Obesity Lawsuit?

I'll only say one thing here. Well, two.

First, I agree with what most of you are saying -- sueing McDonald's is ridiculous, especially based on something like this.

However the threat of more lawsuits is having a beneficial impact. Kraft announced that it will be cutting transfat from several products (including Oreos) and that it will be investing funds to find healthier alternative ingredients for some of its most popular junk-foods.

Sure, they were scared into it (wrongly so), but hey...if they get rid of transfat from Oreos (and you don't want to know how bad transfat is for you), that's a really good step. I wish more food companies would use healthier ingredients in foods like that -- it's certainly possible, but often it's just a matter of being too costly for these companies. So yeah, I guess that's a good thing to come out of a crazy lawsuit.

In the U.S. it is never the person's fault, it is always someone elses. No one forced those obese people to keep eating obviously grosely fatty foods.

BTW JesusC, those are called Darwin awards, they are givin out anuly...

He's a brilliant one. Get fat easy, then sue. *snort* People have too much free time.

Some fast food companies are doing this too. Or doing something to make their food healthier. I think one of them was Mcdonalds.

Sueing someone for manufacturing something in my opinion is quite stupid. They are given the right to manufacture the food, you are given the right to choose to eat it or not. I do not believe that its the manufacturers fault that you chose to eat there. Sure they WANT you to eat there, but thats because they made the food for that purpose to be eaten....IN MODERATION!!!

I don't think McDonald's has been sitting back planning on how they are going to make America become largely over weight so that they can take over America and soon THE WORLD!!!

rolls his eyes Its just plain stupid!

I mean essentiallly the person is suing McDonald's for exercising a right giving to us by this country. Uh....wait that doesn't make sense does it. I'm suing you because you are doing what you're allowed to do.....uh yeah....woo smart country....*sweatdrops*

Well, McDonald's should be responsible for producing food that isn't actually dangerous. And you can argue that very highly fatty food is dangerous to one's health. Then maybe you can question whether or not standards need to exist to restrict food that is so fatty that it becomes quite dangerous to the body -- even in moderation.

Having said that, sueing McDonald's for making you fat isn't the right way of going about it. McDonald's will only make big changes to their menu if people actually stop eating there -- if they discover that people don't want that kind of food anymore. But since people are continuing to eat that kind of food, McDonald's has little reason to change the ingredients.

I'm kind of wondering if the end justifies the means though. lol

If McDonald's and Kraft substantially remove a lot of fat from their food so that they avoid lawsuits...that's a good outcome, even though I might completely disagree with the guy who sued them in the first place.

You know what the funny thing is? Now they're saying that some of the ingredients in fast food is actually addictive!!!! I don't know if that was a scientifically proven fact or just something that someone's lawyer was trying to make people believe, but either way, it could give someone an excuse. What's next, the patch for McDonald's? Who knows?

It's all about responsibility. No one wants to take responsibility for their own actions anymore, so we'll blame someone else.

We ate McDonalds food three times a day and now have weekly heart attacks, but it can't be our fault. So, let's sue!

First off that is a lame reason to sue. I mean, ultimately, the guy had a choice, he could have gone to subway, or if he had to go to McDonalds, he could have gotten a salad. But I did read in my health magazine that obese people cost taxpayers, like, 40 billion a year in medical expenses related to their obesity. Thats, like, alot! Maybe instead of having McDonald's cut down on their greasy food, there should be some kind of law that overweight people cannot eat there. Like on rides where it says "You must be this tall" Well thered be a weight maximum.

You know why McDonalds advertises with little kids in it's commercials? Do you know why they put "play places/playhouses/whatever the hell else they call em" in the resteraunts? It is to draw young kids in early and hook them for life. I admit, McDonalds has one hell of a quarter pounder, but i'm not stupid enough to eat there everyday. I eat there like once a month, if that. But also, it is the parents choice to let them get hooked on fatty grease filled foods by driving them there and letting them eat. But once a kid is old enough(say 12 or 13), they should be smart enough to realise what they are doing and be able to stop. So blame not McDonalds, blame yourself you shall.

All these problems the fast food places have been having is most likely the reason that all of a sudden they all have low-fat alternatives and nutritional charts. Having these now, people have no excuse to sue at all because places such as McDonalds can simply say that all their information is in the charts, so if the consumers don't read it, it is their own fault.

These people are just out to get quick money by waddling about getting fat and complaining about it. But as James said before, it does cause fast food restaurants to consider healthier alternative ingredients. (NOOO!! not my precious msg!)

Now if you really want a good subway, try the pizza sub.*drools*

::sigh:: This all started when the lady spilled hot coffee on herself because she wasn't warned in the first place. She got pretty rich too. Now everybody thinks that they can sue other people for their own stupid actions..probably just out of embarrasment. "Oh! I slipped on the floor! Now i'm going to go sue McDonalds because their floor isn't the right style!!" ugh..I hate people like that.

Well, that's something I would have to agree with you on. People will do anything for money these days. If they have a chance of making money, they will go for it. The fact that he's probably not the smartest guy around wouldn't hurt either. I mean it doesn't take a genius to realise he's going to/he already did loose the case.

i suppose if i wanted i could sue a shop in which i hit a sign and the sign fell on my head because it's a danger to the public? :p

what i'm trying to say is that the sign wouldn't have fallen down if i hadn't hit it in the first place and if this person hadn't been eating from McDonalds all the time then he wouldn't be fat. :p

If the jury has any logic at all, then he wont, if thats the type of court he's going to. I forgot all the court structure knowledge that I knew. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong here about the jury.

Heheh, that reminds me of the wrapper for the Big Mac; '100% Australian Beef,' is actually a company.

lol.

And it's funny, because my Chili's has just started a new item called "Fried Cheese and Fries" for the kids' menus. Fat City. Gaw.

And it's even funnier because, as it has already been said constantly, as long as people have a desire for the green stuff and a scapegoat to pin their problem on anyone but themselves, this'll keep happening. "Oh, I just have no free will because I wasn't hugged enough as a child, bawl bawl." Gimme a break.

Maybe it's not the money so much as the notoriety they could claim. Hundreds of years from now, the law students will be studying US Gov't vs McDonalds, and shake their heads in wonder at the awful precedent it either set up or continued. People will do the stupidest things for fame, ill gotten or otherwise.

On a similar theme, did you hear about the girl who's trying to sue her parents because she claims that, not only is she ugly, it's her parents' fault (genes at work) for being so. Yeah, there's something you can control.

GAH!!!!!! How can people be so pathetic and weak?!?! Makes me wish i was a...rock!?!?!. then i could trip someone over and they would sue the Government for leaving rocks everywhere. People like that should be laughed out of courts. It is noit like somone told them too, or it is addictive. Sure junk-food is delicious. but EVERYONE knows (or should know) that it is fatty, greasy and bad for you- if you take it regularly. Two (junk-food) meals a week is plenty. Just give it a rest you greedy, pathetic people. Casesw like that should be kicked out of the courts. it is absolute rubbish. and GinnyLyn, are you sure about that genes thing... that just sounds a bit TOO pathetic. I reckon the world should be like OB. Ban any stupid people. Gah!

This is on of the dumbest lawsuit, people should be able to take responsiblity for themselves you don't get fat from one visit if you eat fast food everyday and don't work out or eat healthy of course you are going to get fat. This issue just annoys me so bad because I work at Burger King..
