and all... :bawl: No, the discussion is different costumes, appearances, classes and personalities of different characters in FF games. -Break Heh, well... Actually, I've been trying my damnest to create something similar to the FF-games and their style, but somehow it is impossible! I guess it needs a roomfull of skilled gamedesigners to come up with something like FF... Heh, some of you might recall my FF Utopia rpg, which became more of my personal fanfic, and it flopped... :bluesweat Well, now I'm planning a sequel to FF-7 (don't know why, I just felt up to it), so maybe some day you'll see a thread named "FF7-2 by Sage!" up in this forum. (Just don't know where to put it...) I've even redrawn the characters, but somehow they just don't match the original designs... Oh well... Break
Yeah, I do think that the costumes and character designers for the FF games are absolutely amazing. I'm managed to design/draw a few costumes, they're pretty "far out" and imaginative, but no where near the amount of imagination that Square puts into its costumes.
Epsilon
Yeah, it took me about 2 years to even come close with Squre Soft design, my charcater designs compared to their's still suck.
Guest Zeh
I'd never even try to do something like them. Each game they always come up with innovative new costumes, i have enough trouble drawing cartoon characters, lol. I'm looking forward to FFX-2, they'll have some old costumes, on new fully 3D characters, hopefully it'll be interesting.
