Shinmaru
Boy, this is a thread where Semjaza's idea of one gaming forum would come in handy. Me, I've always been a fan of the game that got less than their due. The games that were really good, but got overshadowed for various reasons (whether high profile games came out at the same time, it came out when a console was almost "dead," etc.) have always appealed to me. So, I decided to make this thread, seeing as I haven't seen one like this. For me, one of the most underrated games has always been Kirby Super Star. Kirby Super Star had nine extremely enjoyable (albeit short) games included on one cartridge. If that isn't a deal, I don't know what is. Both Revenge of the Meta Knight and Milky Way Wishes could easily have been stand alone Kirby games. I really enjoy this game a lot, and wish I had bought it when I had a chance (I saw it for $10 once at a game rental store...I'm still kicking myself). Too bad it came out at the end of the SNES' life cycle or it would have received a lot more attention.
Semjaza
That was a great game. I always wished I bought it, along with Kirby's Dream Course. I had so much fun when I rented both. I have a couple underrated games, both of which are on the NES. The first is Clash at Demonhead, which is my favorite NES game ever. You were basically a secret agent setting out to save the world yet again. It just was so insane. Crazy characters, weird monsters, magic, guns, jetpacks... It had everything. The other is Battle of Olympus, which was basically a Zelda II clone. The funny thing is that it's better than Zelda II in almost every aspect. Great, great game. Shinmaru
I've never heard of Clash at Demonhead, but it sounds pretty cool. I'll have to look it up somewhere. Battle of Olympus, however, I have heard of and it's a very good game. I played it once and it is much better than Zelda II. Although, I think that's just because I never really enjoyed Zelda II all that much.
GrimmFang
Clash at Demonhead and Battle of Olympus are still two of my favorite NES games I still play them today. I never really knew they where underrated till now. Glad to see someone else likes those two games as much as I do. Another underrated game at least in my opinion was Willow for the NES I thought it was a good action/adventure RPG for it's time some of the parts on that game where challenging. James
Hm, interesting question. I guess that the most underrated game I've played in recent times would be Rez. What an amazing game. Sure, it was short. Too short. But nevertheless, it was such a fantastic little game. It was critically acclaimed, though like many critically acclaimed games...that wasn't enough to save it in the sales department. Another would be Jet Set Radio. JSR is still one of my all-time favourite video games. It just has this atmosphere and aura about it...it's so addictive. I love it. In terms of older games...lemme think. The first that comes to mind is Goemon 5 for Nintendo 64. I think it was called "Legend of the Mystical Ninja" or something in the United States. In any case, it didn't sell. But that's a shame, because it was a truly good game. Some of the challenges were really quite unique. Goemon 5 is actually kind of like Mario 64 combined with Zelda. It's essentially a platformer, but with quite a few RPG elements involved. I can understand why it wasn't popular though. The story basically takes place in Feudal Japan, where a gang called the "Peach Mountain Dance Troupe" (who incidentally arrive in a flying Peach) try to overtake Japan with western culture. It's such a hilarious game though; the jokes are absolutely stupid (some of them don't translate too well), but whenever a joke is made...you actually hear the audience laugh. lol It's a quirky little title with lots of charm. It's a great deal of fun and I really recommend it to everyone who likes to try something new. ^_^
Dan Rugh
Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem -- great game, didn't sell like it should've. The sanity effects were ground-breaking. Chrystalis for the NES -- I'm not sure if this game was popular or not because I hadn't heard of it until I downloaded it for my emulator.
Semjaza
I loved Goemon on N64. The SNES and NES versions were awesome too. I actually preferred it to OoT, as odd as that sounds. I just thought it was more fun. I've always wanted to play the sequel for it, but I never got around to it. I don't know how popular Crystalis was. SNK made it way, way back. All I know is that I own it and love it, and everyone else I know does too. It was remade on the GBC, so it must have been fairly popular. The GBC version was changed too much though, it's not as good as the NES version.
hiachi
OMG I love the Mystical Ninja game, that was one of the biggest games (in explorable area, not popularity...:( ) on the N64, and it had plenty of japanese culture in it! It even had a conch that would summon a giant robot named...Impact i think, and Impact's themesong would play in the background and it was in japanese(my favorite language!) Also, I did play Crystalis, that was cool too, although when i played it, i was about 6-7 and didnt understand it much....hehe JSR/JGR, I didnt know it was underated...i thought a lot of people gave it credit, at least i do...for being one of the most stylish and creative games ever!!! James
Well, Goemon was just plain cool. Who can't love a giant robot who's number one goal is to become a famous TV star? ~_^ JSR is pretty appreciated amongst "hardcore gamers", I'd say (even though I don't like using that term). But generally, it didn't sell very well - even amongst other Dreamcast releases. And that's a huge shame. The same can definitely be said about Eternal Darkness. It's one of the most finely polished games I've ever seen and it certainly didn't receive due credit in terms of sales. Although, if games sold based on quality, Metroid Prime would have sold three million copies or more by now. o_O Another game that I feel was underrated was Street Racer on SNES. It was one of Ubi Soft's first games. And really, it was one of the most unique "kart racers" out there. In fact, it even beat Mario Kart at some things (it was very much a Mario Kart clone...but it was superior in some ways). The soccer mode was especially fun. You actually play soccer while you're in your vehicle...it's hard to explain, but it worked very well. It was especially fun in the two player mode. I'm not sure how popular the game was in the United States, but it wasn't terribly popular here. It was great fun though; one of my most rented games.
Char
maybe Sonic Mega Collection, many people say it is bad cause it has bad graphics *rolls eyes* or maybe Godzilla:Destroy All Monsters Melee
otakukev
I'm pretty sure Sonic Mega Collection could be one. I think the point behind the graphics is (duh!) to keep the games as they were o n the Sega Genesis; I have some of those games on Genesis and I know I think it would doing the games injustice to alter it. Goeman was also a great game, but only the people who tried it knew, and too many people just ignored it. It provided quite a challenge, too. At one point I was so frustrated because I kept doing the same part OVER and OVER and OVER for several hours that I accidentally broke the video/audio cable and my brother was really pissed at me. However, I still want to buy it if I ever see it somewhere. My personal opinion is that Kirby: The Crystal Shards was underrated. I only knew one person who ever bought it. I rented it and beat it after about three days, but it was really fun to find the shards and experiment with different enemy combos.
HammerBlade
I heard Contra: Shattered Soldier was supposed to be a really good game, but was really underrated because of how incredibly hard a great deal of the game was. Another game I think was underrated was Illusion of Gaia. (I dont have a link, look it up on google you lazy bum!) I really enjoyed the whole theme of this game. The music, the events, the...well, the combat system was almost exactly similar to the Zelda fight engine, except you didn't have a huge array of special weapons... And yeah, the Goemon (aka Mystical Ninja) is a great series of games (except "Goemons Great Adventure" for n64 that one was pretty bogus).
hiachi
Yes, Mystical Ninja was one of the first games i had for my SNES, and I loved it, it even had cool 2player story mode! with the sidescrolling/overhead areas both, it had some cool gameplay, as well as the upgrading of weapons, and its cool how it had such minigames as lottery and betting on horseracing...the only thing i disliked is no save option......:P
Shinmaru
I just thought of another good game: Power Stone 2 for the Dreamcast. Power Stone 2 was a very good Smash Bros. esque game that had some very good ideas. This was the game that included the intricately interactive levels that I really hoped (and luckily, they were) would be implemented in Super Smash Bros. Melee. If you've ever played this game, you know that some of the levels can get pretty intense. Whether you're running from a giant boulder, climbing up a waterfall, or trying to avoid lasers shot from cannons, the action never stops in these levels. The actual battles are very fun as well. Power Stone takes Smash Bros. weapons-based gameplay and bolsters it with about 50-60 odd different weapons that you can use. There aren't as many fighters in this game as there are in Smash Bros. Melee but the matches never really get too repetitive. Overall, if you still have a Dreamcast and you've never played this game (and you're bored with what's out right now), then this would be a very good pickup if you can find it. James
Guh. Power Stone is sublime. ^_^ I don't know if I ever played PS2...I only played the first. But geeze. It was wonderful. So much fun. That reminds me -- I saw a used version at a gaming store a few days ago. I must buy it. O_O
Shinmaru
I have the exact opposite problem. I've played Power Stone 2, but I never played Power Stone. PS2 is a really fun game and really deserves some credit for inspiring the insane interactivity of Smash Bros. Melee's levels. After all, PS2 did come out 2 or 3 years before Smash Bros. Melee. James
Ahh, I remember reading about PS2's levels (one of the levels is on a pirate ship or something isn't it?) and I always thought that it sounded like a lot of fun. The first Power Stone had some wonderful levels. One of them was a kind of restaurant...with chairs and tables and rafters to grab onto. lol It was so much fun. The level was like some kind of silly anime bar fight. o_O
Shinmaru
It's been a while since I've played Power Stone 2, but I remember most of the levels. That pirate ship level does exist and it's also the one with the crazy cannons firing lasers at you the entire level. I also liked the level with the Raiders of the Lost Ark boulder. It's always fun to trip people up and get them run over by the boulder lol. That restaurant level sounds pretty cool. Bar fights are always fun (er, in video games and movies, that is). Both Power Stones were really known for having some very inventive levels to fight in. It's a shame that a lot of people ignored them because it was on the Dreamcast. If I were Capcom, I'd try to revitalize the series and capitalize on the success of Smash Bros.

hiachi
I played the demo for PS2 on my Dreamcast a long time a go and loved it, especially the morphing thing when you get enough Power Stones...it really added to the multi-player fun!
juna
Hurmm... somethin' peeps haven't mentioned.... Maybe, Super Mario Brothers 2 (Nintendo), I'm counting it as under rated because it was my favorite, and many others' least. And, I don't know if this would be counted as under-rated, I just know I absolutly loved it, Star Fox for SNES. I used to have marathons with my brother playin that one...heh.
Shinmaru
I never really enjoyed the original Star Fox; there was just something about it that I didn't really like. I liked Star Fox 64 a lot more, but that's just me. I don't know if SMB 2 is underrated compared to most games, but it's certainly overshadowed by some of the more popular Mario titles, most likely because it was so different from the first Super Mario Bros. I've always enjoyed SMB 2, but it was my least favorite of the Super Mario Bros. games. Of course, that's not to say it's not good, because it's certainly a good game. One game that I think is underrated not so much by the hardcore gaming public, but by the mainstream gaming public at large is Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. You wouldn't believe the number of times that I've defended this game because of it's "kiddy look." There are many people I know who have never played this game and I simply don't see why; I think it's one of the greatest (if not the greatest) platformers of all time and the best looking game on the SNES - it's simply gorgeous. The only thing I hate about it is Baby Mario's incessant whining every time you drop him; I think that would instigate more video game violence than games like Doom and Grand Theft Auto ever could lol. Kristoff119
Mission impossible for the 64 is very underrated in my opinion. I mean, it's a great fps for only having single player game, and much better than goldeneye.
Semjaza
I thought MI was 3rd person? Some other games I was thinking of and meaning to post in here... Kirby's Dream Course. It was originally called Tee-Off or some crap, but they stuck Kirby in and renamed it. They made great use of the license, I think. You use his powers to help get him into holes of minature golf. Star Tropics is another one. The series just completely dropped off after the sequel. They were both really excellent games, and I'd love to see a GBA version.
