"Do you think this one will work?" The young student scientist turned from the terminal, which displayed a long, complicated series of commands, processes, and responses. She looked to the large tank in the center of the pristine white and silver room. In it, a girl hung suspended, her long raven black hair flowing gracefully around her. The student turned to her sensei, Doctor Aaron Rosenthal, one of the most respected bio-engineers in the world. As a professor at Alsace University, he took on one promising student each year to be his assistant. This year he had chosen Shunelle Bordeaux. She could hardly believe her luck! And this year, he would be undertaking one of his greatest projects. He had never told her the details, naturally, but rumors had begun to spread around the campus. The professor had been receiving odd letters and visitors in the past few months. Shunelle looked back at the tank. The girl's hair had shifted in the pale green waters. She could know clearly see the long thin silver cables coming from every part of her body. Shunelle's light brown eyes softened. This girl would never know a real life. She was an experiment: something to be poked, prodded, and examined at every turn. Doctor Rosenthal turned to her from his own terminal. He was sullen, as he had been for the past few weeks. His usually smiling and tanned face was pale, drawn, and frowning. The grey hair that had seemed afraid to show its face now made up the majority on his balding crown. The man looked all his fifty-six years and much more.
"For all of our sakes, I hope so." He turned back to his terminal and entered the last few commands. His words had left his young protégée in shock. That wasn't something he would usually say. There was something very odd happening, something very odd indeed.

The thick glass walls of the tank slid silently its top and the girl inside fell to the bottom. She stood tentatively, then fell to the laboratory floor. Shunelle tried to help her to her feet, but she pushed herself away across the shining floor, still unable to stand.
"Try reassuring her. She feels threatened right now. Any language will do. I'm almost certain that part of her programming is functioning." Shunelle shrugged was about to try when the girl spoke in a shaky voice.
"Who are you people? What it this place? Why am I here?" She looked around the room, the pupils of her violet eyes expanding and contracting as she focused on the gleaming objects in the laboratory. Shunelle placed a gentle, reassuring hand on her shoulder.
?You are in the genetics and bio-engineering laboratories of Alsace University in Kentucky. I am Shunelle Bordeaux, a student here, and this is Doctor Aaron Rosenthal, my ??
?You bastard! How could you do this to me?!? The girl was standing now and her eyes glowed a malevolent crimson. Shunelle took a fearful step back and gasped in horror. The girl turned to her. ?Go now, and don?t tell anyone what you?ve seen here. Go!? Shunelle turned and ran back to her dormitory. She fumbled with the lock and dropped her jumbled mass of keys. Cursing, she bent to pick them up when the door opened, revealing her room-mate, Damien. He smiled and helped her to her feet.
?Another late night with the professor? I?m beginning to think something else might be going on. What are you two working on, anyway? I never tell me.? She walked in, ignoring all his questions.
?You know I can?t tell you that. Now leave me alone. I have to change, then there?s all my homework?? She walked into her room, leaving the door open. He followed and stood in the doorway, watching her intently. She smirked and would have been happy to do anything else he wanted her to, but there was a knock at the door, cutting their playtime short. He reluctantly left to answer the door.

Can anyone help me think of a title? That's the only thing I'm stuck on. And tell me what you think!
