Guest Musahi
Well I'm bored, so here comes a new version of "My Music not Overview. In V3 people kept questioning my use of "overview" and I couldn't think of another word, so that is how this came to be. Hopefully this one will run a bit smoother than the 3rd. Rap Recently I haven't been listening to artists collectively, just a few songs stuck in my playlist somewhere. But there is one new rap song I have fallen in love with. It's called "Step Daddy" by Hitman Sammy Sam. It's so funny, the whole song is an arguement between some kids and their stepfather. I just have to post some of the lyrics. [HSS:] Hey! Hey! Ya'll get ready to take ya bath, get ready to go to bed, put dem UNO cards up, ain't so sing no Itsy Bitsy Spider tonite, run yo water, put yo sister down you think i'm playin!?!? [Kids:] The Itsy Bitsy Spider went up the water spout! [HSS:] SHUT UP! [Kids:] Down came the rain and washed the spider out! [HSS:] GO TO BED!! [Kids:] Out came the sun and dried up all the rain! [HSS:] SHUT UP!! [Kids:] And the Itsy Bitsy Spider went up the spout again! [HSS:] GO TO BED!! *laughs insanely* o O'' And I'd like to recomend the Eminem, 50 cent, and Busta Rhymes dis to Ja Rule over the Tupac song "Hail Marry" Older Rock-ish stuff Recently one of my friends came over to my house (he is registered as Soundwave2x here) and he is really into a bunch of 60s - 80s music. And he downloaded like a megabyte of music on my computer, and I have my playlist running almost all day. So I've heard everything he downloaded. I've always loved Led Zepplin, but I never actually wanted to buy one of their CDs or anything. After listening to No Quarter, Black Dog, and Stairway To Heaven, I am a huge fan. =P I've also been listening to Iron Maiden, Guns N' Roses, Rush, and Aerosmith (which is my favorite older band). Death/Heavy Metal, Punk, Ska, Hardcore, Emo, and whatever else As you can tell I don't have a sense for genres, I used to think everything I listened to was either PUNK or METAL. But there are so many sub-categories and stuff now I can't keep track. If someone could explain all the differen't genres to me I would be VERY happy. New Band of the thread: Molotov, I doubt anyone here as heard of them (maybe Ken). They are a heavy band but they speak spanish. I have no clue what they are saying but they are ****ing awesome. This one song "Puto" (which means something along the lines of dumbass) is like the coolest song ever. You have to hear this band. =D Two other bands I just recently discovered are Assorted Jellybeans and Hangnail. I really enjoy their stuff, Hangnail sounds especially cool. I love the guitar in the song Taken For Granted. I'm back into KoRn, but mainly just the song All In The Family. Well the whole album it's on, Follow The Leader I think. Other than that I listen to AFI/MSI/Tenacious D. Thats about it... Daniel's Picks Danzig - 777 MSI - I Hate Jimmy Page Led Zepplin - Black Dog (In case your wondering, yes I did put those two next to eachother on purpose. =P) Molotov - Puto Rush - Limelight Tiger Army - Devil Girl Tenacious D - The Greatest Song in the World

Guest Musahi
Originally posted by wrist cutter How can you like a band you can't understand?
Well, I start listening to the song and I enjoy it! Lyrics aren't everything, to everyone. I like their sound, sometimes I can't understand what some bands are saying in English. I really have no interest of what some spanish band is saying, other than PUTO!
James
I'm the same. I listen to Rammstein, yet I don't understand the lyrics (though I've read them in English). Sometimes it's about lyrics, but for me personally, I prefer the "feel" of the music. That's why I listen to a lot of music without lyrics, I guess. But yeah, understanding isn't really correlated with the feeling/enjoyment of the piece, I think. Anyway, GunMetal, I still have to question this thread. Is this really much of a discussion? You're basically walking in and saying "here's what I like, here's what I'm listening to". And that's it. It's more of a single statement than a discussion. This is the reservation that I've expressed with similar threads in the past. Still, having said that, maybe this discussion can go somewhere. Maybe. o_O

James
It's not so much a question of how many replies you received. It's more a question of giving people something real to discuss. At least with v3, we were discussing something, rather than reading someone's "currently listening to" list. So, that's all I'm saying; that I hope a discussion can be made out of this. Perhaps you should include some questions or prompt some kind of discussion, so as to be within the rules.

James
Well, people really can't get away with that. Where it's picked up (at least as bad as the example you demonstrated), it's dealt with. Secondly, I'm telling you what is/isn't inappropriate about your thread. To give you a clearer example, I'll compare it to something else. If I wanted to talk about my favourite video games (or the games I've been playing lately), and if I simply created a thread listing them and talking about them, that in itself may possibly be closed (though that's down to the discretion of the Moderator). But if I talked about recent games that I like and said something like "what is your opinion on these titles?" or something of that nature, I'd be prompting a discussion. That's all it is really. I'm not saying that the thread should be closed or deleted, I'm just asking you to put some thought into the concept of opening it up a little bit. Semjaza
I honestly do not understand why this is a big deal each time. People have failed to see that the original two threads did result in conversation. This thread basically encourages people to check out or simply discuss the bands in question. That's how I see it and I believe that's how he means to present this. Why this is any different than the multitude of threads that basically say "I love _____! What do you think?" I have no idea, especially considering there is more going on here if you want to look for it. And honestly, even in V3 of this Endymion and myself both added stuff that was worth discussing to these threads. They just keep getting torn down by semantics. I will say this is ironically the least well balanced of the three as you kind of just seem to randomly mention things without getting into it much. However, that wasn't even a problem in the last one and the same thing happened. So what do I know? ------------------------ As for the genres, I'm not one to bother with it. I push everything into basic genres and leave them there, because that's all most boil down to anyway. I'm not a genre whore, for lack of a better term. I always find it odd when people argue whether something is one sub-sub division of metal or another. Whatever. And I know Molotov. They aren't something I'd personally be into anymore. Metal bands have to be incredibly inventive for me to even care anymore. I basically just grew out of the sound. Assorted Jelly Beans are fun too. I forget which disc I have, but it's the one with the monster in a hooded sweatshirt. They remind me somewhat of the Beastie Boys when they don't rap (there are lots of tracks by the Beastie Boys that have a punk sound - they even started out as a punk band lol). I always found it weird that the Vandals thought AJB were some sort of second coming though... comparing them basically to Operation Ivy, when I don't feel there is much of a comparison. Strangely, neither of the two bands even seem to be in people's minds anymore for the most part heh.
James
I'm not going to argue with you or GunMetal. I'm simply telling GunMetal that rather than simply listing the music he's been listening to, he might want to prompt more of a discussion from the membership at large. There is a substantial difference between this thread and similar ones where discussion is prompted. So, that's all there is to it. As I said, I don't intend to close the thread. I'm glad that someone has kicked off some discussion on the subject, at least.
They just keep getting torn down by semantics.
I do not welcome that comment. In the gaming forums, if someone posts something like "these are the games I've been playing lately" and they included a list of the games with a few thoughts, such threads would likely be closed. And they have been closed before. So what I am merely asking GunMetal to do, is to be a bit more inclusive. To provoke a discussion by posing some questions, for instance. That is not too much to ask. Do not misinterpret my comments as an attempt to force GunMetal to do something else, or to say that the entire thread is against the rules. I'm simply providing advice for his future threads, that is all.

I don't think we needed all of the debate on the subject, really. lol It was a pretty basic and easily understood tip (maybe not though lol). ~_^ Anyway, regarding the thread itself...it seems like you've got quite an eclectic taste in music, within the genres you've provided here. Are you interested in Rammstein? They're an interesting band to listen to, if you are into hard rock. I like them primarily because they fuse electronica and rock really well. As I said earlier, I don't really understand their lyrics (unless I read them in English), but it's more the melody of the song that I'm interested in.

James
Ah yes. My favourite song from Rammstein is definitely Engel. That's a great track (weird video clip too). But I also like Links 2-3-4. That's from their newest album. I must admit, I don't like their newest album as much as Sehnsucht, but it's still pretty good.

It's a bit slow for my tastes. WOAH, that girls voice is very eerie. But it's still way too slow for me, not heavy enough either. *gasps* That girls voice is going to give me nightmares. Cool techno sounds here at the end. *nods head to beat* Getting a bit heavier, but that whistling reminds me of a western flick or something. Like that Pace Picante comercial. o O' I like Du Haste way better though. Note: I was commenting on the song as I listened...=D
James
Hehe, Engel is somewhat slow...but I think it's pretty heavy. It's certainly heavy if you read the lyrics. ~_^ Du Haste was really the popular song. It was the track that the most people liked. I didn't mind it, but I found it a bit repetitive. Not bad, but not a favorite. Engel is just more edgy and experimental, which I like. It's got a really distinctive and unique sound. But yeah, Rammstein is generally a pretty unique band. There is a lot of recycled junk out there, when it comes to rock. I like the fact that Rammstein have embraced the computer, rather than cynically reject it.
Transtic Nerve
OVERVIEW! You call that an overview! lol j/k Well since the subject changed to Rammstein... Du Hast was NOT the best track on that album who's name I can't spell. Sensult or something. Their first album, Rammstein (which not alot of people heard of or have for that matter) was probably their best. They are one of those bands that haven't changed their style much, except the visual quality of their stage appearance. Rammstein is a unique very GOOD band. I'm surprised they got popular here at all.
Semjaza
James and I talked about this, I think when we first met heh. I don't even remember how it came up anymore, but we both agreed that Engel was the best track on Sehnsucht (there is also an english version). I think most people liked Du Hast because of its simplicity, but there was nothing special about it. It was amusing when the news tried to cite Rammstein as a "German hate music" band after Columbine for this song. I think it's about him not wanting to marry some girl or something heh. Either way, Mutter is a vastly superior album, in my opinion. for some reason they dropped out of the spotlight after Sehnsucht, which I guess is somewhat expected. I'd have to say a few of the previous ones even beat out Sehnsucht. I don't know how unique they are in terms of sound, as there are bands in other areas that have been doing the same thing for just as long, or longer... However, they've polished their style to a point that it just sounds basically flawless, something I can't say most comparable bands have done. Everything is played with perfect precision. Same with their live shows, if you ever get to see them.
Sui Generis
Rammstein is a unique group period. Their look, their songs, their sound. I think are all unique in their ways. I mean there are bands similar to them, but I don't think I could find one in that area that compares to Rammstein. As for Rammstein being "german hate music." It very well could be I don't really know, but why don't they take the time and listen to American songs as well. Lol. Just dig deep enough and you'll find worse crap here in America so I don't think they could really be considered "German hate Music" in my mind atleast. That is of course if what I just said made any sense at all. Oh and personally I think MSI has better songs than "I hate Jimmy Page." But again thats my opinion. I agree with you on Molotov they are a very interesting and talented band. Of course most people don't know of 'em, but hey its all good they're good and thats all that matters. Although they sound like a rap/rock mix its kinda funny. I enjoy listening to them though. Kind of a Spanish Mindless Self Indulgence lol.
Manic Webb
*looks around the thread* Well, now that people are finally talking about the actual bands mentioned, I can talk about that Step Daddy song. :D Very funny song. I nearly die laughing everytime I hear it, which isn't such a good thing when I'm in the car. If memory serves me, the music sampled in that song came from the 1970s classic "Double-Dutch Bus" song, which would be the exact same song rapper Snoop Dogg learned to speak from, and rapper/producer Missy Elliott got the chorus of "Gossip Folks" from. Still, the lyrics to "Step Daddy" are very funny. [Kids] You ain't my daddy [HSS] SHUT-UP! I'm with you on the whole confusionon rock sub-genre. I have no idea what I'm listening to half the time. If I hear a rock song, I'm afraid to tell some fans what kind of genre I think it is, in risk of getting lynched. That's why I only name bands (both of them) nowadays.
