Corey
I had this idea today. Would it be possible for OtakuBoards to develope a common council (a group of members chosen to vote on certain things)? Someone (James, Charles, Adam) could choose a few members and allow them to vote on such things as who deserves banning. Or the adoption of a new moderator. Or even creating/destroying forums. Just an idea.
RPGchick
I think that would be a great idea. Then regular people could get involved in the voting and decision making. I would make the boards more member friendly.
Manic Webb
Actually, James, Charles, the Super Mods, and the Mods already do all that. There's usually a discussion made whenever somebody thinks a member should be banned. I'm not too sure how mods are selected (I have no idea how I got this job), but if memory serves me, nearly all members of OB discussed the removal of the Newbie Lounge. And right now, quite a few members are talking about the Video Game forums in a nearby thread.
James
Manic is right. Most large issues are discussed (either within staff or within the membership). But also, bear in mind that we already have a "Common Council" of sorts. The Moderators. Moderators are members too. They come from within the membership and they're chosen by me. So, that's no different to a Common Council, if you think about it. ^_^
Corey
Ahhh... An Ob Underground right beneath my nose. I should have known better. One person shouldn't have absolute power on issues as important as banning.
James
Originally posted by KnightOfTheRose One person shouldn't have absolute power on issues as important as banning.
I'd say that about 50% of the bans that take place are discussed by the Moderators. The others are usually done autocratically by myself or Charles, with limited discussion/consultation on most occasions. It's fair to say that most web forums deal with banning in a pretty autocratic way. If we were to discuss every ban on OtakuBoards, we'd never get anything done. So, there's a good balance. Though, there is nothing wrong with banning someone autocratically. I think it's fair to say that most online forums take this approach; especially very large forums. I mean, basically, we are the ones who set the rules and provide the services in the first place. So, we also have the right to decide who can participate in our community. And we choose to decide that based on a set of public rules. So I can't say that I see much of a problem in that sense.
Corey
I get what you mean, James. If someone has blatantly disregarded the rules, they deserve to get banned right away. I take it that you guys discuss banning when the infractions are minor, or if an infraction is in dispute.
Guest Midnight Rush
James is like the President. He is responsible to all the members that he does a good job, and takes our feedback. But at the same time, THE leader of something just has to make decisions at times. Keep up the good work, man!
Baron Samedi
Also, it would skew the balance of power if a new 'force' was to enter the field. It also turns into an elitist symbol, as well as being unnecessary. Having two power centres would probably be disruptive. Moderators are really all that is needed ~_^
Gavin
I'm going to side with Josh on this one although the idea is sound in theory I think it would cause quite a few problems once implemented. The Moderators do their job to a tee and a think there really isn't any reason to create some kind of a parliament which would effectively usurp their powers. One of the few things I would agree with Corey on would be possibly a little more transparency about the election of Moderators, though if memory serves when that happened it caused some problems. I think we have a good system and "If it ain't broke don't fix it".
Pumpkin
That reminds me..I always did wonder why there was no Newbie Section, how do people introduce themselfs that are new? Just curious on why it was taken out. As far as Moderators go...on some forums, they can take things a bit too far, its an easy way to lose members. I haven't seen much of that here in this forum so maybe the council thing is a good thing. But then again I haven't been here all that long either ;/

Baron Samedi
Alan's right ~_^ Newbie Lounge was...what could well be called a...cesspit. Of spam. Non-nutritious massacre for your eyeballs.
Gavin
Yes if I remember correctly the Newbie Forum was just a basic spamming fest for those who wanted to up their posts without actually having to put any effort into what they wrote. It was actually a bit of a shame the forum didn't work out as it would have been nice to give newbies a chance to introduce themselves a bit more easily. Baron Samedi
Anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but I do know that some forums did not add to your post count. And I do believe that two of them were Newbie Lounge and Your Picture. Or maybe it was NL and Art Request...oh, I dunno. But post-counts can be disabled.
