Writing Ultimates (Pseudo-Official Comics in General Thread!)

[b]Ultimates #11:[/b] This issue dealt with the most explosition that I have ever seen, and it just seems like a slow build-up to whatever will happen in issue 12. Wasp spends a lot of time sitting down and listening to the bad guy, and it all just seems like an old James Bond movie. [spoiler]The Skrull would have been better off eating Wasp and stealing her identity. It would be a shame to see her go, but it would have been a great plot twist. I was hoping that Ultimates was a little more daring then to save her at the last minute, oh well.[/spoiler]

This is a comic book, so there is obviously some suspension of disbelief, but [spoiler]Thor teleporting 20,000 soldiers away from a nuclear explosion[/spoiler] is just ridiculous. I know [spoiler]Thor[/spoiler] is one of the most powerful characters in the Marvel Universe, but [i]c'mon![/i] No, I didn't expect anyone to die from last issue's "cliffhanger", but the way the problem was resolved was poorly handled.

Aside from those complaints, the dialogue is sharp, and the artwork is on par with that of the previous issues. I'd like to see more development with Bruce Banner, and the return of Giant-Man, but the plot seems a little too crowded at this point. Once this alien invasion is over I hope the book stays grounded in reality. If nothing else, the next issue will have a lot of violence. Yay for violence.

[b]Fantastic Four #501:[/b] Sadly, I missed issue 500 because it was sold out, as many FF issues have been lately. There is a good reason for this; FF is a great example of how to make classic characters fresh and interesting again. This issue mostly dealt the with the aftermath of Doctor Doom's latest attack against the group, and it took many of the characters to a really dark place. I'm not used to seeing Marvel's first family at a psychiatrists office, or [spoiler]contemplating murder[/spoiler] but somehow it fits. They really are a family, and I think that a lot of people can relate to this story in some way or another. This isn't about a super-villain's attack, it is about a family going through a crisis and needing one another for support. I highly recommend this issue if you even remotely care about these characters, because this is shaping up to be an event that will effect their lives for years to come.

[b]Catwoman #21:[/b] I've never read a Catwoman comic before this issue, and now I really feel like I have been missing out on something special. This issue unites Catwoman with Captain Cold, who is a mediocre villain on Flash (although I hear he has been reinvented into something pretty interesting there.) The two villains team up for a robbery in Keystone City, home of the Flash, and it's mostly a fun adventure with two unlikely partners.

I loved the first conversation between Selina and Lenny, it feels really natural, even though they are mentioning ridiculous names like "Catwoman," "Captain Cold," and "The Trickster." Apparently they met in New York at some point, which I found really funny. The DC Universe has a pretty limited cast of interesting characters, so everyone has met [i]everyone[/i] at some point in the past 50 years.

The artwork is good, though it isn't nearly as good at what might be found in Batman or Ultimates. It reminds me of X-Statix, except there is more attention to detail and realism. The facial expressions are excellent, and ones in the [spoiler]Museum theft are hillarious. Captain Cold giving the thumbs up is classic.[/spoiler] The dilaogue is good as well. In fact, there isn't really anything to complain about in this. I'm going to start buying some back issues of Catwoman; if they are all this good then I'm going to be very satisfied.

I'm really looking forward to the release of [b]Batman/Superman #1[/b] tomorrow, and [b]1602[/b] next week. Both of these look like they are going to be promising, so I'm excited about those.

I've still not read Ultimates #10 or #11. I finally got #7 the other day. I'm not going to read them until I get #8 and #9 so I can get the whole story.

I've been hearing good things about Catwoman. Funny that you mention Flash, because from what I understand... the current issues are supposedly amazingly good.

I've been massively turned off by the most recent Ultimate X-Men issues, so I've been advised to get New X-Men. It's at #144 now I think, but the current arc starts at #142. I'm hoping to grab them today. Apparently at WizardWorld Chicago this weekend, Marvel will be announcing that New X-Men will relaunch as simply X-Men. The current writer won't be involved after New X-Men #154 though, so I don't know what is going on.

Otherwise, I have a few other things I want to get. Specifically, Supreme Power #1, which looks excellent. Sentinel #5 is my other must-have. I'm also looking for something called Quicken something-or-other... but I've yet to see it around.

These things are like a form of crack, I swear.

I just read the full version of Marvel Comics Spirederman, and I must say that I was kind of dissapointed. I thought that the art would be much much better, although it wasn't. It was kind of low quality, and sort of just a lot of short little boxed drawings. Though when I read older comics, such as Dreadstar I think to myself, this is nnot just a comic, it's a comic that is a work of art.

I just finally got finished reading my Shonen Jump issue, but that's Japanese. Anyway, I must say that the first time I looked at manga, I wanted to pick it up so bad. So I did, I never got back into American comics. Now I look a this thread and I am now back into American comics. I like that.

Right now I am reading the Team 7 series, and I also just finished the Batman series but that isn't marvel. Anyway, so far I am addicted to Team 7. It is probably one of the best comics I have picked up yet. I haven't picked up the ultimates yet but I look foward to doing so. I hope I can read it and enjoy the series.

From what you guys are telling me it sounds like The Ultimates is a pretty good comic, so I might as well go pick it up. When I get done reading it I will tell you what I think.

I'm not sure what you mean by "full version". What Spider-Man series are you reading? There are a few runs... Ultimate Spider-Man, Spectacular Spider-Man, and so on.

I went insane today. I've bought quite a few comics in the past week and a half... but most of them were bought today. I think I walked out with a dozen.

I didn't wind up having Jim Lee sign my Batman. There was a line to the other end of the block at like 11:45. He wasn't supposed to sign until 2 PM. Screw that. He was just sitting in there talking to the other guy signing (forget who, I think Quesada), looking at comics. Seemed like a nice guy. He even had an Atari shirt on. I wanted to just be like "Sign my Batman, please." and get ahead of all those others.

They seemed impressed by my Marvel luncbox at least.

Wednesday is busy for obvious reasons. New comics! Like I said, I bought quite a few. Notably Supreme Power #1 and Batman/Superman #1 were out today. I grabbed both the standard and special editions of Supreme Power and both covers of Batman/Superman. I also grabbed Inhumans #3, Batman #617, New X-Men #143 and #144, Catwoman #20 and #21 and Sentinel #5. Over the past week I got Ultimates # 7 and #11, X-Statix #11 Outsiders #2, Inhumans #2 and Batman #616.

So I'm happy. I'll probably write a bit more on this all later.

Well I think it's called Ultimate Spider man volume 1. I'll have to check when I get home, but that's what I think it is.

Today I finished the Team 7 series, it wasn't good at all. I got bored easily, image comics aren't that good of creators in my opinion. I just don't think that they are. I hated the He-man comics, and I didn't like the Team 7.

Now I am gonna try to read the Dreadstar series If I can find any more comics from them.

Ultimate Spider-Man Volume 1 is only like the first six issues or so. They're already on #44 or something like that. Spider-Man isn't my thing though, so I can't say much about it. Deathbug is a fan, obviously.

Heh, well it's a pretty thick book. I can get a picture of it if you would like, but yeah, it's pretty big. Though I just didn't think it was any good, at all, I am not a fan.

I just got done reading Dreadstar and must say that it's one of the best comics ever. The Drawings look like manga drawings but with color. And the lines are so smooth. It's such a good classic, I recomend you guys to read it. I'm pretty sure this one was made by epic comics marvel, I think.

[b]Sentinel #5[/b] - Yes. This comic is aimed at younger teens. Who cares, it's done so damn well that I enjoy it anyway.

Another great issue, although I don't think it's quite up there with #4. More character development, and surprisingly little focus on the Sentinel. Has one of those endings that makes you want to rip your hair out because you don't want to wait another month to find out what happens next. REALLY annoying lol.

I really like this series. It has a slight manga edge to it, and a bit of drama... but it's just fun. I don't really think it picked up until #3, but since then it has been great.

[b]Batman/Superman #1[/b] - Pretty good. I feel mixed at this point in time. The play on Superman and Batman's similiarities and differences is well done. They also have a pretty good chemistry together, so I feel the dialogue was well done.

The only real negative part of it for me was [spoiler]Metallo. The guy just has almost nothing of interest going on for me, at least at this point in time. It seems like he could be very interesting in the future, but where they went with him this time didn't do much for me just yet.[/spoiler].

The last page is pretty cool though, because some rather unexpected people make an appearance.

[b]Supreme Power #1[/b] - Buy this. In case you didn't know, it's about Squadron Supreme. The most impressive comic I've personally read since the Ultimates.

Excellent writing, excellent art, good pacing, good dialogue. It seems to do everything right. It has one of those explicit content advisories on it. From what I can tell, it's most likely going to get incredibly violent at times. There is a really obvious sex scene in it, as well as a rather surprising random act of violence. Cool stuff heh.

Seriously. Buy this. I wouldn't bother with the Special Edition, but the comic itself rocks. Hyperion is going to be an awesome character.

I just watched a couple episodes of the Spiderman on MTV. I must say it is nothing like any other Spider man thing. Hairy has blonde hair, mistook him for flash. I just couldn't watch it. Though that is a show. Darnet. Oh well.

Anyway, I started trying to find X-Statix. I'm looking at the comic store, then at the big huge book store in town. I'm hoping it will be good.

I also just read a X-Men comic. I must say it is very well done. The picture quality, and the art is one of the best I've seen. Next to Dreadstar one of my favorite comics. I must say that this X-Men was pretty good.

I just got threw reading Iron man. I thought it was really good, though I know a lot of people who don't like him. It could be better, the plot is not really what I was looking for. I must say that the art is a very very good one. Not the best. And the font kind of annoyed me.

All in all Iron Man is not one of my favorites. If I were to rate it I would give it a 5/10. I kind of like it I kind of don't. I know people who love it, and I know people who don't. *sigh*

Which X-Men line did you buy? Uncanny currently sucks, and I can't say I'm impressed with Ultimate X-Men anymore (although it is far better).

X-Statix is going to be hard to get into. Even when I finally got to read the first issue, it's hard to get into. It makes a lot of references to the X-Force, and expects you to basically already know the characters. Shy tells me you can get a paperback of the last X-Force issues though.

Okay, I went to Borders for my weekly comics and coffee fix. I read a bunch of comics that have already been reviewed (unfortunatly, Borders is slow with updating there shelves...I need to find a local comic book shop) however, there are two series that I'll breifly write about.

First is Fantastic Four. I have always hated FF, I don't remember it ever being interesting or well drawn, its only redeeming aspect was Dr. Doom...until now. The last ten issues or so of FF have been fantastic, and the art is also quite well done. I definatly recommend picking up issue 501...it is a really good starting point.

The other series I wanted to talk about has actually been completed for sometime. Sandman is one of the most spectacular and innovative comics ever created. Over the last month I have poured through the ten trade paperbacks that make up this series and I was blown away by the plot. Not that I expected anything less from Neil Gaiman, who is the author of some incredible books like American Gods and Good Omens. If you are unfamiliar with this series, definatly check it out.[/color]

Okay I just went into to town to get some comics, though they closed down the comic store, and I have no clue when it's opening again, so, I went to the Video Rental store. Some kind of superhero comic caught my eye.

I picked it up and started to read it. I think it was buy image comics or somethin, I cannot remember the name but the plot was about some kid that was filled with like super powers. he was just a normal kid when he got kidnapped and then someone gave him these powers.

Though that person controlled his mind. The person was obviously evil, he controlled him, and the kid started destroying his town. So far I only read that much, because I saw they had Chaos Legion, XD. Anyway it was a very detailed comic. One of the most detailed I have ever read.

When the people talked inside the bubbles you could tell they were going to be long. They all were because it was very detailed. As was the clothing. The clothing had millions of clothes and it looked like a 3D animated comic. I plan on going back to look at it and give you the name. And I think it is the best image comic.

I plan on going to look to see if the comic book store is open soon, so umm.. in the words of the running Govenar of California, Arnold Swat (ah heck) I'll be back.[/font][/color]

For those that don't know it basically takes current Marvel characters and sticks them into roles in the 1600s. Looks very cool. It's $3.50 though, so I'm hoping it's a decent size.

Otherwise I guess I can try to grab Fallen Angel #2 and see how that is.

[size=1][b]Fantastic Four #502[/b] is out tomorrow (Tuesday) as well, so it seems like it will be a decent comics week for me. Ultimate X-Men #36 is being released too, but I think I'm going to protest the last issue by not buying this one. The few reviews of it I read have all been very positive, so I've come to the conclusion that most people who read comic books [i]only[/i] read comic books. This gives me more motivation to make my own comic book site, which will be the greatest thing ever.

[b]1602[/b] seems pretty interesting, but the huge ammount of hype is starting to annoy me. There isn't anything very new and clever being presented in the comic, it's basically just a fun "What If?" story with some good artwork.

Is anyone else excited about the Alex Ross/Paul Dini JLA comic in September? I think Alex Ross is an amazing artist, and Paul Dini is responsible for the awesome DC Comic cartoons that have been on television for the past decade or so. Here is an example of Alex Ross' artwork:

That looks pretty sweet... but I've not heard many good things about JLA's writing lately. I don't know if it'd be worth getting or not, but I don't know who the writers are in general, or if they'll be changed by that issue.

I'm going to skip 1602 and just get it in paperback. It doesn't seem worth getting each issue of a miniseries at this point in time.

I might pick up Teen Titans #2, just to see how it is.

[size=1]It's actually a one-shot comic, so you don't have to worry about the creative team changing before it's released. This is completely different than the main series.

I was planning on picking up 1602 last Wednesday, but I made the mistake of going to the comic store on Tuesday. ^__^

But I got a few good comics anyway, Sentinel #1, G.I. Joe #13, X-Statix #11, and The Amazing Spiderman #49. I'm not sure why I picked up the particular issues, aside from the good things I've read about Sentinel and X-Statix. Anyway, I enjoyed them all well enough, but Sentinel is the only one I want to follow.

Well did you read like... what? One issue of X-Statix? lol

You're not really going to have any attachment to the characters at all unless you start from the beginning. That's really all this book is -- character development.

Even when you start from the first issue, you really have to go back and read the last parts of X-Force as well. I wound up buying that the other day and it helps out greatly.

In any case, you can't just jump into it randomly like with many other comics. Especially #11 which is already well into the swing of things.

I'm sure many people still won't like it after all that, but in your case (unless you've read far more of them than you make it seem here) I think the decision is a bit premature.

At the same time there are so many other comics to get, so no big deal lol.

One issue is enough to tell if I'll enjoy the book or not. If the main reason you buy the book is character development, then that is great for you. I never said it was bad, I said it was something that I wouldn't enjoy. Even if it was just one issue, I can easily tell if it's something I want to follow, while it was a good book, the story and pretty much everything isn't something I want to spend 3 bucks on.

It isn't the [i]type[/i] of book I want.

Went to the comic store and got three new issues: Spider-Girl #63 and Spectacular Spider-Man #2 & 3.

Spider-Girl #63: This issue, somebody dies! Agh! Too bad we don't know who...double agh! Actually, we have an idea. It's either Normie Osborn, who was gunned down by a mysterious assassain last ish, or the Kingpin of crime, who took a turn for the worst after an attempt on his life left him hospitalized two issues ago.

And where is Mayday in all of this? On the roof of the hospital, fighting off the mercenary Kaine and the teleporting assassain Mr. Nobody. One of those two is lying and knows who tried to kill Normie, but they both book after a while.

Oh, and did I mention that a huge gang war is about to take place? Whew.

This is part three of the "Marked For Death" storyline, and it hasn't gone off-course like Season of the Serpant did a few months ago. (In all fairness, SotS had a killer ending.) One could argue that the near-death hallucinations Normie & the Kingpin had were filler, but they were well-done filler; new readers would appreciate being let in on what drives these two.

Best scene: The end of the Kingpin's hallucination, when his dead son accuses him of being a murdering ruthless SOB. Kingpin's basic response: "Yeah, so?"

Big revelation: [spoiler]In his hallucination, the ghost of the first Norman Osborn says that Normie has [i]fallen in love[/i] with May.[/spoiler]


Spectacular Spider-Man #2 & 3: Whole lotta' Venom goin' on, folks. Spider-Man looses him in the subway, then starts invesitigating to find clues to his whereabouts. (Turns out the Venom that Spidey fought in the subway was just the alien; Eddie Brock has left the building.)

Meanwhile, Peter follows Aunt May's advice and offers to take care of Flash Tomphson, still a vegitable after the Green Goblin's attack weeks earlier. Eddie Brock, however, isn't doing so well himself: hes dying of cancer, and the alien cann't get any adrenaline from him anymore. The symbiote is reduced to almost killing Eddie in order to get enough adrenaline from him.

With some help from New York's finest, Pete flushes Venom (both halves of him) out into the open, and easily defeates him...too easily. As the brain-fried Brock tries to tell Spidey, this was all part of the alien's trap.

Best part: Brock on his own. The alien's turned to abusing him, and it's having an adverse effect on his mind. Brock, who was always a very well-spoken adversary, (he used to be a journalist, remember), is reduced to the grammer of a street-punk without the alien.

Big revelation: [spoiler] Turns out the alien never liked settling for Brock at all. It's Spider-Man he always wanted as his host. At the end of ish #3, the alien ditches Brock and goes "home".[/spoiler]

Anywho...good comic week. :)

I still have yet to read my New X-Men issues. I read everything else.

I finally found that Sentinel #1 and #2/Runaways #1 and #2 mixed book again. I went back to the same Borders, and there it was. Not in the greatest condition, but I just wanted to get it so I had the full story. It's quite a bit better than I remember... I didn't like either of those series at first.

I'd love to get the real issues though... Especially Runaways. I really like the painted covers they do for them.

Shy told me to try out 100 Bullets because of my interest in oldschool crime comic covers. I've wanted to buy this for quite some time, but always stopped myself. I see a paperback is coming out this coming Wednesday though, so I'll probably grab it.

There's something from DC coming out called Human Target too. First issue. I have no idea what it is, but I might as well check it out at the store. Otherwise, just Runaways #5 for me.

Heh...when I was nine I got every comic with Spider-Man in it...then I wondered why I never had any money...

However, I buy selectivly nowadays. I've eschewed "Tangled WEb", the Tsunami "Venom" title, and all the limited seies. Basically, I follow the two core books, (Spec. and Amaz.), plus Spider-Girl.

(Spider-Girl is cool. Old skool, people. :) )

Anyway, I like Spectacular. I'm nuetral on the art, but I'm a huge fan of Paul Jenkin's writing. (His Green Goblin story was fantastic.) Also, I like Venom, and I like what PJ's doing with him.

Despite the hype, I believe Spectacular is superior to Amazing right now. I buy Amazing in paperback form, which is why you don't see me ranting about it.
Jenkin's charicterization of Peter is more accurtate than JMS's, and he doesn't constantly make continunity gaffs. Plus, he actually uses good spidey villians, istead of making up mediocre ones like JMS does.

Cool, cool. I'll have to look into some of it. Spider-Girl sounds most interesting to me. Do you know how Venom is? I've seen that a few times as well.

I thought this week would be a boring comic day. Last week sure was, at least for me. It turned out that I found six comics I wanted, so I was happy.

I of course picked up Runaways #5. I freaking love this series. Another great issue in every respect... action, surprises, character development. I was really looking foward to it and read the entire thing on the L (that's our electric train system here).

I love the painted cover art they use. Every cover has been great.

I was just going to walk out of there with that and the last issue of 100 Bullets... but then I saw it. A new issue of Outsiders!!! I didn't even know it was coming this week. I didn't see it on the shipping lists.

I love this comic. I read it on the L as well, and the entire thing was just great. The whole ape storyline was rather stupid at first in #2 (I've yet to read the first issue that I assume explains it), but it tied together rather nicely in #3. More appearances by big name characters too. Great art (some complaints, but they're minor), great writing. I really like it.

I only have one real gripe with it... The lettering. It just seems so damn sloppy. It randomly changes sizes and just doesn't look nice. Indigo's text is computer type, so that works fine. Everyone else's seems odd.

I also saw a comic that caught my attention. It's called Possession. Seems to be about exorcisms and such with a superhero style vigilante twist. Issue #2 came out this week... but they also had #1. I bought both. I wasn't happy that they cost $2.99 apiece though.

I just skimmed through them so far. Writing seems solid, and the art is very good. It's very outline heavy and makes use of a lot of crosshatching. Fits the comic's style.

Still have yet to read the two 100 Bullets issues I bought.

And Shy... they have about 15 copies of Ultimates #1. I have no idea if it was reprinted or what, but there are lots there. The also had a couple copies of #4, but I didn't bother to get it. I'm still looking for #8 and #9. If you still want #1, let me know.

I read the first two issues of Venom, then dropped it. It's not that I didn't enjoy the story; in it, Venom is portayed as a kind of movie monster, mysterious, evil and powerful.

The problem with Venom, (not counting the art; some like it, some hate it. Again, on the fence.), is that it moves too slowly. After each issue, I like what I've read, but I'm saying, "That's it?'

You know how slow Ultimate Spider-Man goes? Put that on slo-mo, and you've got Venom.

I plan to buy the trade paperback, so I can read the story in one setting. I do the same for USM, so it's all good.

...I can't wait for the first wave of Tsunami paperbacks....:)

Oh, and I whole-heatedly recommend Spider-Girl. It reads like a comic from the eighties....probably because most of the creators on it were writing back then. It's very old skool, as I said before.
