What do you think makes the perfect villan?
For me i think what makes a perfect villan is that childish evil where they dont say much but laugh evily a whole lot and the kill for the shear pleasure of it. Like kid buu off DBZ and mad pierrot off Cowboy Bebop and like Jet said in that ep "there is nothing more pure and cruel then a mind of a child" i tihnk that what he said well tell me what do you think makes the perfect villan.

The "Perfect Villain" is a guy (or girl - gender's irrelavent) who knows exactly what they're doing... and is horrendously evil about it...

The idea of childish villainy isn't really one I appreciate too much, although that quote you mentioned is so true, a child's mind is incredibly cruel, but only because they're too young/naive to know any different. But childish villainy isn't really "true" evil...

We had a discussion last year somewhen in my English class, and we decided that for a "villain" (fine we were discussing Shakespeare but it applies here too) to be truely evil, they must have no drive in what they're doing. They must be cold and calculated, and care nothing for the opinions of others, but they must be completely in control. Like, you're saying childish villains, but to me they're not really villains. More like makers of mischief. Very bad mischief, but mischief nonetheless.

Well, I'm done O_o I would rant more but I have to get to work! Maybe I'll come back and rant some more O_o!

Yes ranting is always good Childish villans do have no idea what their doing they just live for the kill and their childish minds just aid in the killing. When they kill does any reakon it's like playing with their prey the usally look like they are having lots of fun killing it's like a game a big childish game that would be dreamt up by the twisted mind of a child. If i were to become a villan i would have a childish mind cause if you say they aint the most evil they are certainly the most cruel and i just love that evil laugh they do it never ends i wish i could laugh like that.

i would say that a perfect villan is someone who has nothing to do with another enemy in the same series.
i know it sounds weird but there's nothing i dislike more than the good guys in the story beating a powerful opponent, then we see a new opponent who is only after what his/her counterpart started.

another point is that this perfect villan has to be stealthy. well...in a manner of speaking stealthy, they shouldn't be confronted until about half way through the series.

edit: if this doesn't make sense i'll change it :)

I'd say a perfect villan should be silent. Never talk. Get beaten around, but always get back up. Some one who dosen't care for poeple and just kills slowly and painfully. Buu wasn't really that good. Just killed people in a click, but nice and slow is what I like!

ill say he must have conciounse of the harm hes doing, i think the difference between Evil being and a villain, is that an Evil being understands what he does and certanly enjoys it, a villain not nessecerly enjoys what he does, he may just do it for his livings...

I think that's pretty much it right there. The perfect villain must know exactly the sort of evil that he/she is committing and have absolutely no qualms about how they go about it. They can even enjoy it if the situation calls for it.

In my mind, a good villain (Oxymoron alert!) should not simply be evil. tHey should have a clear, understandable motivation. Also, they should be capable at what they do.

When you have a relatable villain who is very skilled, it creates a sort of tradgedy within their character. I reference Magneto from the X-Men. He's a brilliant man, and, to some people, likeable. Yet he chooses a dark path when he could do so much good. He could be anything, but he's a criminal. That's kind of sad.

A good villain shouldn't put up with backstabbing lackies. i hate backstabbing lackies. On the other hand, a good villain won't kill his lackies for minor reasons.

As for personality, that's a personal taste.

you took the words straight out of my mouth. the only way they could be truly evil is if they knew what they were doing and did it anyway. Deathbug said a bit of what came to mind mind as well.

the perfect villain in my mind has to have a sound mind, who is smart, cunning, calculating. someone who is somewhat like a psychologist who knows how people think, and uses that information to manipulate people into doing what he wants, if he chooses not to make them do it by force. he would also be incredibly strong and capable of killing/torturing people on his own, without the use of other people or mechanisms. he wouldn't be dependent on other people for anything, so he could be just as dangerous on his own as with a whole army of people working for him. basically, he would have no weaknesses. the only person who would be able to beat him would be someone who was better than him in both cunning and strength. .......hmmm, I think that should about do it.

I believe a good villian is a person who is not entirely evil. Its a person who does evil things for a cause that you can relate to. This makes you question if his actions are just or not, and if the "hero" is doing the right thing.

A good example would be Enishi from Rurouni Kenshin.
All he wanted was to revenge his sister's death.
But I guess it was the way he went about it that caused him to come off as a villian.

But thats just my opinion:D

Well I don't really have an example of my perfect villan. In fact I don't even know if there is such a villan. But i'd say that he would have to be quiet. He would also keep to himself about most things as well as have a plan for everything. Of course he would have to be pure evil. It would help if he's actually gotten away with things before and isn't always someone you can stop. It gets annoying when the villan always wins or loses.

Guest SpyDer
I beleve being cold brutal and uncaring makes a perfect villan... Just like Vicious. For example, he frames Gren for espionage for no real reason. When Lin sacrifices himself to save Vicious, he doesn't bat an eye, but merely accepts it has his due. He kills without a second thought, and disposes of one syndicate Elder with the comment, "You'll cry red tears...".

i think the perfect villian is someone who has motivation and will do anything or kill anyone to get that goal. i think this villian would be a mix between knives from trigun and seshomaru from inuyasha. knives does not care what or who (even his own brother) gets in the way of his goals, and seshomaru is always calm and knows exactly what he is doing.

I think there is a huge difference between a good villian and a perfect villian.

A perfect villian is evil personified. A good example of this would be Femto from Berserk, his actions were so atrocious
killing all of his followers and murdering and raping his best friends love
that he could be classified as the embodiment of evil. Another example of this would Vicious, who murders and kills out of greed and personal pleasure.

A "good" villian is just a villian that is interesting, usually due to his charecter flaws. Magneto's love for Charles Xavier causes him to be quite an interesting charecter in the X-Men. Another example is how Vegeta's pride causes him to be the most dynamic charecter in DBZ

The perfect villian has to have the lack of respect of a normal human being. Knows how to always get what they want and when to get it. Kill for the pleasure of seeing other in pain and to take that pain to make him even stronger and more powerful. Also has to get to know the victim, what there mark is like and what they do on a daily routine. Become actual friends with them and then later on backstab them and kill them just for the he11 of it. Later on the villian should show no remorse and never keep what they had just done in the back of there mind and realize what they are doing is just a game...and no matter what he/she has to win.

A great villian has for characteristics a hate for human beings and life. A villian that will stop at nothing for power inclusing killing his own people. He or she have to manipulative and extremely smart. A villian must enjoy watching others suffer and betray his own friends just to be the best of the best. He/she must be aware of the damage he/she is making.A great villian example is Knives from Trigun, to be the best he even tries to kill his own brother like Sesshomaru(but Sesshomaru has a bit of heart)

In the way of traits needed to be the perfect villian you have to keep you're cool at all times. When you have you're enemy it gunpoint (or any other weapon) don't start making long speeches, just kill them. You have to have a single good/cool weapon or have a large arsenal of good weapons. you need to have the looks to, scars on you're face and a lethal sounding voice. when it comes to an outfit you don't want something to flambuoyant but dark and simple looking like a black trench-coat or something of that nature. You also need power, whether it be magical, physical, or something else that's a key point in making a good villain.

When it comes to villains I've seen so far Knives was good, a bit insane, but good. How he was just drinking Tea (or whatever was in that cup) when
Vash walked up to him showed that he was relaxed and confident, he also didn't hesitate to long to attempt to kill Vash when he had both Angel Arms pointed at Vash, too bad Vash had Wolfwood's gun in the sand
(too bad, what am I saying).

So far the best villain I've seen is Vicious(Cowboy Bebop). He had the simple yet cool outfit. He had an awesome weapon, he also had power, not magic, or strength but he had a whole syndicate under his control. He didn't talk to much but when he did it sounded cool what he said added to his villain quality. In the end for me Vicious takes gold medal.

The perfect villian naturally must be calm, cool, and colloected, and he/she must also be cold, calculating and uncaring. Yet most of all they must speak the truth about things. They must cause us to rethink our definition of what is right and what is wrong. They don't neccessarily have to kill people without remorse (good tool), but they have to use actions that the average person might think twice about using. A good example is Sephroth. He made sure to get what he wanted, and he killed and used people so that he could. "What I have shown you is reality, what you remember, that is the illusion." -Sephroth. He made Cloud think about the way he moved in the world, made him realize that it's not that easy. (Although Cloud kind of already knew that). But basically, the perfect villian has to break the hero or protaganist's way of thinking and going through life. the villian shouldn't be confused with the antihero/protaganist, who is merely there to challenge everything the hero does regardless of where he/she stands when it comes to motivations.

It amazes me how many people classify a "perfect" villian by such a horrible cliche. Cold and calculating? Hell, no. A true villian is someone who knows how to get into your head and turn you about. It doesn't need to kill thousands of people or tear people apart -- it needs to turn you about. A sadist who can thumb through your brain like an open book would be my pick. He enjoys his 'work' and he knows how to ruin you forever. There's no stopping someone who is DRIVEN and motivated to do something, especially when this person knows what the hell they're doing. Someone distant and stoic will only look at something with a degree of professional knowledge; someone with a desire to destroy and obliterate you will be so passionate about it they won't think twice about anything.

I think the perfect villian is one you love to hate. They have to be smart, too! They don't have to always be cold. Infact, they should be able to use emotion to thier advantage. A hotheaded villain is no better or worse than a cold one, the question is, do they have control? They have to really test the hero/main character. They also have to have things in common with the main character because a good villian is not a perfect black to the hero's perfect white. A good villian is really a dark shade of grey that acts as a foil to the main character's lighter grey. It's also good if you look at the villain and think that maybe your hero COULD have ended up that way under different circumstances. Good villians have abiguities to them.

Here are my votes for perfect villians and why...

Fuma from CLAMP's X- He honestly thinks he is doing what's best for the world but the reader/viewer can't help but say he's evil. He's charismatic and cold at the same time. He is uncompromising. He knows what he wants and does what he has to to get it. He is completely sure of himself, the opposite of Kamui's initial uncertainty. And yet, according to Fuma
if Kaumi had chosen to side with the dragons of earth, Fuma would be our 'hero'
Seishiro from CLAMP's Tokyo Babylon (he's in X too...) -
He starts out as Subaru(the hero)'s friend. Later you learn it was all a game, or was it? Seishiro could fill an olympic size pool with all the blood he's spilled. He even killed his own mother, but he couldn't kill Subaru in the end. Does that mean he loves Subaru?
This is the kind of ambiguity that makes an awesome villain.

Gendo Ikari- I hate him! The way he uses people all for his sick little plan, even his own son! But what IS his plan? Can we ever really understand his intentions? What about the people who let themselves be used? Would Gendo have any power if they just said NO? The fact that he can use people to carry out his horrible means to his questionable end is all part of being a good villain.

Chaos, you rock. Thanks for mentioning the bolded text.

Added to that, I think that a villain shouldn't TRY to be 'evil', but should seem to do it naturally. Evil laughter seems like a desperate attempt to seem evil to me.

In fact, if a villain that I absolutely knew was bad came up to me with a smile and a wave, I think I would run in terror.
