Nayme
Okay, what is Samuri Jack, actually? Just a really pretty cartoon? 'Cause it's not on Adult Swim. Or even Toonami. But I like it. I think it's pretty, and interesting. Am I the ony one out there? The only one with this certain case of guilty pleasure? And if you don't share mine, do you have a show that's your guilty pleasure? Dan Rugh
Samurai Jack is made in America and yes, I like it too. Guilty pleasure on TV -- that damn Trading Spaces show. I can't believe that I can actually watch a whole episode of it and not get angry at my mom or sister. This thread will probably get moved to the Music, Movie, & TV forum since we're aren't necessarily talking about anime.
Manic Webb
Samurai Jack was created by the creator of Dexter's Lab, Gendy Tartakovsky. It was made by an American, written in America, and animated in Korea. The only thing Japanese about the show (aside from the character "Jack" being the Emperor's son) is the voice actor who plays Aku. The show does have quite a few anime elements. Tartakovsky is a big anime fan, and really likes to throw in a few tributes to his favorite anime every now and then (pay attention the next time you see Dexter pull out one of his giant robots). He says that he made Samurai Jack to satisfy his need to make an action cartoon with more action than any of his past shows. While he does admit that anime has a strong influence on Samurai Jack, I don't think I've ever heard him call the show an actual "anime." So, no. I don't think Samurai Jack is an anime. It's a pretty good show, though.
Spikey
Samurai Jack does look like an anime. I knew I saw a Japanese name in the credits Manic. heh I like it, it's okay. Though the only problem is that when Jack is in a battle his hair gets longer. lol. Thats funny P.S.Oh and if you look closely on the credits of Scooby-Doo you'll find a Japanese name. heh
Nayme
I wasn't aware of any of that, though I suspected it was an American cartoon, born and raised because it wasn't in any special block. So glad ya'll know these things! ^.^ I love to be informed. I wonder if there are any other cartoons like that. Points: -I actually used to watch Dexter, too. Until he started getting on my nerves. -Scooby-Doo has always been cute. -I've peeked at Trading Spaces, and I never told anyone that I had to finish the episode that I came in on because it was---interesting. -And it's cool when his hair gets longer! Long hair good. Goood. ::gets a vacant look::

Ayokano
When his hair gets longer someone cut of his pony tail thingy...that's right... I like it.The animetion is somthing very new(I think)and it has a OK story. The only thing that anoys me about it is that every thing that gets cut in half is a robot.
Manic Webb
Yeah, the robot thing is kind of annoying. Even mutants that don't even come off as robotic suddenly spew oil the moment Jack cuts them. I've always admired the animation of this show. The usage of wide-screen and narrow-screen on certain shots, the way none of the character designs use black outlines (every other Cartoon Cartoon uses really thick black outlines). I heard that the written scripts of the show are incredibly short, because in some episodes nobody even says anything. I think it's primarily story-boarded, as opposed to scripted. I've been hanging around way too many animation experts...
OtakuSennen
Yeah, Samurai Jack is American. Throughout the series you'll see hints at its Japanese culture base though... For example, in that ep with the haunted house thingie they talked about how the tea was from Edo, (Tokyo's original name) and Jack said he was familiar with Edo. It's fun to watch (sometimes.. Earlier in the series when there was no dialogue it bored me to tears). But no, I wouldn't consider it a guilty pleasure. It's not like I'm married to anime and have to stay loyal to it.. WW2
Samurai Jack is a pretty good anime spoof, with a few neat ideas, such as the Scotsman with the machine gun leg. But I have a big problem with the enemies all being robots of some type.:flaming:
BlackDragon465
Samurai Jack is a good show in my opinion. I am a fan of cartoons and shows with swords. Ruruoni Kenshin is one of my favorites. I love seeing swords battles and that kind of stuff. :demon:
Ryo the Tamer
Whenever oil spews out just imagine that it is blood. So it is made by Gendy Tartakovsky? I remember I used to watch Dexter's Lab, the new ones (where dexter is 1 inch tall) aren't any good, the art, voices, and almost everyone's personality has changed. I would watch Samuri Jack but the cable people got rid of Cartoon Network.
Nayme
Points: -Oil spewing blood...can easily be gotten used to. -Robot villains aren't so horrible. Too many of them aren't so fun, though. -Evee is a good thing. -Scotsmen with machine legs and cool voices = happy Nayme. -Swords = very happy Nayme. Semjaza
They made most of the enemies robots for a reason. If you saw the hour long premeire, Tartakovsky explains why afterwards. I don't really remember the reasoning at this point, but there is no way in hell they would be able to get away with some of the levels of violence in the show if the bad guys he sliced in half were actually representatiosn of living creatures. Robots, no one cares about, I guess.
Manic Webb
I know they wouldn't be able to get away with blood-spray. I'm just saying that instead of slicing everything in half and it turning out to be a robot, Jack could go against a living creature and scratch it up pretty badly. They get away with way too many nose-bleeds, punched-out teeth, and bloody mouths on "Powerpuff Girls" for Samurai Jack to only be able to fight robots. SadClown
Three simple words, it's not Japanese. So therefore, it's not anime, even if it does *look* like it.
Whiteblaze
Guilty pleasure? huh?...anyway... I love Samurai Jack! To me, it's one of the best non-anime, action shows out there! Well also, for a show that's new & it's very funny! Also, I like most of the music. Yes, Semjaza Azazel & Manic, you two are right. Also, that was my thinking of why there were so many robot enemies. It doesn't bother me, really, but, when I first started watching it I really didn't notice and then it suddenly hit me. That's true though, they just can't have him slicin' n' dicin' all of his enemies if they were living creatures. & Manic what you're also right about is in PPG, they have lots of violent stuff, in particlar, how they beat up Mojo. But anyway, does anyone who's seen that ep. where Jack is after some crystal, that could possibly get him home, and he has to go in this temple/dungeon (I can't remember what it was exactly) to get it but, there's this guy trying to get it too? Well, doesn't he kind of remind you of that person named Jigen from Lupin III?
Semjaza
Originally posted by Manic They get away with way too many nose-bleeds, punched-out teeth, and bloody mouths on "Powerpuff Girls" for Samurai Jack to only be able to fight robots.
I think even in the opening credits of Powerpuff Girls they punch Him in the face and his teeth and blood fly out. I agree with you. I honestly don't know why they couldn't work something in and tone down the chopping things up a bit. It would help things out I'd imagine, but then again... Samurai Jack isn't exactly deep, so they'll probably never ditch the whole robot idea. It's an easy way to get away with most anything.
LetalisNox
Samurai Jack is obviously the brainchild of someone heavily influenced by anime, as is the Powerpuff girls (those EYES) and Dexter's Laboratory. (One episode of Dexter has him fighting this tall, well-built, blue-haired male bombshell with big narrow eyes and a weird way of talking. It SCREAMED anime, let me tell you.) animeforever105
Samurai Jack is a good cartoon. Some eps. do get a little boring because of the little dialogue but the music is awesome and played just right so you don't really need dialogue. The new Dexter's Lab. stinks. I agree about the robot thing. I never really noticed it at first but he is always slashing the robots in half or cutting their heads off. Then of course you see the sparks come out as it short-circuts and blows up or oil spurting out of it before it blows up. P.S. The Scotsman is cool.
spike speigel
I don't really like Samurai Jack. It just really bores me and the main villian(I don't know is name)makes me laugh every time I see him. They could have at least made an evil shape-shifting demon look cooler, don't you think? The long hair thing makes no sense to me. When ever his ponytail gets separated, they give him way too much hair. He shouldn't have that much from his small ponytail. Of course, this is all just my opinion.
