I was watching "The Crossroads" (not Britney Spears one, but the one with Steve Vai) and wondering, what if there was a guitar duel between all the cool guitarists? Who would probably win?
OK, imagine a duel between Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Kirk Hammett and Jimi Hendrix... Who do you think would win and why?
I think that Steve Vai would win, because he is not only fast, but he plays so well that you can almost feel the sadness or happiness of a song by just listening to the guitars...

oh man, it depends on what guitar playing you want. if you want soulful guitar definetely jimi hendrix. if you want hardcore metal, its probably dimebad from pantera or kirk hammet. if you want classical mixed with a litte bit of classic rock its steve vai. but hands down its jimi hendrix. he still is the best guitarist alive. what he did was revolutionary. nobody had ever played an awesome guitar solo with their teeth or behind their bad before. he was the most versitial guitar player ever. he played his own soloful music and yet still managed to play bb king, chuck berry, les paul, etc. jimi hendrixs reputation, songs, and fame came from only five years in the music industry before his untimely death in europe. that is why he would win. although jimmy page would give him a run for his money and the third best would probably be yngwie malmsteen, fourth carlos santana, fifth steve vai ,sixth kirk hammet, seventh dimebag, eigth joe satriani, ninth esteban, tenth eddie van halen. that is my list. whew!!

Although it is impossible to say who the best guitarist is, it would be ridiculous to include Steve Vai and Eddie Van Halen in those catagories...they are both phenomenal guitar players but neither have done anything to revolutinize guitar playing.

The Guitar God will always be Jimi. He was so friggin innovative it was amazing. No one had ever heard a guitar played the way he played it before. A close second would have to be Stevie Ray Vaughn...both guitarists could make their instruments wail playing them in the dark, blindfolded, and behind their backs. They each revolutionized music in relevant ways...Hendrix led the thick, distorted, augmented chord revolution that leant heavily from two-finger blues riffs while Stevie combined Jimi's blues ability with twangy southern rock and pretty much developed a method of Hybrid chord picking that gives his songs a lightning quick sound.

There are plenty of guitar players that are excellent, Clapton, Paige, Vai, Van Halen, and Allman...but I don't think any could truly compare to either Hendrix or Vaughn.

Hendrix has a lot of warmth in his playing, but he isn't an amazing technical player at all. He's more about rhythm and hitting higher notes at the right spots. The group has some mostly guitar pieces, but none have ever stood out for me.

It depends on what you prefer, I guess. Personally, I can't say playing guitars with teeth has something that would make me pick Hendrix (or anyone) over anything else. In that case I should list Peter Frampton because he talked with his guitar.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Zappa. He might not have been the absolute best, but he knows a hell of a lot more than most about composition and what really works. Most people don't seem to remember the guy anymore, from what I've seen.

Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Eddie Van Halen and John Petrucci (the last guy is of Dream Theater and Liquid Tension Experiment... at least check out LTE, if you haven't) are also good picks.

I agree with most of the others mentioned. In the end I'd probably go with John Petrucci, personally.

I'd say Yngie Malemstein [can't spell his dang name right.] because he is the best guitarist ever and could beat anyone. :) Fear his powwah!

Just like Semj said, it is not just because he can play with his teeth that I will say he's the best... I'd say that Steve Vai is the best in my opinion, for he can play some really awesome stuff... I don't think that just because one revolutioned guitar playing it means they're the best...

well yes i agree jimi hendrix and stevie ray vaughn revolutionized music forever. while jimi played his ever popular blues seventh chords. and stevie ray vaughn brought his own sound, they both were super guitar players, to put it extremely lightly. while they did their contributions to music. i agree that they are all awesome guitarist, ever last one of them. but like heavens cloud said they are all great, but none of them could ever do to music what these two did. but in the end it really boils down to what you like most. but my personal favorite is jimi hendrix because his solos just lift you up. and my second favorite is dimebad, i love his dramatic climbs.

p.s. dark death, what makes a guitar player the best, in your opinion? because you never said................

I have always disagreed with the conception that Hendrix wasn't technically sound. Playing with his teeth and burning his guitar was ritualist, I know, but all of his accoustic blues song are amazingly technical...they go from being subtle to incredibly bold and I think that he has some solos that are ridiculously hard yet sound incredibly graceful.

By the way, Frank Zappa rules, his compositions are outstanding...I can't believe I forgot about him, damn! I even have Sheik Yourbouti in my car CD player right now!

soundwave2x: I myself don't know for sure... I just seem to "hear something that makes me more interested in this than that"... It just depends...

I have to agree that they are all great, like, I wouldn't do what they do even if I tried for a bunch of years... I went to Eric Clapton's last tour (which was here in Brazil) and I can tell that he plays really amazingly as well as the other guys... Jimi Hendrix is awesome also, even though I don't know that much about him and never listened to mreally many of his songs and all, but so far I did, I can tell that he really is awesome, but there is something about Steve Vai's guitar playing that just catches me...
