Semjaza
Anyone that knows me well enough knows the unexplainable hatred I've had for Weezer for quite some time. I guess it needs some backstory. When Weezer first put out the Blue Album in '94, I actually really liked them. They got somewhat popular off Buddy Holly, but they seemed more like a group that everyone I knew liked to make fun of. I was the only one I knew that actually stuck up for them. Cut to the future, where they suddenly got popular again thanks to the Green Album it seems. This always annoyed me for whatever reason. I had stopped listening to them years prior and basically ignored their existance, which was getting harder and harder to do when every girl I knew liked the group. I think I hated them for two reasons. 1.) Years back, I spent $400+ getting a Weezer autographed Fender electric guitar (my "friend" put it on eBay instead of just selling it to me, and I really had to fight for it). It was for a girl I was dating for a Christmas present, as it was her favorite band. All 4 members had signed it, and drew little pictures on it. She loved it. Let's just say the relationship fell apart a bit after. Weezer from then on had a very bad connotation for me. 2.) Another girl I dated loved the band... held me to some sort of bizarre "Rivers Cuemo Standard", where basically she thought good guys had to act like what he sang. I wound up dumping her, and as a result she went nuts on me and said some pretty awful things. Turned a good deal of her friends and such against me, but most of it has since then been straightened out. So ironically, I hated Weezer because of girlfriends. Anyway, I was digging through some chests of mine and found all my old Weezer CDs, a couple of which I never honestly listened to. I ripped them into MP3s and was slightly surprised that they were good all along. I can't say they're a favorite of mine yet, but they're certainly a great band. Last time I let other people affect my music decisions lol. So anyway, I figure there are fans of this band here... so say something.
Shinmaru
Weezer's an okay band, but I haven't listened to any of their music for a while. Maybe I need to do what you did and rummage through my music lol. Anyway, they sound pretty good, Rivers is a good singer, and their songs are nice. They're not one of my favorite bands, but I really can't find much to hate about them.
Shy
Eh, I usually have terrible experience when it comes to buying music. Of the 20+ albums that I have purchased through my life, maybe two or three I am capable of listening to without having "the buyer's remorse." The latest Weezer CD is one of those rare exceptions, and I really enjoy it. The main reason I bought it was because of their "Gone Fishin'" single; any band that features the Muppets in a music video instantly earns my respect. I remember first hearing of them from "Buddy Holly," and there were a couple of other random songs of theirs. Only with the Muppet video did I start looking around online for more information on the band, and I realized that Weezer had sone stuff like "The Sweater Song" which I liked. They aren't my favorite band, but I can't think of many other bands that I listen to as often. Their new CD is pretty good, though. -Shy
wrist cutter
When did Buddy Holly come out? I liked that song back in the day. And then it's like Weezer just disappeared for a long time... that song was all they had. Then in the last year or two it seems like they just exploded in popularity. What happened there? TarMeg1989
Anyway, Here you are talking to a fan of Weezer. My radio station I listen to play Weezer all the time. One of my favorite song which I found very comical is "The Sweater Song". The only negative part about Weezer that I had found was that all there songs almost sound the same. Or at least I think so. Another one of my favorites is "Hash Pipe", that song got me into Weezer. "Hash Pipe" is a song I think is stupid, but good. Anyway later. ~Megan O_o
Semjaza
Originally posted by wrist cutter When did Buddy Holly come out? I liked that song back in the day.
I don't really know to be honest. I stopped paying attention after the Blue Album hit really, which was in 1994 as I said earlier. Buddy Holly was on that disc. Then Pinkterton came out in 1996 (to the person who thinks all Weezer stuff sounds the same, try that disc out... it's quite different, and I'd say their best in my opinion). So I don't know what caused the popularity all of a sudden a few years back. I think it was a combination of two things... The first being the fact that, as far as I know, they didn't have another LP/EP/whatever until 2001 when the Green Album came out. That's a pretty big gap for a band of their type, and probably caused a lot of anticipation and all that. The second is that that sort of sound was just gaining momentum at the time, and Weezer had already established a name for themselves years prior. Other than those two reasons, I have no idea. lol
Queen Asuka
My favorite song by them is "Hash Pipe." It's so fun. I can't help it. I LOVE that song. Even more than I love "Buddy Holly." I have always liked them, I just didn't like "Island in the Sun." Me and Ryan saw them in concert last summer. ^_^
PiroMunkie
What I found odd about their sudden comeback in popularity is that before then I had never heard The Sweater Song, yet that is off the blue album. I do believe it was Hash Pipe that I heard is actually about a homoerotic dream River's had... or something like that, lol. Anyway, Weezer is a pretty good band. Probably one of the only emo bands I enjoy. I have there blue album and have never gotten around to listening to anything off of Pinkerton to see if I actually would want to spend money on it. If someone has any suggestions that have heard that album, I would be happy to hear them.
XeEmO
I'm not a huge Weezer fan or anything and I never have been. But I did see them in concert on my 15th birthday. At the concert my brother bought me a Weezer t-shirt for part of my present (the tickets being the first part). It seems like I wear that shirt once a week and it's getting quite worn out (i'm 16 now so wearing the shirt at least once a week for more than a year...yeah you get the idea). For christmas that year I got some of their CDs as well. I listen to them every once in a while and I still enjoy them. So in my book, Weezer's pretty good. CalmLikeABomb
I've always been a huge Weezer fan. The Blue Album's great, but I think Pinkerton's much better. I heard they're coming out with a ton of new albums, as they've got lots of songs just kind of lying around, already recorded.
Lady Macaiodh
I had the Blue one and Pinkerton, but I never bought anything else since my tastes started getting a lot heavier at that point. My favorite songs by them are "The Sweater Song" and "Say It Ain't So." There was one song on Pinkerton I was pretty obsessed with, but I can't remember any of the titles from that one. *Pounds head on desk* Ah yes, "El Scorcho." "God damn you half-Japanese girls. You do it to me every time." That song could apply to many of us, what with the Japanese fixation around here. Yeah, I was really obsessed with that one. I found it very funny.
Semjaza
I've been listening to a lot of random tracks off of everything but Maladroit (which I don't have). They have some amazingly good songs. I feel pretty damn stupid for ignoring their existance because of people I knew that I thought of whenever I thought of the band. The Blue Album and Pinkerton are definitely my favorite discs. Both are pretty much totally solid. In the Garage and The Good Life are my favorites so far.
Heaven's Cloud
I tend to catagorize music into three genres: Music that I like due to instrumentals, Music that I like due to lyrics, and music that is friggin' awesome all around... Weezer is one of those bands that I tend to stick in the "lyrics" catagory, even though they have pretty solid instrumentals. They do a really good job of telling stories with their music (especially in Pinkerton). I thought that their lyrical strength decreased slightly with the Green Album, however, I thought they made up for it by improving quite a bit instumentally. Overall, I think the band is pretty decent...they aren't extraordinary...but they definatly deserve their fame and popularity.
