Well, I just got started with the book today. My friend lent it to me for the night, and bits of the rest of the month. I'm only at page 114, but here are my thoughts so far. :bluesweat

This is definately my favorite Harry Potter book. I loved that part when
his uncle was yelling at him, and all the owls kept coming in. And that final howler letter was really kewl, too. I'm still curious to death on what it ment.
Also, I love how Sirius has a larger role in this book. He's starting to become one of my favorite characters. ^_^

Right now, I'm totally hooked. I'm probably going to read it a second time once I actually buy the book.
I like Luna- I thought she was rather weird and cliquey at first, but she was a character who I gre to like further one, especially when she could see the Thestrals and for various things inside the Ministry of Magic. Also the scene at the end where she was talking to Harry was nice, too. It gave me new hope, heh.

I agree with you about Neville, too- it was nice to see his character developed to more than just a klutz. I expect he'll have a bigger part to play later on, maybe.
I really liked Luna. She sorted of reminded me of myself in an odd sort of way.

What I always wondered was this:
If you can only see Thestrals after you've seen death, how come Harry couldn't see them all along? Didn't he see his parents die? I mean yeah, he was a baby, but he still saw it happen. I guess he has to REMEMBER the death he saw.
It is so funny for me to read all of these replies about people being upset about the death scene. I wasn't even phased.
I guess I never got attached the Sirius all that much. Now, if it was Lupin, then I probably would have gotten very frustrated. I really REALLY like him for some reason.
OOOOOH oh yeah, about Dumbledore and Neville:
I don't see how you can hate Dumbledore in this book. He pointed out exactly why he had to remain so distant. He didn't want to. And he obviously still cared about Harry, as seen in the scene where he was confronted about the DA meetings. And I mean, he even claimed it was his own club, so come on. How can you not love Dumbledore! I just want to HUG HIM! I was so scared it was him that was going to die, but as I got farther in the book, I knew it wasn't going to be him.

And about Neville, I thought it was so awesome how that he could have been the boy that they were speaking about in the prophecy. Wouldn't THAT have been interesting? I wonder how Neville would have turned out if that was the case?
Okay, one last thing, and this one is about Professor Trelawney:
I absolutely loved the fact that she was the one to give that prophecy. For someone so fake, she can do it sometimes. I guess it has to be in times of dire importance. But I was so amazed adn excited! ^_^
Anywho, done ranting for today. ^_^

Well... I guess for me the death scene itself wasn't so upsetting as such-
it was just the fact that it was him. As a scene it was fairly surreal- there was no lingering goodbye, or even a body left behind or anything. He just disappeared.

I was glad that it wasn't Lupin, though. At least he's still here. But I liked Sirius more, personally. He seems to be a stronger character to me.

I thought it was good of Dumbledore to stay distant, but as we see the story more or less through Harry's eyes he's pictured up until that point to be rather infuriating, because that's what Harry feels- we don't see Dumbledore's side to it until much later, although I guessed he'd have a good reason for it. He usually does, heh. Although his plan didn't work this time. And that was another thing that was probably so shocking about it was that Dumbledore made a mistake in not telling Harry what had happened for so long and mis-judging him in a way.

But damnit! If only Harry'd kept up with his Occlumency lessons... There are so many mized feelings about all the characters in the book- we see so many different sides to everyone in it. Sirius, Harry, Dumbledore. It's fantastically diverse.
Hey, don't forget about Snape.
The little peak into his memories we get in Harry's first Occlumency lesson and when Harry sees into the Penisieve (is that spelled right?) really show a different side to Snape. In the beginning, he's really the character everyone loves to hate, but you end up really feeling sorry for him (at least I did).
That's true.
But I still dislike Snape for refusing to let Harry continue. He must have known how important it was to him and to Dumbledore, but he did nothing. I know it was a very distant and in many ways disturbing memory, but... I dunno. I think I'm in denial, heh.

Um... it's spelt 'Pensieve', by the way ^_^;
I read it in a day. Pretty good read too. Much darker than the previous ones. I was surprised at that.
I was happy that Harry and Cho didn't work out. I never liked Cho. She doesn't seem right for Harry. I'm all for some Harry/Ginny action in the next books. I was also saddened that Sirius bit the dust. I was appauled about how it was written tho. The death was written so horribly. I wish JKR wrote it better.
About Petunia's connection, Dumbledore clearly explained it as thus:
it is an old type of magic that his mother had died to save him. And because Petunia was his last living relative, it sealed a magical bond. That's why the only place that Harry is safe at is his home on Privet Drive.
Pay attention to these things. ^_^
Arrghh...I knew all that! lol I guess it just didn't make sense to me...and it still doesn't. :-/
I understand about the magic that his mother gave off when she sacrificed herself, whereas Voldemort could not touch Harry, but why couldn't he get at Harry at his aunt and uncle's house, even by sending someone else? o_O
Thanks. I didn't have the book with me and I wasn't sure of the right way to spell it. Of all the times for me not to have the book...

I'd reccomend reading it, of course. But near none of it will make sense if you haven't read the other 4... There aren't even any character introduction sentences... Rowling didn't give a brief history on any of the characters..
You would never know that Prefect Ron is an average student if you hadn't read the other books..
Well, I was always pro
Harry and Cho, ever since book 4, and I was very disappointed that it ended the way it did with them. I think when Harry told her off it was very uncalled for. *Growls at him* As for Harry and Ginny, I think that would be interesting. Even though she doesn't like him now, I think it would be fun for them to get together. ^_^

Yeah, it would be interesting... Though I'd love to see what Ron would do if Harry started going out with Ginny. >.>;

Anyway, I finished the book yesterday (after fourteen hours of reading xx), and absolutely loved it. It's my favorite book so far out of all the books I've read, even out of the whole Harry Potter series. I just couldn't put it down! Especially since Sirius was so much more involved in this book. I cried during those chapters where Sirius died and Harry kept thinking about him. Hopefully, he'll come back and speak to Harry or something in the sixth book, or even come back. Though, I'm pretty sure I'll start crying again.
Hey, that reminds me, and this fact REALLY irriated the SNOT out of me!
That mirror that Sirius gave Harry if he needed him, why didn't Harry look and see what it was when he gave it to him instead of putting it away in his chest and forgetting about it? If he had only realized he had that, he could have used it to contact Sirius instead of having to go through all that trouble of sneaking into Umbridge's office and using the Floo powder and talking to Kreacher (who lied to him) and figuring that Sirius was going to die. If Harry had used that stupid mirror, he would have known that Sirius was safe, they never would have had to run off to the Ministry of Magic, and Sirius would probably be alive. Stupid Harry!
Okay, I'm done with that rant, but I just HAD to get that out. It's the only thing that frustrated me as much as
Harry, Fred, and George getting kicked off the Quiddich team.
Yeah! That made me SO mad.
Especially if he had thought of that before, Sirius might not've died in the first place! --

But the thing that annoyed me more was each time Umbridge said 'hem hem'. Everytime I read those words, I kept feeling as if someone tossed a paperclip at the back of my head, or something...

The 5th book is 870 pages long, American Edition Hardback. I'm not surehow long the English edition is. Depends on where you live. Yes - I suggest that you re-read the first 3 books, just in case. There are some vital clues in there, I think...but it would be helpful just to re-read the first 3.

Um.. *looks at copy of 5th book* It's definetiely 766pages...

Also, I was
pro Harry/Cho during the book, but I'm glad it didn't work out...
I don't want Harry and Ginny.. Hmm.. I'm not sure who I want Harry to be with... Harry never really comments on the beauty of girls unless they're girls he can't have..... lol... I , of course, want Harry to have a girl that turns him on.... But he can't Have Hermione, that's Ron's job!

Well, that's probably the english version...the american edition is 870. I'm positive...lookin @ it right now.

Personally, I want Harry to end up w/ Hermione. Despite what everybody else thinks. I don't know who Ron should end up with...but i highly doubt that JKR is gonna put anybody together w/ anyone...it would be hard to describe their relationship when 7 year olds are reading this stuff...just look at how she described Harry/Cho's kiss. She didn't. So i think that nobody's going to "go steady" throughout the remaining 2 books.

I think that Harry should be with Luna Lovegood for 4 reasons:

1. You wouldn't suspect it, and J.K. rarely does things you would expect.

2. Her name is Luna Lovegood (emphasis on the love part). J.K. likes to put secret meanings in her names.

3. They can both see thestrals.

4. She believed Harry's story when a lot of others didn't.

:D I got the book Saturday lunch and finished it Sunday morning, which I will NOT try to repeat, cos my neck was killing me. :( I hated Umbridge, I had teachers like that in both High Schools I went to, argh! Plus I hate when people get pushed around, it really frustrates me. I sit tere thinking "Smack 'im ya fool!" But nooo, AHEM! Anyway...
I was gutted by
Sirius
dying. I didn't cry, but I did have this big hole kinda thing going on, he was possibly my favourite character... :( The mirror thing really frustrated me, I did this with GoF too, I sit here and think 'if only this happened...' or 'if somebady did that...'
As for Luna Lovegood, I think she's a great addition to the characters, I can imagine her now, She kinda reminded me of me... (All my tutors at College think I'm totally crazy.)
I don't want to see a Harry and Ginny, nononono,
but something was definitly hinted at between Harry and Luna at the end.
As for Ron and Hermione, I can live with that. In fact, I can see it happening, correct me if I'm wrong but at one point in the book
does Hermione not kiss Ron..?
Can't wait for Book Six... :D
