Butthole Surfers!!

I'm sure a bunch of people will be like "What a stupid name!", but it's true. I think it reflects the nature of most of their songs though. They really are just random, very much like the Pixies.

The interesting thing is that the Butthole Surfers are much older than the Pixies, and certainly much older that people seem to think. They are mostly known for the song Pepper off of Electriclarryland, which was released in 1996, I believe. Most people seem to think they've been around since then because of that, but in reality they've been a band since at least 1983.

Anyway, I'm sure most people know Pepper... At least people around my age, as it was played on the radio very often when it was released:
I don't mind the sun sometimes, the images it shows
I can taste you on my lips and smell you in my clothes
Cinnamon and sugary and softly spoken lies
You never know just how you look from someone else's eyes.

Anyway, just wondering what anyone else thinks of this band... whether they just know Pepper, or far more.

Personally, my favorite songs are Cough Syrup and TV Star (both off Electriclarryland). Their website has plenty of MP3s for download and a radio stream as well... so check it out.

Heh. I bought the album like you told me to, and I'm happy you ordered me to, great Sej Semjaza Tony, Sir!

Ehm. Pepper still does sound vaguely familiar, especially the first time I heard it. But it ends there heh.

I pretty much like the songs you like from Electriclarryland. Now I want to check out their other albums.

They've been around since 1983? O.o

That's a long time.

I'm wondering, Tony, have you gotten any of their other albums? Recommend any?

There are a few that are considered best. Electriclarryland isn't one of them, but it's up there. It's just that it is probably the easiest to find at this point.

Independent Worm Saloon, Humpty Dumpty LSD, Locust Abortion Technician and Psychic Powerless (their first LP). I'd check out any of those.

YES! I like them too, Semmie! Remember that day we had a whole conversation about them and stuff like that? Yeah, well, I do. And I do LOVE that song. I know the entire thing by heart it seems. I don't know if I know any of their other songs, but yeah...

All I remember is that the CD with the funny looking clowns on it...well, it made a nice frisby. Sorry Uncle Scott, we had no idea! ^_^;

At one point in life I owned this CD. I think it was early in highschool...but, along with Jane's Addiction, The Toadies, Primitive Radio Gods, and a host of other CD's they got jumbled up and lost. The song Pepper was one of those constantly played songs on my hometown alt station, so I think I was a bit over-exposed to the song.

I remember it being a pretty good album. Next time I am at my parents I'll have to find it, it could be another Blind Melon (which is one of those CD's I liked before but I really like now).

I think my dad mentioned at some point that one of his friends knew the drummer for The Toadies. I never got too much into them, I have only heard Possum Kingdom. I have always enjoyed the song, though. So perhaps I shall take a look at what else they have.

As for the Butthole Surfers, I swear I have heard these guys before. I do recognize the song Pepper, but I do not think that is the song I heard... I do not know. Maybe it was a different band I am thinking of. Though, the Butthole Surfers are good as well.

I don't know much but I do know I promised you I'd look at this thread! I do indeed like the Butthole Surfers, as well as the Pixies (which you know), but the toadies, can't say I know them. But Heaven's Cloud, I love the Primitive Radio God's. I don't know any song titles but "Standing Outside a broken telephone booth with money in my hand" yeah....a long name. I haven't heard the Butthole Surfers or Primitive Radio God's for a really long time!

Love, Kaola

That was amusing.

I've read this, don't ask me if it's 100% true heh. Supposedly, Possum Kingdom wasn't even the single... It was a b-side on the single. One day some DJ just flipped the vinyl (or whatever) and played it, and it just gained in popularity. They wound up doing a video for it eventually, which was quite good.

The thing I LOVE about The Toadies is how satirical the writing was. Possum Kingdom and Tyler seemed like almost nice, normal love songs if you listen to them and don't really pay attention to the lyrics...

But if you do pay attention, they are rather violent and amusing songs about these girls that basically wanted nothing to do with him.

I think that's my favorite part of the band... not to mention they're just solid overall.

So check out Tyler at least. They also did a nice live cover of Where Is My Mind? by the Pixies. I was surprised he could hit that high of an octave.

I've heard a few songs by Butthole Surfers; Pepper of course, and their version of Hurdy Gurdy Man by Donovan, and that thing they did with Moby, Tiny Rubberband or whatever. However, not once have I seen an album in a store. I blame that entirely on Australia.

Blind Melon...that brings back way too many memories.
