I think it's a good book so far...(I wonder what they mean...) but my mom is reading it so we have to share a book until hers comes in the mail of UPS or...FedEx. What really bugs me is she keeps misplacing my Nimbus Two Thousand Book Mark- (HOW DARE SHE!) and I keep losing my page...I love the title of the first chapter-Dudley Demented. I heard rumours, but I'm not about to believe 'em.

I went to the Harry Potter convention thingy at Barnes and Nobles in a nearby city and someone asked "Are you Emma Watson?" and that really freaked me out...anyways, I know who dies, and omigod, I was so upset because he's one of my favorite characters...and I got payed for helping people find what they wanted at the bookstore and pretending to be know-it-all Hermione...the book cover is totally awesome!

So far the book is quite good... I think i'm on page 79 the 5th chapter. I had went to the celibration for the book and stayed there untill about 2:00 a.m. and still didn't have my book so I left. When I went to Target the next day and got it for half the price I was gonna pay and.... NO LINES! But I like it so far, J.K. Rowling really does a good job!

I think that it's a fantastic book so far. It's a lot faster paced than the other books; the action just keeps coming. I'm on page 636 as we speak (chapter 28, I believe). And I really have to say that
Umbridge is the most evil creation in the world. I hate her more than I have hated any character in any book, game, anime, etc. My hatred for her passes even my hatred for Squall from FFVIII (a little off topic, but it's the truth). Her and her stupid detentions...although, it is really funny how everyone jumps all over her when Dumbledore is forced to escape from Hogwarts to cover for Harry. And she deserves every single bad thing that happens to her.
Okay, I'm finally done ranting and spoiling things about the book.

Edit: I finished the book yesterday (about 7:30 AM to be exact) and I'm now just getting to finishing this post...I'm so lazy lol. Now, for some almighty spoilers!
Stupid Umbridge! If you ask me, she got off easy at the end...she deserved way more than she got. Her and her stupid "hem hem." I hate her! (funny non-HP moment: My dad bursting in my room and saying "Umbridge is a *****!") Stupid Umbridge...yeah. I'm also sad to see Sirius go. He was my favorite character, but I'll get over it...eventually. But I'm glad that he was the only one killed (for a moment I thought Tonks had died too). And that fight between Dumbledore and Voldemort was absolutely incredible. Needless to say, Voldemort got a major *** kicking. And I can't believe she did it, but J.K. actually found a way for me to be sorry for Snape...that memory was so sad. I can't believe Harry's dad was such a jackass!
Okay, enough spoiling for me.

I think I preferred the cover on the UK version, personally. Although the book itself
has little to do with an actual phoenix (Fawkes has a really small role in it
, the picture's really pretty.

I was really shocked when I found out who died. I was sure it was going to be
one of Ron's parents. Sirius was my favourite character! *cries*

One thing that does bother me, though- what was that archway that he fell through? I couldn't find an explanation of it anywhere,a nd it really annoys me. I'd be happier if I at least knew why he died.

Ooooh I hated that Umbridge woman to the bitter end. I'm glad Peeves tortured her after the Weasly Twins left Hogwarts. But I'm so mad that Sirius was killed!!!!!!! I mean couldn't have Rowling picked another character?!?!?!?!?! I have half a mind to send a letter to Rowling telling her that was the most stupid thing she could ever do! Sirius was my favorite character!!!!!!
Okay now that I'm done ranting I give this book a 9 out of 10 simply because of what happens near the end.

Well, I barely got it yesterday and I'm on page 68. It's really good so far! Oh, ShadO Mage, it's called a poiler tag. You put [*spoiler] Put what you want to be blacked out here, then [*/spoiler] Without the (*) of course!

Holy...*_* I must say we have some pretty fast readers here. I've been reading the book all day, everyday since I got it, and it's Monday evening now and I just now finished it. I thought I got through it pretty quickly. o_O I'm not sure my brain would process fast enough if I read it all in a day or something, and I'd miss a bunch of stuff. -.-;

So anywho, yeah, I finally finished it, and it's probably my favorite of the series. The thing is, I don't think any of the Harry Potter books has ever stirred such emotion, much less any other book. I mean, you had
Professor Umbridge (sp.?)
who you absolutely loathed, and then
Shnuffles
who just made you so sad
when he died
. I also thought that the trademark ending battle scene was the most intense battle ever...what with the number of people and how brutul everything was.

It's also worth mentioning that the things at the end seemed to happen very quickly, and it was sometimes hard to understand. I don't know...perhaps it was me trying to race to see what happens. One part that I didn't quite get was, what did Harry's aunt have to do with making him stay at the Dursley's every year for protection?

EDIT: Oh yeah, Juuthena, the spinning effect has a role in the book, so while it looks cool it wasn't put in there merely for the art. And Solo, you mind putting up a picture of the UK Harry Potter cover so that we have something to compare it to?

*cries with Solo Tremaine*
he was mine, too! the absolute last person who I wanted to die.
seriously, I did cry when I read it. I wanted to pick the book up and throw it across the room when I finished it. the only thing that kept me from doing it was the fact that it's so freaking thick it would've put a dent in the wall. I want to strangle that madwoman (talkin' about Rowling).

the book is very good, but very frustrating. especially certain characters *cough*
Umbridge, Percy, Cho
*cough*. and yeah, it was nice to see Harry show a bit of a temper.

I agree that the book cover is awesome. it's probably my favorite one so far. all those blues. made me want to sleep ^_^ j/k. and they finally made him look like he was over the age of 12! *happiness!*

Yeah, I just finished reading the book today and I must say, it is one of my favorite in the series so far.
Although, to my utter dislike, it broke my heart to know that one of my favorite characters,
Sirius Black
had to be the one to die. I'm not mad at Rowling though. She did say that she was in tears when she had killed "one of her favorite characters" off. I will miss him dearly, but...I guess there must be some reason it was him.
I am so happy that good for nothing teacher got what was coming to her!
*mouths off about her utter dislike and hatred of Professor Umbridge*
Oh and is it just me or
was it pretty interesting to get a look at James and the gang when they were still students at Hogwarts?
Sure, hehe. Here it be:

There were so many things about the book which I liked. The way it brings up emotions in you is amazing.
I almost found myself yelling at Umbridge for being so horibly controlling (a nice slant on the government trying to get control in schools, methinks); and even at Harry for being so rash and jumping down people's throats.
A lot of the younger children in the UK (who were about 7 or so) didn't like it because of Harry being so angry- they couldn't understand why. But even though I understood what he was going through, it's almost like having someone arguing right in front of you, and makes it rather unnerving to read at times ^_^;
I was glad that Lupin survived, though. Along with Tonks and Moody. Even though they aren't Sirius, they're still nice characters to have around. The bit of dialogue at the end between Moody and Vernon Dursley was really funny ^_^ So it's not all gloom and doom, which is nice. Otherwise it would have been too heavy, I think.

Reading about what happened during the exams was hilarious, too. It was only a short bit, but I really liked it, heh.
Got the book Sunday morning.
Started Monday morning(about 11).
With breaks and distractions, finished at 2:45am.
Now, for Vert's massive spoiler section!
Yes, I hate Umbridge as much as the rest of you. I hated her so much that I think if I was a student there, I'd probably look ahead in my Potions books to figure out how to poison her. *can just imagine her in Slytherin getting off with a month's detention just because Snape was too pleased to expell me* In fact, I woulda done it after she used that quill from Hell on me. (No...Hell is too good for that woman and her quill...)
;_; But this one really gave me the true reason why I always had a soft spot for Snape...I felt so bad for him by the end of Chapter 28. I've never ben teased nearly that badly, but I still know how it feels to be laughed at, and I hate it.
I actually didn't like some parts of Harry's agressivness. It just seemed a bit out of character to me after four years, but I did still manage to feel sorry for him, which means that he was still written well.
As for Sirius...I cried. I haven't cried over a book in just so long(I think the last time was when I was seven), and I started choking up the moment before it happened, because I knew then...:bawl: He was the character that always made me the happiest(though Snape is still my favorite, especially after now).
As for who dies, I have to say one thing:
It will make you upset.

Gah, I'll be so glad when I can read through this thread in it's entirety and not have anything ruined for me. I will probably be finished with it by tomorrow, so yeah!

ANYWHO, I just wanted to vent about Umbridge.
Whenever she banned Fred, George, and Harry from Quidditch, I was so frustrated there were tears in my eyes. I never realized how irritated one can get at a stupid book. She is the biggest ***** in novel history, that's all I have to say.
Well, I can't wait to finish! ^_^

I hate Cho AND
Professor Umbridge.
Harry does seem to be moodier this time, but actually I can't blame him. I think that this book is the best so far, and I always like it when authors can get you to really hate characters.
PROFESSOR UMBRIDGE

I just finished the book at 3:30 this morning. I stayed up reading. The ending was SO sad. I didn't expect
Sirius
to die...it made me cry... a little! I was sad and angry at J.K. Rowling for killing him...also shocked! (highlight the spoilers only if you read the WHOLE book)
As for the rest of the book,
I got so frustrated at Umbridge and Fudge. I wanted to beat them up!! I was amazed the Harry was so moody. Whose fault do you think it is for Sirius' death? Harry, Dumbledore, Volemort, or Sirius himself? I would like to know what you think. I thought that it was really cool that Fred and George got their Joke shop under way.
Well, I thought it was a very good book and I can't wait for the 6th book to come out.

Well, I finished the book at about 3:30 this morning, too. Now I have finally read through this thread and I have a few points to make.

About the archway, to go through it is to be in the land of the dead. One of the characters sort of hinted around to this so it was mostly implied. I'll try to find a quote later, but I think that's what it was. I think the voices that Harry and Luna were hearing were the voices of the death on the other side of the veil.

About Petunia's connection, Dumbledore clearly explained it as thus:
it is an old type of magic that his mother had died to save him. And because Petunia was his last living relative, it sealed a magical bond. That's why the only place that Harry is safe at is his home on Privet Drive.
Pay attention to these things. ^_^

And about the death of
Sirius:
I wasn't even sad. I was left thinking "Is that it?" He wasn't one of my favorite characters actually, and he never appealed to me all that much anyway. Oh well, goodbye to him. I'm just glad it wasn't
Dumbledore.

I got the book on Sunday and finished on Tuesday around 2:00 PM...I loved and hated this book at the same time...it was so frustrating!
Sirius dying, Professor Umbridge, Dumbledore, Harry's temper...
I can really see that a pregnant woman was writing this book...I was so mad about
Sirius's
death that I was determined to, if I saw JKR, would hit her in the FACE. But now i'm not so mad anymore...just in denial.

I'm apart of a mailing group for OOTP and they're all saying that
Sirius really ISN'T dead..beacuse the spell the Bellatrix used on him wasn't described...it just said a jet of light, or something...I don't have the book with me at the moment but JKR didnt' describe the jet of light coming toward Sirius...SO - people think that Bella just threw a stunning spell at him and he just happened to fall behind the veil...
SO there may still be hope...I just don't get why
Sirius had to die...I mean, he was only introduced 2 books ago! And he's had such a rough life...being in Azkaban for almost 13 years, then was forced to be in hiding for 1 year, then beeing cooped up in Grimmauled Place for months on end, and then trying to live down that he was the reason that James and Lily were killed....the guy died on such a bad note...his name wasn't even cleared!
I just feel so bad for Harry because of
Sirius's
death...the way he reacted in
Dumbledore's office
just made me cry...it was so...emotional! I didn't like
Dumbledore
in this book either. He was too...distant. And what's w/ the crap about the
prophecy?!?
That was about the lamest thing i'd ever heard...
The last thing i thought that harry had that voldemort didn't was heart...that was just so STUPID and cliche...::sigh::...as some people are saying, JKR should go back to being homeless, she wrote better back then...
But! I do have some good points...Fred and George were hilarious. I loved their
getaway from Hogwarts...i'm so glad that they started their shop!
and the little passage when
Harry is talking to Ron and Hermoine about he and Cho's kiss..."How was it?" "Wet."
hahahahh....that cracked me up so much. Well...i think this is about the longest reply i've ever written..so..please comment!
i'm so pissed that sirius is dead!!!!

Well, I read the book today. I really shouldn't read long books in one sitting, that always gets me depressed...

This post is general stuff about characters, only major spoilers are in the first paragraph there.
I felt so bad for Sirius throughout the book. Staying all the time at Grimauld (no idea how to spell this one) place, when the thing he wanted most was to be out there doing something. That would have been absolute torture for him--and worse, to have Severus ribbing him all the time. I honestly think it was an act of mercy for him to be killed. He was one of my favorite characters, as well... But I couldn't see Rowling putting him through another year of torture like that. I knew he was going to die. Hated it, of course... But like Remus said, that's how he would have wanted to go.

And Severus--somehow, after reading the fourth book, I expected him not to be so terrible. I was pretty surprised--wow, he really did hate the Fabulous Four, didn't he? I was as surprised as Harry to read all that about James and Sirius. I can assure you that I never acted like that when I was fifteen. *laughs*

But I think it's very interesting, reading about him--we're not just programmed to hate him, we get little tidbits about his life, as well.

Speaking of learning more about secondary characters--how about Neville? I have to admit I was surprised when we first learned about his parents. I hadn't expected him to be much more than a sort of comic relief. But after we heard about them, I thought we'd get to see more about Neville, and we really did. He's hardly the two-dimensional first year who couldn't keep track of his toad.

What does everyone think about Luna, anyway?

In my oppinion, this is the best book in the series so far, and also the best I've ever read. Why? Here's a few reasons:
1: Harry's new attitude. He gets angry a lot more, he's upset about being left out, he feels sympathy for Sirius being stuch at Grimmauld Place, and a lot more. It realy makes him more like a real person.
2: Fred and George Weasly. Those two were at their best in this book, epecially when they set off all those magical fireworks. Their escape was also quite funny. I'm going to miss those two(though I'm sure they'll make appearances again). Hogwarts won't be the same without them.
3: Characters from previous books making appearances. In the book, we saw Remus Lupin, Gilderoy Lockheart, Alastor Moody, and rita Skeeter, among others(I'm not counting those like Sirius, who make regular appearances, or those like Voldemort, who just had to be included).
4: Development of other characters. In the previous books, most of the characters, aside from Harry, Ron, and Hermione, didn't get much development. In this one, we have Neville, Ginny, Luna, Angelina, and Cho, among others.
There are a lot more reasons, but it would take way too long to type them all.
