I would say the recorder is the sissy way out...and yes, I can actually play it......but for sheer coolness. I would recomend the flute.

It's simple and elegant, rewarding to play. Better than the violin, won't drive your family insane as you practice. Then again...I always loved the piano. 10 years of hell playing it...but it still is fun

I've been playing the alto sax for 6 years. I still enjoy playing it very much. So I'd have to recommend the soprano sax (if you want something small). One of the cool things about playing the sax is you can move to tenor, baritone, alto, or soprano, and use the same fingerings. I guessing you're getting an instrument to learn for the school band?

tell me, what level of music do you play on?

from the description you've said, flute would be the best choice. but clarinet also might be good, if buying new reeds every so often wouldn't bother you much.

Drums aren't easy if you actually hold yourself to some sort of regiment and don't just play randomly for the hell of it. Same with anything else. In fact, I'd say drums are one of the hardest to play in situations where you have to not play for certain beats or periods of time. I find most people instinctively just want to hit the drums on a constant basis lol.

In any case, Shippo said a small wind instrument which makes me think of three particular instruments: flutes, soprano saxophones and clarinets. Alto saxophones could possibly fit, but I guess it depends what your definition of small is.

I've played saxophones for years -- soprano, alto, tenor and baritone -- and I would normally recommend that. I personally prefered tenor.

If it were me, I'd probably go with flute though. Flute can be an amazing instrument if you learn to play it well, and is easily capable of pretty much anything you want. The only problem is that is probably the hardest of those I've mentioned so far... so I'd probably say saxophone or clarinet.

I personally think recorder is a waste of time and is only useful if you want to learn basic music reading and tones. If you're interested enough to get a real instrument... just get one. However, it's hard to just jump in on one. There are a lot of stores and rental places you could work through before you make up your mind.

Edit for below -- Well, if you don't explain yourself... I don't know how you could expect anyone to just know what you mean. The word "drums" implies a lot more than the thing you're talking about.

If you want to play the instrument, the drums are always fun. I know because I have been playing them for about five years. The guitar is also something you can always be doing somethign different on. I also play the guitar so yeah. I originally started off playing the saxophone but gave it up after about three months. I simply didn't enjoy it too much.
However no instrument is easy to play if you want to be half-decent. You will have to practice and there will most likely be times when you would rather shoot yourself then play your instrument ever again, but stick with it and you will be rewarded with praise from others and a personal realisation that you are actually good at something.

I think Semjaza already said it. The best choices would probably be a flute, saxaphone, or clarinet. I personally play brass, the trombone, but my friends have let me play their instruments and taught me very simple notes just during class and it is really easy with all three of these. Saxaphone was a little bit harder for me, just because it feels really weird when you hold it. But clarinet and flute were easy to hold and really simple. If you want a small woodwind instrument then I would say your best bet is the flute or clarinet. If you are willing to go up a little then I would say the saxaphone. All three are very cool instruments!:)

Personally, I'd recommend the oboe. ^_~

I can't make a sound on a flute, heh. I'm a reed-instrument player.

The oboe's sort of a cross between a flute and a clarinet, and, in my opinion, much cooler than flute. There are a lot of flute players, and it's so much fun to be in the minority. You get cool parts, and stuff.

It's got a double reed, which is different and cool. It also has a slightly nasal sound compared to other reed instruments, but hey--I still think it's awesome. I don't actually play it, but I'd like to learn, heh.

If the nasal sound bugs you too much, go for the small Eb clarinet--also a fun one. It's about the size of a recorder, I think, but infinitely cooler. (It would be hard to get less cool than a recorder. I was forced to play recorder for five years during school, and I hated it.)

If you really want to play a flute, see if you can get ahold of a larger one--lower than the regulars. They hook around, and are much cooler than normal flutes. flute-ness

Go for something a little out-of-the-ordinary, heh. Tis fun to be different.

(Big instruments are cool, too. My sister plays the baritone and bari sax, and wants to learn Tuba. I've played also played alto and base clarinet, and they are awesome.)

But yes, if you want small, go for oboe or Eb clarinet. Or like Tony mentioned, a small saxophone. (Is there one that's just straight, like a clarinet? I think there is, but I'm not sure...)

Well i play the drums (when i say this is i mean DRUM KIT). I have been playing for about 3 or 4 years now. I am in a band called The Spheres and have my first gig (with this band) a week tomorrow ^^.

I do believe that the Harmonica is a great instrument. I do have one but i dont "Play" it fi you know what i mean, i just play it asa hobby kinda thing. I wouldn't even go as far to call it that, but i can play it. It is actually not as easy as people think, but yeah, if you stick at it like any insturment you will be great at it. It might however drive your parents up the wall ^^.

then have at it ^_^. harmonica's usually don't cost too much, anyway.

still, don't completely give up on school concert band ;). it teaches you a lotta important things that could help you with your music. maybe not harmonica, but music things, nontheless. and trumpet's really fun, too ^^ .
