stardust
AH man,I went to this band meeting today and expected to just pick up music. If you didn't know,I'm a flute player, and as soon as I got to the high school, they handed me a piccolo (which I've never touched, lol) and threw me in a chair.I was so lost!I still am lost!I'm the only freshman in my section,I'm scared now!:nervous: Thought I'd share my experience.Lol. Anyways, anybody else in a marching band or anything?Just curious.
Change
Just relax and have fun with it. Try and see the humor and absurdity in it. I had friends in marching band for 4 years. They say they really didn't do it for the music, they did it for the friendships and the people, for having fun. So just chill and let things work themselves out. Corey
Never liked my marching band. Too much movement.
XeEmO
I was never in a real marching band. I play the saxaphone, and once a year the band needs to march in a parade. Next year I've decided I'm not going to be in band. I'm just going to take private lessons. I was in band mainly to hang out with friends. I also enjoyed playing the saxaphone. I just don't like quite a few people in the band, and I especially don't like the way band is going to be run next year. They basicly split the band up into two. One is for all of the good players and one is for everyone else. The conductor says he's not spliting us up by how good we are, yet he had auditions to get into the other band. Shaun
I was in marching band all thru highschool. I played Clarinet and I was assistant section leader for 2 years (my best friend was leader, and we're an awesome team, so yeah.). I enjoyed it so much. Except band camp is seriously like boot camp. My best advice is to practice your music, and ask questions anytime you need to. That's why the instructors are there. If they want the band to do well in competitions and such, they'll take the time to help you for sure. ;)
RainbowGuy
Gee, i wish i played an instrument in my high school's band (instead of just in my bedroom), so i could have gone to Band Camp.... .... .... and one time at Band Camp, we .... Guest dayday
Not really in a band. But play an insrument. My class neverf got far so the things I can play are a warm-up, Mary Had a Little Lamb, and Hot Cross Buns. Plus it's not a hard instrument, just a recorder. Guest Taylor Hewitt
A marching band? Is it like in drumline where the teachers are really mean and boss you around and stuff. If it is im not joining one!
Domon
That was a college marching band that was featured in the movie "Drumline", and yes a lot of instructors can seem to be mean, but that's because they have high expectations from you the band member. If you just joined to goof off and chit chat with your friends then you should find another class. And there are instructors that are laid back and just want you to have fun with the band. I'm in a band that's kind of in between, my band instructor can come off as grouchy and stuff but that's when we have something major like a big concert and we aren't doing as good as we should be doing. But we do march, we've marched in the American Royal Parade and a few others too, but we don't go to competitions.
KKC
Lol, Im the youngest player overall in our marching band. Im in the pit and Im in 7th grade. I barely know anything on the keyboards. And ofcorse Im not aloud to be battery yet. I was so nervous on Tuesday when we had our first practice, but I made friends quick and one of the guys is really nice. Im not too worried. *looks at watch* I have practice in a hour and a half ^^
Terpischore
I'm in the colorguard in the marching band - in case you don't know what that is, it's the flags. ;)..but I haven't yet experienced a show yet, i've only just begun the training.
GreenEyedDragon
gah....i'm in colorguard with Terpischore....its pretty much boot camp so far, but we had a good time when there was lunch break...i'm looking forward to learining the actual show though, because atleast we'll get to MOVE, and the band will be there. (woot woot) anywho, yeah it is the flags, but we've recently gotten our rifles, and hopefully we'll eventually get sabres...muahah...okay
stardust
very cool, our band in 7th and 8th grade told us we weren't split by musical ability, yet they made us play an AUDITION each year,i was so sick of it!Of course i'm not in honor's band this year, but the marching band is just everybody and I'm excited! Anyways, the conducter is really nice and stuff, the whole feeling of the room was just fun!He wears a whistle around his neck and smiles when he gives us directions. It's cool...I just gotta get Piccolo down, because it's a higher pitch then flute and very difficult compared to it.I've been struggling with my tuner with an hour, but it's fun to take it around and watch the pitch change in people's voices, lol. The girls next to me and the section leader were nice and trying to help, but it was very fast paced, which I'm not used to. juna
*hugs* yay, a fellow flutist. I still have mine and pick it up every now and then. *ahhh, what memories......* I actually lettered in Marching Band in High School...(*cough*dork*cough*) ^_~ I loved it though, by my senior year I too played the pic, it was so cute and tiny...laf, I drove everyone crazy with how high it got. We used to go all over, Washington, Florida, NYC (the school was an uber music and arts school) and I loved every minute of it. Relax and have fun with it, it's a chance to play some music and be amoung your peers, *envy*, ahhh, to be back there again..... ^_^
amibasuki
heh, marching band is awesome. band camp is probably one of the best parts of it ^_^. I'm in the drumline. the drum instructor hasn't decided 100% who's going to be playing what, but I'm probably either going to be playing xylophone (bleh, I want to march on the field since it is, you know, marching band :cross: ), or snare; xylophone being a choice because I happen to be pretty decent at it, while almost everybody else can't play anything with 16th notes in it 0_o'. *praying for snare*. last year I played quints. man, that was awesome. if I had the choice to play quints this year, I would without a doubt. but we'll see how it goes, I guess.
KKC
You may be in drumline! Quints? are those quads? *gets really jelouse* Im a wanna be drumer and practice tonight was tough. In our performance we have a drum solo that pit a Battery do. Of course it sucks now, but hopefully it will get better.
amibasuki
doooode, what do you play? yeah, quints/quads (depends on how many drums there are) are awesome. my second favorite drumline instrument would have to be the base drums though, when it's done juuuuuust right. we start practice on the 23rd. I really need to 'work on my chops', as Josh, the almighty section leader said, since I haven't practiced much at all since summer started. so I don't end up doing xylophone >_<'.
Brasil
Depends what Marching Band you're in. My high school's one was...how should I describe it...perverted Pythonianism. Most of us were Monty Python fanatics, and had the perverted sense of humor needed to be a Pythonian. Music trips were fun. Like Change said, most do it for the absurdity and fun. Sure, there were musicians and such, but when you're up at 2 am in a hotel room in VA Beach, and your friend, Scott, is walking around in a pink blanket (apparently he was naked beneath the blanket), singing Matchmaker Matchmaker in the tone of Wicket The Ewok, musicianship doesn't really matter; you're more concerned with getting it on tape, so you can blackmail later. Marching band/band/chorus all merge together, so really, joining one means joining them all. Not literally, though. Nobody requires you to be in all 3. But you eventually head down to the Band Room every other class, whether it's just to go somewhere cool, or sleep, or get away from your Nazi gym teacher. Getting involved with the Music Department was one of my best decisions in high school. When I say "getting involved," I mean GETTING INVOLVED. We described ourselves as one, big incestual family. None of us were really related, of course, but those music dorks and drama geeks were my second family. I highly recommend sticking with Marching Band. Dmitri_Dragoon
Ahh.. Marching band the best days of my life. The torment of the freshmen, the long hot days of band camp, and the competitions and free football games that I sleep through. Yup, I'm in marching band. I'm the section leader for the low brass section and I play the sousaphone/tuba. Great fun, and this year, since I'm the leader, I get to work the freshmen until they cry, then I give them a nice water break ^_^
stardust
Don't make the freshmen cry!Lol,I'm so frustrated w/ my piccolo I sware I'm gonna melt it down and make it a keychain -_-'
Dmitri_Dragoon
Don't worry, I have no intention of making the freshmen cry. Though today band camp did start, and I was only worried about making sure there was an instrument for the freshmen to play. o_O So much fun. But the assistant director did get mad at me because it was 90 degrees and I was sweating like a preacher in a whore house, and was extremely irritable, just think and you will know. Tobiass
I played Trumpet and enjoyed Marching band. I live in Texas and Music is pretty big down here in school, esp Marching band. Our school is constantly in the top of our State, and we're finally getting to go to nationals again (like 10 years ago, they went, and no one payed for their trip, left the program poor and owing a lot of money, took a long time to convince them to let the school go again). Anywho I always liked getting my marching tan, and competing at such a high level.
Armadillomon
lol Tobiass mentioned one of my fave parts of marching band: the infamous band tan! Band is like one of the only times I ever tan. I even worked at a summer camp for five weeks last year and was just as pale at the end of the 5 weeks as I was when I started, but the first day of band camp and I was uber-tanned! (Note: when one has a band tan, one shouldn't wear a button-collar shirt unbuttoned for school pictures *cough-tanline-cough*) I also lettered in band from my marching band and winter percussion experiences. I play the trumpet in marching band and auxiliary (pit non-mallet) percussion in winter percussion. I love band and all of my friends in band like they were my own family. Great memories! I wish I wasn't a senior this year :( oh, well, there's always college! Besides, this year, I am a SECTION LEADER for the trumpets! Woo-hoo! dark warrior
ahhh...the school band, i really miss it. Nothing gets the blood pumpin like a concert.Marching band was nothing but a chore though, give me the jazz band any day.
Celia
Ah! On the first day of school in fourth grade, the orchestra teacher put me in a violin lesson. I had no idea what a violin was!!! And I've never handled an instrucment. I was so afraid when he picked on me...
