I'm sure that by now all of you are WELL aware that SURFACE released a new single today, called "I'm Fine Thank You and You?". Actually, since it's written in Japanese, you have to pronounce it in a crippling Japanese accent -

AIMU FAIN SENKYUU ENJUU?

Undoubtedly taken out of their high school English textbook. Anyway I liked this song enough I figured I'd share it with you in wonderful 56kbps MP3 quality (bolded and underlined to catch your attention before you hit the back button).

So click here to listen to this song.

Now I know most of you could care less about this, but the title is FUNNY ENGRISH, surely that's some incentive to give it a listen.

And afterwards you can always go back to listen to big angry man rock or cool tough guy gangsta rap or whatever it was you were listening to before.

I liked the song a lot! In fact, got any other recommendations by this band? But this thread makes me wonder if there are any real JRock fans here?

On a side note, isn't it weird that most people who watch Anime, listen to Jpop, like manga and play import games don't know a word of Japanese and don't seem have any interest in learning it.

Considering I know no Japanese is hard to understand anything it says. The quality of the sound isn't very great either. I don't understand the song at all I will still give it a good rating since I am a fan of Japanese stuff.:)
The lyrics are unimportant. I didn't give a full quality sound sample because that would be slightly illegal, but I think this is ok. Oh, and bias points for the song, I love it.

Every song they do is really good... just make sure you don't get them mixed up with one of the many other "Surface" groups out there (just look for Japanese titles I guess). As for real Jrock fans, no, there are none here as far as I know.

Meh, I listened to about a minute or two of it. It had too much of a 'pop' sound for my tastes. I am not saying it was bad, it just did not appeal to me.
Well at least someone didn't BS their rating of the song. Yes, SURFACE would certainly fit pretty well in the pop category.

^^ There's a grey area between ROCK and POP in Japan called Visual Kei! :) They sound like the group Wyse. BTW, I tried d/ling some mp3's by a group called "Surface" and it was disturbing...

I guess you and me are the only two JRockers here! =D

Yeah, you probably got some other Surface. Here, some songs I like:

?È?É?µ?Ä?ñ?Ì
?»?̐æ?ɁE?é?à?Ì

about love
?N?̐º?Å?N?Ì?·?×?Ä?Łc
?{?N?n?~?^?T????
.5 (HALF)
?»?ê?¶?á?o?C?o?C

Maybe that'll get you started. Oh, and I'm not a jrocker... I listen to pop and rock and music not from Japan as well.

BTW, some of these song titled don't show up right for some reason...

I do wish the MP3 was higher quality... I'm a freak about such things.

Obviously, I have no idea what this song is really about. It really doesn't matter, but I'm not going to give it bonus points because it's Japanese so I can feel "cool". There seems to be enough of that going on in here, and seems to me that wrist cutter picked up on that too heh.

I like the song. It reminds me of a particular group I can't think of for some reason. It's pop rock-ish obviously, which kind of seems to be a negative thing on OB to a lot of people for whatever reason, but it seems really well done. I like the sections in the song where he raises the octaves in his voices for some reason.

I'll have to search out a better quality MP3 before I could really say a final opinion on it to be honest. I get the same vibe I get from a lot of Japanese songs though... that it sounds like older western style rock almost.

Not that that's bad... But are there any Japanese rock groups that are really on the cutting edge sound wise? I get the feeling that most seem to stick to what they know is safe and will work... stuff people can easily like. Even the ones I see people talk about here that are more offbeat seem to stay within those boundaries. I'd like to know some of those bands, as I'm sure there are many.

Anyway, I obviously don't know much of what I'm talking about in terms of Japanese music... so I need some help heh. All I really listen to is Hideki Naganuma (and he makes game music, so it probably doesn't even count), The Pillows, some Faye Wong and Guitar Vader.

That was the first Japanese song I've ever heard.
It sucked.
God.
If I had to judge this band by that song alone, I'd sincerely hope that there are better Japanese band out there than that.
I guess you'll never know...

Semjaza Azazel, if your looking for a band with it's own style, I HIGHLY recommend Dir en Grey, seeing that you have a Marilyn Manson avatar. There's nothing like them anywhere else in Japan.

Recommended Songs:

Filth, Raison D'etre, HYDRA, Zan, Zomboid, Pink Killer.

I have a quick question... are the Japanese fond of the French language? I have noticed in several song titles of stuff I have looked at that there is French in them. I mean, right there in your reccomended songs you have Raison D'etre.

It is just something that I have been wondering for a while...

I think it became somewhat of a trend in the visual rock scene back in the early '90s when bands like L'Arc~en~Ciel started picking French names. It has since spread and now the majority of visual bands pick the weirdest names that, if not French, sure resemble it a lot. "raison d'etre" seems to be a particularly popular phrase for littering about the music.

But this fascination with French seems pretty limited to visual bands, which are just a small portion of Japanese music. I haven't really seen it become a large deal in any other genre.
