A map?

I don't really know how viable this kind of thing would be... but I figure it could be kind of interesting...

Perhaps a "map" of the world, and if you clicked on a certain country or continent, or whatever, you could find out all the OB users from that particular area... Like, I'm from England, so when you clicked (hovered your mouse, or whatever it was that you had to do) on Britain, or England (whichever) my username would be in the list.

I'm not really sure what purpose it would serve, but I figure it would be kind of interesting to find a list of fellow Brits on OB. There's been lots of "meetings" on OB lately too, with cons or whatever... I know that it would be interesting to find out who lives near you.

What you're suggesting would be incredibly difficult to do, given the fact that we'd need someone to code something like this from the ground up...and to make it compatible with OtakuBoards' software.

It's possible that we could create a simple geographical list, but even then it would be difficult because few people actually write their true location in the Location field.

It's more a question of whether or not such a feature should be a priority for us. We are already paying a small programming team to work on theOtaku.com with us and we'll be working intensively to ensure that v7's features are all up and running properly.

So, while I can understand the desire for a feature like this, it's sort of difficult to implement right now. As I mentioned earlier, not a lot of people put their true location in the Location field, which would make such a feature relatively ineffective. So that's something we'd have to look at more closely if such a feature were to go ahead right now.

Well to get around the fact that not very many people use their real location on the boards (So far Baka is the only one in this thread who has ^_^), maybe there could be, for starters, a form that all new members have to fill out when they register that states their actual location. Okay, you can't really force them to, but it would give them the chance. From there, the current members could have the option to edit their profiles to include their actual location, in addition to the location they want to have displayed with their posts, if they so choose.

I wasn't really thinking of the technicalities when I posted this. Of course it would be hard to do, but I thought that I could just post this here so the idea would be floating around if someone more knowledgeable than me were to suddenly figure a way to do it.

A way past the "location" thing could possibly be a drop-down box rather than a field that you type in. Or possibly the timezone settings could be used to determine roughly where someone is.

I don't know, I'm just throwing ideas around here ^_^;;
