You got it! yay!

Heh.

Still, I think it's an interesting viewpoint. And I quite like it.

I agree with you points and thankyou for responding to my thread with such gusto. I'd like to say that my initial reaction is not someones title, it is to their post quality as has been repeated throughout this thread. The title is only used as a conformation or a surprise.

No crimson spider I don't consider you a newbie because you've been around as long as I have if not longer so in retrospect I cannot consider you a newbie.

Well I've been here almost a week now and have grown out of my Newbie status. Everybody knows me! But the point is that yes I think Newbies don't get the respect they should even if they are posting great lenghted and quality posts.

Speaking of gutters, I should have cleaned mine today. I'm rather glad I didn't because it's not something I enjoy doing.

Anyway.... my time as a newbie was pretty much washed away by the fact that my sixth post was the start of, and many of you will agree, one of the best RPGs of our Otakuian time. I'm rather proud of myself... I'd only learned what RPG stood for, and then I pulled out out of my ***. (By the way, if that's censored, it's meant to read h a t. James, you really should do something about that... it's not supposed to censor the word h a t. H a t is not a bad word James, and you and I know it.)

Anyway, I remember my first (and last) OB tip - it was from you, Raiha. You told me to put actions in italics, and a couple of PMs later, you told me how to put things in Italics. I've worked everything else out, except for the centreing tags, which I rather enjoy. All that writing coherent phrases and not spamming thing I thought was rather obvious, as I've never been to any other message board, and I didn't quite know how it worked. Or that it didn't. I assumed that people posted correctly anyway.

Sitting in Harlequin's lap while he does his modding rounds has taught me otherwise.

So there you go - I've always considered myself pretty good with the rules, I've never been told off, anyway, and I've NEVER READ THE RULES!!!!!!!

Ahem, I'm not suggesting it's a bad idea to, though. In fact, wait a sec... there, now I've read them.

I suggest everyone do so now, even if you already have, even if you're the one who wrote them, because there may be somthing you missed. :)

Hmmm. But I look down on newbies, simply because I am an evil and harsh person who enjoys making people feel inferior. Or, I enjoy having someone to hate. *moves into a defensive stance, notices no one is looking, and relaxes again*

So if you are a newbie, let time prove yourself to me.

Well... I've gotta say my piece, since I'm loud and garing, and just generally annoying ;)

The title "Newbie" doesn't say bad things to me... Because I know from personal experience that a lot of Newbies are perfectly pleasant, wonderful people. I'm in total agreement with Sara's sentiment that Newbie is a state of mind. It's when posts have absolutely no point to them, or just run around like they're in a chatroom, that I get a little bothered.

I like that, on OB, because I get to know people as "people" not as titles, since people don't base their responses on, say, the title of the thread starter, for example. And it's always the person behind the title that's important, right?

A lovely example would be the double-take I made when I saw Crimson Spider was a Newbie... I seriously never noticed O_o;; I totally don't consider you a "Newbie" CS ;) And for some reason I'd been under the impression that Tasrai had been around forever... O_o;;

*pushes her soapbox under the table* Yeah, I'm done O_o;;

Well, I'll give you my honest opinion.

I notice newbies.

When I see "newbie" as your title, I notice you. And, newbies make me excited. Why? Because they are new to the OB experience. ~_^

Some of us are new >.>;; Others just make lots of accounts.

Well I like newbies, just not the idiot newbies that piss everyone off, that's becoming a rarity now a days anyway. Heh, well I've got to say, OB does welcome it's newbies well. In most of the other forums, no one really bothers. Unless its from some other progative in their case. So its nice to be a newbie. I mean if someone holds it against you, then you don't even deserve to do whatever they are holding you against because the newbie is better than that person and probably won't do anything.

I see newbies all around. There are about 15 people who register a day, maybe more, and theyre all newbies. I see people who get the title of member or otaku or extreme otaku, and think they're better than newbies.

I think that is wrong. It doesn't matter about your title so much. It matters about your post. If they have good quality. There are a lot of people with very bad post quality and have a lot of posts. They're just trying to get a better title then a newbie.

I was a newbie once, everybody was, they just have to work they're way up. A lot of people try to do it way to fast, spam, and then get banned.

I don't think anybody should treat a newbie different. I think they are just new people to the board working they're way up. Thats all. I have nothing against them.

Anyways...I laugh at the ignorance, and shake my head sadly. Because the tendency to change usually is not dominant.

As for her view on newbies.....I've sparred a couple, and one out of ten knew what they were doing. Which is sad...but could eventually change. *crosses self*

I remember catching myself feeling surprised once, when on another board a guy who had about five posts to his name wrote something pretty intelligent in some discussion or other. :o

Newbies are new people who don't know things that are taken for granted in the forums they've registered in. They may not know things like how to insert smilies into posts, but some of them are completely new to message boards and need help. (When I went to a forum for the first time, I had no idea what the heck "lol" was and why everyone used it like it was an actual word, but I was too embarassed to ask.)
The idiot people who spam, flame, make crude remarks, hurt people's feelings and just don't listen to advice, they're what I call lamers. They could have been in the forums since the day they opened, have billions of posts, gone through them with every server change and whatnot, but if they act the donkey, they're a lamer.

I tend bot to notice newbies... Until they have a weird username or do a post I don't like (usually a a bad RPG post or a simply lame thread/post).

I think rather highlier of newbies who know what they are doing, whatever the reason is (lurkers, used to boards etc.)

I didn't know a lot of the tricks people use here at OB, but I learned. How did I learn? I didn't SPAM by making a thread asking how, or anything of that nature. Instead, whenever I saw someone do a nifty trick that I didn't know how to do, I would just quote that post and see the code they used. Haha, that's how I learned how to use Spoiler tags and Strikeout tags!

Now, I sit patiently, stalking every OBer's post, waiting for someone to use the rainbow/gradient text effect on something other than their sig... :D

Sometimes I think it would be fun to be a newbie. Just to have my title say so.

And other times, I cringe at the newbie title. The reason is, because while the people who are obviously NOT new people understand that the term "newbie" is only a state of being, and NOT a title, members who are newbies (despite their title), are the ones who don't understand that. So that's why most of the time I don't like the title. (that's why I asked that it be removed, if you get bored enough to pay any attention to what I say in the Suggestions Forum. *pauses* Or if you're cursed *coughMODcough* and you are forced to view what I write)

This goes along with what Spikey said.

In any event, if your title says newbie, and you know you're not (the whole newbie -> state of mind thing), then take pride in the title, I say. Because without newbies coming in all the time, the board would have no growth.

Because of that, when I was a newbie, after a while, I became proud of my title. I even made a banner request (for the first AND LAST time). Final_Flash (I have no idea where he is today, and I think he changed his user name along the lines?) made me a banner, with what I wanted it to say: Newbie and DARN proud of it. I would have put in the other word, but swearing isn't too nice. :D

The whole premise of it was that, again, with out "newbies" there is no growth and development. Besides, every "oldie" was a "newbie" at one point, ne?

P.S.: If you want to take a look at that banner, I've hosted it at http://members.aol.com/moonbeamxvi/images/darn_proud_newbie.gif

*doesn't bother to read other posts for lack of time*

Let's just say that if it's to the point where I call you a newbie, you shouldn't really worry. I go off on everyone. But if I think you're a newbie, then God help you.

For you need several degrees of severe help.

[Boy, I'm just seething with modesty and niceness today, aren't I? :toothy:]

I don't particularly mind being a newbie. Although part of me is resigned to it because I don't think I will ever get past newbie status, since I just don't post much :-P

But having newbie status does make me kind of shy about certain things, like posting in RPG forums. I feel like since I don't have much experience on the board, it might just make my RPG stuff look ... amateurish.

n00bs have a stigma to contend with. However, you just might slip by if you have some previous fourm experiance and you post decently, then your fine in my book (I have 1000+ post on a gaming fourm :O, and this was over three years). If you know what you are talking about and you make a point cleanly, then I don't have much of a problem with the "Newbie" title. As for everyone else...They are elietists...LOL...But when you have 2000+ post, arn't you going to be just a slight bit less tollerant?

I like the fact that most people seem ready to welcome 'newbies', especially since I think it can be intimidating sometimes for someone to start posting on a forum when they have little or no prior experience. :-)

Welcome to the boards, Kal. Same to Star I Am Not.

These are the kinds of "newbies" that should be encouraged at OB. I don't know how long either of you will stick around in the longterm, but I think you are both examples of "newbies" who don't poszt lik diz.

Apart from this whole discussion, I'm actually kinda surprised at the depth by which people can discuss the word "Newbie". Sometimes I think we are too ready to look past the basic meaning of the word -- and I think most of us agree that it's not a bad word; only low quality posts feed that impression.

Well, as a person who (and Raven can attest to this), has to remind people multiple times a day about post quality, I'm still a little cynical. However, considering Raiha and Rico put up with Raven and myself, I'm willing to give most of them the benefit of the doubt... Unfortunately, in my area, I get proved wrong a little regularly. Oh well. I'll live.

I see newbie?s, their all around me. They don't know their new, or even the rules. Some times they scare me, they are so stupid.
Hehe. :p

Well after many years of them the only problem I have is the constant questions, I can't stand people who can not work out simple things for themselves. Thus I only help people if they get to a certain level by themselves. And that about raps it up.

Sometimes I can tell who are the newbies just by looking at their posts, and I'm usually right. But when I see a well-written post that is readable and makes sense, I don't bother to see what they are. I just read it and move on.

*chuckles* ahh my views on newbie-dom.

Personally i think it is both a good thing and a bad thing to be a newbie. Being new to something isn't the nicest experience in the world lol.

When it comes to OB..it doesn't matter wether a newbie is lurking somewhere *grins* everyone on here is friendly and can actually have decent conversations.

However-When it comes to chatrooms i cant STAND newbies! I am a reg in a chatroom online and i despise newbies that come in to torment the other regs..or scroll..or use big scary, eye-blinding fonts. I tend to make snide little comments like "Inferior newbs" or something..chatroom newbies just annoy me! ARGH!

But some newbies are cool. Because of course, even regs had to be newbies at some point in time ^_^ Those that come into chatrooms or whatever to make friends..and dont use big scary fonts are usually welcomed with open arms and loose their "newbie" status lol

Its kinda scary how discrimination exsists on the internet..isnt it? *sigh* ahh well

I hope no-one flames me for this! I LOVE YOU ALL! REALLY I DO!! ^__^

New newbie here!
Now, here's a prime example of a newbie. Someone who posts just to post, with no intent on making any effort to contribute to thread. And posting an attachment that has nothing to do with even his post.

=)

Please read the rules, Duelist Goku. They are located on the header on the main OtakuBoards page. Also try to do your best to not do that again.

[James Voice-Over] Now what we're seeing here is very rare, indeed. Neil is trying to solve a problem with grace and finess...and not with random curse words. I see improvement. [/James Voice-Over]
