Semjaza
Ozma is a band I found out about thanks to my interest in The Vandals and their label, Kung Fu Records. Ozma started out as a Weezer cover band, and there are still many similiarities. The main one being the use of keyboards. However, I do think Ozma really has their own style and I personally prefer them to Weezer for whatever reason. The members of the band are surprisingly young (some younger than I am), but they are incredibly talented. They really pull off some excellent guitar work and it's obvious that they know quite a bit of styles. There are quite a bit of guitar solos because of this, along with the various keyboard parts. The percussion is solid and well placed. The highlight is probably the lyrics though. I've listened to most of what Ozma has done, and the writing is just excellent. I don't know how they can't appeal to anyone really. I must say that most of their songs involve love in some way, but it doesn't even bother me. There are references to videogames, the 80s and so many other things I have grown up with (hell they do a cover of the Tetris theme and sing about Link from Zelda and Legos). So to put it bluntly, they rock. I only own their two main releases on Kung Fu -- The Doubble Donkey Disc and Rock and Roll Part Three. Both are excellent. They both have their own strengths... The Doubble Donkey Disc is particularly cool because of its Russian theme. They recently released another CD I didn't get yet. I've heard it's not as good as they apparently tried too hard to mature or something. Shy owns it though, and he seems happy with it. Anyway, my personal favorite songs are Baseball, Landing of Yuri Gagarin, Shootingstars, Battlescars and The Ups and Downs. So anyone else?
Hey, I know that song, I didn't know it was Ozma that did it but I had been trying to figure it out. I have heard a few other songs but I wasn't really paying to much attention. Anyway, I'm interested and maybe I'll check them out.
Shy
Semjaza recommended this band to me a while ago, and just recently I bought their new CD. As you said, most of the lyrics are wonderful and very wel-written. I find it really refreshing to hear lyrics that actually mean something, since most modern bands completely disregard the importance of songwriting. They use the keyboards a lot in their new album, but I really don't mind. The keyboard gives them a pretty unique sound that I love. I haven't heard a lot of their previous stuff, but I'm definitely going to get their other CDs one of these days. According to their website they are having a concert in my area soon, so I'm thinking about going to that. It seems like it would be ufn, but I need to find someone else to tag along. Hm. Go buy Ozma CDs! -Shy
Semjaza
Olga... It's called Korobeneiki or something like that. It's on the Doubble Donkey Disc, if you're interested in finding it. I'd like to go to an Ozma show... They don't have a Chicago date on their site as of yet, but it has to be coming eventually. They seem to play mostly in California, as I think that's where they are based. At the very least, their label is.
