Kikaider

Hi, I'm back from saving the world and feel like talking, ;)

I haven't been on this board for a while but I was wondering if anyone has seen "Kikaider" on Adult Swim? The show is about a boy named Jiro who is an android built by the mysterious Dr. Gill. He seeks to realize what it is that makes one human and on the way, battles numerous android monsters of Gill's own design, transforming into a sentai-esque uniform (anyone not in the know, sentai is the series of Japanese shows that Ultraman and Power Rangers are derived from).

The show looks like something created by Osamu Tezuka (Astroboy, Metropolis) as the characters all have cartoonish appearances more close to that of a western animated series rather than "traditional anime". It also features several voices familiar to Digimon fans (Dave Wittenberg as Jiro, Melissa Fahn, and several others) while the series does appear as though it were an animated Power Rangers show, it is very serious, and in some cases, very depressing. Other than the fast camera angles and depressing themes of "can a machine be human" (done to death in Asimov stories)the series seems pretty decent. Only four episodes have been shown so far. Is anyone watching (especially episode one which I missed.)

Yeah I have been watching it b/c I watch from 11-2 everynight, but I don't like it at all so far! I don't think I will either, it just doesn't seem interesting to me. Actually I really don't like it! But the plot is somewhat interesting I suppose.

the character designs get on my nerves so badly. it makes me want to wring the artists' necks. other than that, it's alright, I guess. it's certainly not the best thing they've got on Adult Swim, but it's okay for the moment. I still want Lupin back though.

as a second thought, shouldn't this be part of the Cartoon Network thread, or is it just me? 0.o'

I like it. :D

The only things that really bug me about it are
1) the character design. Especially the noses on some people... O.o
2) The fighting could be more interesting, and Jiro doesn't have to finish off his enemy in one episode. That just makes the fight seem rushed.

And I really like the whole android-to-human theme. I'm just weird like that.

I've been watching it, and I must say, I'm impressed. The animation is a little odd, but the plot makes up for it.

Oh, a fun tid bit: this is based off an old Sentai (live action) series of the same name.

I've seen the last 2 episodes that they have shown, and I have nothing bad to say about it. I like the Tezuka style of animation and character designs.

I also really like Jiro's guitar playing skills, and his transformation sequence is pretty cool.

But I do have one question, why is it that all the robots he fights look like bugs? Hopefully this will change as the series progresses.

I love this show! luckily for me, I live in AK, so it comes on at 11 instead of midnight! But, i think his guitar is cool, but Dr. Gill didnt create him....Dr. Something or other did...you know the girl that looking for him? Her dad built him, and her last name is not Gill.

Well I watch it Mon.-Thurs. but I have to agree with some people, the character design really bothers me. I think it is ok.. but it isn't the best thing i've seen. The story line is pretty good, but one problem... the fighting is quite bad. In a good anime, to me, the fighting has to be good as well.

I like the show so far even though I only saw the first 2 episodes. Everything is cool except for the character designs. Sometimes their heads look really big or that could be the stress from the N.Y.C. state wide test I had the past couple of days. Otherwise I eally like the show so far.

The show is not as old as it may look. The artists riskily chose to go with an old style of character art. (That guy with the huge chin and glasses and the little girl look like they are from "A Pup Named Scooby Doo" lol)

I've only seen one episode of Kikaider and I like the story, I think.

I actually look foward to watching more of this show. I like the plot and the characters, but the downside is I don't like the way some of their mouths are drawn. They just don't look right, then again a guy with a afro that changes into a giant android bug thing doesn't look right either. Other than a few character design problems, I like this show. I've been watching Adult Swim since I got out of school every night from about 11-2.

yes, the mouths are what bother me! or at least that's one part of how they look that bothers me. especially on that one girl, she's always got that pouty look on her face; reminds me of a cat for some reason. it irks me :twitch:.

I saw it, I wasn't too impressed with the animation (stick like arms and legs), but the plot is pretty good..from what I saw anyways

New Opinion
After a watched a few more episodes, I changed my mind. I love Kikaider. I love the plot and I think the whole robot Geminai thing is cool. I also love the music.

Yeah, I've seen it and I don't like it at all. Okay I watch the 1st eposide to see what it was about, and I watch the second just to give it justice, but it lost my interests very quickly. And I don't like the character design at all..YUCK!! Couldn't the artist have spent a little more time to develop the characters looks? I don't like it at all...Bring Back Bebop.

i personally like the character designs, the tezuka designs bring back a feeling of nostalgia.. (dunno how.. i'm only 15..) expecting another character named rock to pop up..

don't worry, lupin's still on (how do they get an i in that? the katakana was more like lupahn..) , just later, its after reign. character designs for reign are nice looking if only he didn't give the male's lips, makes it look french. but back to topic, i've been watching it and besides being a bit dark, i like it. all adult swim needs to do now is get some subtitled up :)

I didn't think I'd like this show, but after a week's worth of viewing, I'm really starting to like it. I'm even getting used to the art style, although Mitsuko and her mother's eyes bother me (they look like Pikachu's). Just give this show a chance. The story is way more in depth than the art style is.
