Sniglefager
Even though a lot of people have already mentioned it, Mystical Ninja is my favorite N64 game besides Mario 64. I remember I watched my friend play it at his house and watching him play the flute and riding the dragon, and thinking "Wow, this is a really cool game." Then when I was at a garage sale, I saw it for $1.50, and I grabbed it right away. I still havn't beaten it though, because I never got the save pak thing-a-ma-jiger. Charles
Hoo boy, the original Clocktower was underrated. It had to sell well enough because there's three of them, but I don't think it's held in the highest regard at all. To this day, it remains one of my favorite survival horror experiences. It's such a shame that the sequels haven't been able to live up to the original. If you look at it on paper, Clocktower was a recipe for disaster. Basically, a cluster of elements that make a bad game. It was a point-and-click, the graphics were thoroughly unimpressive, the acting was cheesy, and your nemesis was a midget limping around with a giant pair of scissors. But, as eccentric as the game was, I enjoyed it very much. It's traditional, in the sense that you are a helpless character simply trying to get the hell out of a bad situation. There are no fancy acrobatics in your arsenal and you aren't equipped with weapons. Instead, you're stuck in a building with a madman who could show up at any time. Your options are limited: run, hide, slow him down by grabbing anything in your reach, or try to shove him out of the way and run some more. lol It can be super tense when you hide underneath a couch and see Scissorman's feet shuffling beside you. You don't know whether you're safe or if he's going to plunge the scissors through the sofa and impale you. The B-movie feeling is prominent and it's very fun. Best of all, the point-and-click interface isn't really a hindrance at all. The game is so responsive and intuitive that you forget about it after a while. It's not the clumsy mess it could have been. The game becomes kind of like an extension of yourself--and that's when you know what you're playing is good. Before I was done with the game, I uncovered every ending. Usually I'm not motivated to uncover multiple endings, but the various scenarios were entertaining and sometimes humorous. There Super Famicom original is quite good too. It's probably better than Clock Tower 2 for the PSX. Perhaps I'll try the third one someday down the road. Guest Tidal
A greatunderrated game is Operation WinBack for the n64. I loved that game. I couldn't find it for the n64 and I got the remake for the ps2 a few months ago. man I think they should make a 2nd one
roymund
I loved a whole bunch of undrated games. Lets start with the virtually unkonown "Mario is missing" for the SNES. Came out like 6 weeks before N64. It's a luigi only game like mario RPG, only its just luigi. And for the PC, the GREATEST game EVER is "The Summoning" It had no sound but cheesy repetive background music and the interface was lacking, but the storyline was as deep as any Elaine Cunningham or R.A. Salvatore book around. If you read these writers go online and download this game NOW!
ZetaGundam1
Recently, the MegaMan Battle Network (and the GCN game, Network Transmission) are most definatley underated and most definatly worthy of higher praise. It's actually a nice spin on the Megaman universe. And yes, the first Goemon game for N64 was sheer brillance, what with the awesome Mech fighting sequences and all, it was truly worthy higher praises. And finally, I bring to light Lawnmower Man for the SNES it was a fast paced, fun game that most people hate.
I, Colossus
I know this is quite old, but I recently played a game that definately deserves to be on this list. Have you ever heard of Denki Blocks? I didn't think so. It's an awesome puzzle game for the GBA, that I now plan on buying (once I get a GBASP/Gameboy Player). It's by far the best puzzle game I've ever played, look past the cartoony style, and the sheer odd-ness of this title and you will find an amazing game. The actual structure of the game is quite strange, however once you start playing you'll want more and more. My friend downloaded it for the VisualBoyAdvanced (GBA Emu) and we played for hours. You'd be suprised at how difficult some of the puzzles are and how much joy you'll have while playing. :D Definately the most underrated puzzle game of all time.
James
Yes, Majesco sent me a copy of Denki Blocks for review a while ago. Wonderful little game. I don't even play puzzle games much...but Denki Blocks is highly addictive and cleverly designed. I also liked the "adventure game" atmosphere of it. It's really a wonderful title. I found it a lot more fun than Tetris. :D
Shinmaru
A lot of people like to take enjoyment in not playing puzzle games because of cartoony looks or something. Sad, really. I've had some really great times with puzzle games. Tetris Attack/Panel de Pon, Tetris, Mr. Driller, Bust a Move, etc. With that said, I must now track down a copy of Denki Blocks and play it. Thank you, Shroom.
Pagan
Games based on movies are always underrated. Especially Disney movies. I enjoyed Bugs Life on PS1 and Alladin on Super Nintendo. Enter The Matrix and the Lord of the Ring Series are the first moive games to be taken seriously. Its hard to admit though, but yes most of them do suck. Alien vs. Predator is the worst of them all. I, Colossus
Another game I thought of that is quite underrated is Dead to Rights. I admit it wasn?t horribly bashed or anything, but because of DTR?s similar feel to Max Payne it was dubbed a clone by many people. All of this people, however, missed out on an amazing game. It took the good things about Max Payne and expanded upon them ten fold. Several dis-arms, guns, mini-games, and features make this game extremely fun. Though I admit for most people it?s one of those games you play through, love, and then never touch again. But I still think that equal credit should be given, when it?s due.
Shinmaru
*looks fondly at his copy of Einhander* Being the big shooter geek that I am, I think that Einhander is supremely underrated. Not so much in the reviews department, because it was critically acclaimed...however, to my knowledge, at least, the game did not sell very well. That always did baffle me, as I've enjoyed this game a lot; so much, that I would definitely say that it's one of the best shooters of all time. The 2D/3D scale of the graphics looks fantastic and all the different upgrades that you can get through the course of the game are very cool. And the boss battles...amazing. Boss battles are the reason I love shooters because many of the coolest, toughest boss battles I've fought came from shooters. Einhander has some of the best, in my opinion. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a shooter to play.
Guest Teammayhem
Oy... Power Stone... That game was sooo underrated... Been soo long now. I really think a lot of games on the Dreamcast were underrated. A lot of them were ports, i know that, but there were some really good games here and there. But i digress. My favorite most underrated game on nintendo consoles would be Eternal Darkness. That game tripped me ooout...
Morpheus
Sega smash pack. It had Streets of rage 2, golden axe, Sega swirl, return of shinobi, Sonic, altered beast, columns, virtua cop 2, Wrestle war, phantasy star 2, shining force, and vectorman on one GDROM. Worth buying a DC at launch price for.
Shinmaru
Eh, I never really heard many good things about the Sega Smash Pack. Most of the stuff I've read about Sega Smash Pack said that the games were poorly emulated, especially Sonic (lots of slowdown), Golden Axe and Altered Beast. There are some good games on the disc, but if not ported properly, they don't amount to much.
eleanor
Recently, I just think Windwaker is being underestimated. I played a bit of it and enjoyed it, but everyone I talk to insist that it's not a good game. Hm. *looks around* Maybe it's because some fans are still angry about the art style change, heh.
Guest Teammayhem
I'm a great fan of Zelda, and I'm willing to try anything new, really. Windwaker was underrated. Supposedly (according to rumors) there's a direct sequel to Windwaker coming out... I don't care about the style (or the graphics), just gimme a game that's fun. The best on the GameCube in my opinion. Some of the dungeons are just incredible looking and have to be seen to be believed. The bosses are amazing looking, as well. I don't mind that Wind Waker was cel-shaded, anyway. The look fits the series.
Lightning Baron
Originally posted by Shinmaru I just thought of another good game: Power Stone 2 for the Dreamcast. Power Stone 2 was a very good Smash Bros. esque game that had some very good ideas. This was the game that included the intricately interactive levels that I really hoped (and luckily, they were) would be implemented in Super Smash Bros. Melee. If you've ever played this game, you know that some of the levels can get pretty intense. Whether you're running from a giant boulder, climbing up a waterfall, or trying to avoid lasers shot from cannons, the action never stops in these levels. The actual battles are very fun as well. Power Stone takes Smash Bros. weapons-based gameplay and bolsters it with about 50-60 odd different weapons that you can use. There aren't as many fighters in this game as there are in Smash Bros. Melee but the matches never really get too repetitive. Overall, if you still have a Dreamcast and you've never played this game (and you're bored with what's out right now), then this would be a very good pickup if you can find it.
Power Stone has it all. There's fast paced action, an RPG element with collecting and mixing items and there is the deep strategy involved with how you fight, what weapons you use, etc... I was a master at that game :D But sadly Dreamcast died away :flaming: and I was quite angry :demon: Many games I bought, great games (Jet Set Radio, Skies of Arcadia, Power Stone and the ultimate games IMO Shenmue and it's sequel) were traded in for a gamecube. It's great but it doesn't emulate the quality of Dreamcast if you ask me :worried:
Guest Heezay
The game Paper Mario for the N64 was very much underrated. Dont be fooled by the paper characters, cuz the environments were STUNNING. VERY MUCH AMAZING. The plot was cool, the bosses were great, and the graphics were among the best I have seen on the N64. Sure everyone is flat, but don't be fooled. The game is set up like a play on a stage, with buildings opening up when you step inside them. The characters are quirky and hilarious. The bosses are tough. The soundtrack fits perfectly, especially during the fights against bosses imprisoning the Star Spirits. Play this game, and you will definitely remeber it. Shinmaru
I never really thought of Super Mario RPG as really being underrated...from what I've seen, the game has always gotten the praise that it deserves both critically and from gamers. But, I suppose you may live in a different gaming environment than me, heh...for all I know there could be people bashing Super Mario RPG left and right where you live lol.
