Have u heard these guys play? They are amazing. John Petrucci, their guitarist, is so good. The drummer is amazing, too. Basically, the whole band is awesome. They ARE REALLY underrated. Metropolis PT 2, Scenes from a Memory is my fav album of theirs, even though i havent heard more than 2 of their albums. Did you know one of their songs (six degrees of inner turbulence) is 42 minutes long..... my fav songs are overture 1928, fatal tragedy, beyond this life, the dance of eternity, and home (and BTW, a few of these songs are in the DBZ vid, history of trunks.) If you ever get a chance, and if u like heavy metal, then listen to this band.

Heh. I had named John as my pick for best guitarist in that guitar duel thread. No one mentioned him other than myself, so I don't know if anyone else here is familiar with him.

I'm sure more people here know Dream Theater than is obvious, but they're not really the type of metal that seems to be popular around here with most people... Basically not noise for the sake of noise and tons of anger or whatever else. They're more of a technical metal group. If anyone here is familiar with Castlevania music (especially the guitar versions on Symphony of the Night), that's the kind of sound they go for. Lots of orchestration as well.

Six Degrees of Inner Turbulance takes up the entire second CD of the album (a 2 disc set, which is also called Six Degrees of Inner Turbulance). They have it split up into eight different tracks so you can skip around, but they aren't exactly segmented well. You really have to listen to the whole thing to get the full effect. I think Goodnight Kiss (part 5 of the song) is my favorite section of the track.

You should really check out Liquid Tension Experiment if you like Dream Theater.

PS - Dream Street disgusts me. I hope they are long dead heh.

I realize this is old, but I really think more people need to get into this band. Their songwriting ability is amazing, and almost unparalleled by current bands of their type. People have to have more to say about these guys than just this. This is pathetic lol.

Listen to the last several minutes of The Great Debate (it's a 13 minute song) and tell me that Petrucci isn't one of the best guitarists you've ever heard. You can't.

The Great Debate is a killer song. I have always liked the musical aspect of Dream Theater...actually I really used to like listening to them stoned back in my "Head" days.

I guess that my favorite song is "Hollow Years" of off Falling Into Infinity but all of the Albums of theirs that I have heard are pretty solid...

Head days? haha

I think Dream Theater is a turn off to the current crop of people into this sort of music... mostly because they gravitate to nu-metal garbage (although there are some good ones in there too).

When you play songs like Dream Theater's, most of which are well over six minutes long, people just don't want to bother. On top of this they make use of orchestration and all sorts of other stuff that kind of takes away from the "edge" it might have... but in my opinion just makes it so much better.

That and there isn't much in the way of vocals in a good deal of the songs.... and they don't have screaming and all sorts of other stuff. Just not what people want right now, I guess.

They're kind of like Tool in that sense. The fact that both bands can play such long songs, but you don't even realize it. The manages to stay fresh the whole way through and you just listen to it and enjoy it. Not many bands seem to be able to pull that off.

My buddy and I both think that bands like Tool and Dream Theater are very similar to Pink Floyd, more people will appreciate them 15 years from now. But I definatly agree with good ole Semjaza, check out Dream Theater, they are a really cool band with insane instrumentals.

I listened to the entire 42 minute song... it wasn't really much of a song, rather just 8 separate tracks that blended together on the ends. Though apparently one of the tracks was "reprised"... it still didn't feel like just one song.

But nonetheless it was really cool. I didn't like two of the parts, "War Inside my Head" and "The Test That Stumped Them All". I agree with Semjaza though, "Goodnight Kiss" was definitely the best section.

Overall I was impressed though. I'm guessing these guys aren't too popular? A shame.

I tried numerous times to get "The Great Debate" but never could. So I can't really judge just how good this John Petrucci guy is. I'll try some more later tonight.

On a slightly irrelevant note, I couldn't help but notice that when I searched for "Dream Theater", I brought up X JAPAN. With good reason - I think you guys should check X out if you like Dream Theater. They have a few songs that are definitely a metal and classical type mix, similar to Dream Theater. In particular, the half an hour "ART OF LIFE" should be heard if you're into long stuff with clever instrumentals. But I highly recommend you all listen to "ROSE OF PAIN" - a 12 minute masterpiece in my opinion. I'd take X's hide and PATA to John Petrucci anyday, judging from "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence" heh. "Silent Jealousy" and "kurenai" are also good picks if you want to hear more metal+classical from X, on the shorter side (both are around 7 minutes in length).

I'm glad you checked them out. That one long song can be divided up rather well... but at the same time, if you ever just play them by themselves it sounds odd. I guess just because they have slight tie togethers like you said.

Great Debate might not be the best example compared to others that slip my mind... but there is just some great playing on that song. The entire track is pretty solid, in my opinion.

If you ever look for their other CDs... They have ones that are basically set up just like that. One 30 or 40 minute song that's split up into sections. It's all good really.

I'll definitely have to check out X JAPAN. I'll wind up buying something of theirs if it's that comparable to Dream Theater (or just great by itself heh)... I can't stand the MP3 quality I get online.

Thanks for the heads up.

I got "The Great Debate", it sounded really cool. I love the beginning, sounds like something that could play during a movie related to that type of stuff (like GATTACA). Some of the middle, like that repetitious "life to save life", could get annoying... but generally it was pretty cool. These guys are really good... how many members does Dream Theater have?

But yeah, now that I've heard this song, I realize John is a great guitarist. That guy had a great solo in this song, fitting very well with the music. This guy really is one of the best guitarists I've ever heard... just from this one song mostly, heh.

I'll try checking out more of their songs. Some of their more "metal"-ish parts I don't care for, but much of the arrangement is very well done.

Well keep in mind, X JAPAN is OLD. This is early '90s stuff, and it's Japanese, so subtract 10 years anyway heh. The sound quality is not exactly great, even on my CDs. And in general, you don't find songs like this anymore, the vocals and style of guitars and such are considered "outdated" nowadays. Dream Theater is more modern, but kind of the same idea.

Dream Theater is a five piece band. In terms of the various orchestrated parts, I'd have to assume they get guests and such. It's honestly not something I've personally looked into, so I cannot give much of a history on it.

They've been around a decent amount of time. I forget when they got started exactly, but they had been playing around years before their first real CD was released... I think in '89. They were originally called Majesty, but they had to change their name to Dream Theater. As far as I know, only some demos were released under the name Majesty.

So they're not exactly a new thing. They have something like 15 albums out at this point.

As for the songs themselves... they can get a bit repetitive, but in general, I don't find it to be a problem. Also keep in mind, all the stuff mentioned so far is off Six Degrees of Inner Turbulance, which isn't considered their best.

Anyway, everyone should get into these guys :)
