I was at the local Gamestop recently look for chrono trigger since I broke my last one also because of the buy 2 get one free deal, and noticed this game in the stack. I've heard some pretty good things about it it but I really don't know what it's about. Has anyone played it? I believe it's japanese name was like Dientshzu 2 or something, don't hold me to it though. It's for the SNES btw.

It's a very good game.

The Japanese name is Seiken Densetsu 2. Close enough heh. The first Seiken Densetsu was for Game Boy and was renamed Final Fantasy Adventure here to boost sales. That's being rereleased on GBA as Sword of Mana. Anyway, you didn't ask that, so eh lol.

If you see it used, I'd pick it up. It's not exactly easy to find anymore, especially at some place like Gamestop.

It's basically a real time RPG, although you can stop the action to get your character together. There are 3 characters, and you can play as any of them... the others will be computer controlled. The cool thing is that you can actually play 2 or 3 players with your friends if you want, it's a multiplayer game.

So yeah, I'd grab it assuming it's not $40 or something. How much are they asking?

I have this weird game, and I really just have to comment on the main character, whom I named Reuben (sp? Well, I looked in a dictionary when I spelled it in the game). Doesn't he look like a less cool version of Crono? He just seems more static, if that makes any sense...

Anyway, to answer your question, yes, it is worth getting. It is one of the few Squaresoft games I actually like. Then again, I think the best thing Square ever made was Bushido Blade and Chrono Trigger, so my opinion may not be important to you. The story's all a blur, but I just remember the
mana tree
and the ending, which was pretty depressing. :( Then again, I think I was fairly young when I beat it...

The game is ok, but in my personal and honest opinion (which I am allowed to have ;)), it's not one of my favorites. What annoyed me the most was how the characters following you could easily get stuck in a corner while you were trying to fight an enemy. Or how you could only have 4 of each item, and the prices for them were abominal. And the computer taking care of your other two people? *shakes head* Not for me. (This is part of the reason Kingdom Hearts irritated me so. I understand the reason why, but it still bugged me.)

Like I told Des on AIM last night, I prefer Legend to Secret, but I prefer several other games to either of these. That's just the way I am. :p

I have this game. It's a classic.

When I was like 6 years old, my oldest bro borrowed this game from a friend, and we all(as in my family) loved it. But my bro didn't get around to buying a copy for a while...

In fact, when my bro finally got around to picking it up, It was the very last copy in stock! Lucky him! (And me!:D)

Well, it's not a perfect 2-3 player game. The story is the top priority, so if you only have one character in your party, you can't play two+ players yet. One of you just has to play until you get another person on your team. Then, on the second player controller, press start or select (I'm pretty sure it was one of those buttons). There should be a little "2" icon that appears on top of the controlled character's face at the bottom of the screen.

When I first picked this copy up, I ahd to await to have an import disc to boot up the US copy, so therefore I completely forgot about it and it then began to collect dust up on my shelf.

Well when I remembered it's existence and began to play it I was to say the least... surprised. I wasn't expecting a Real Time RPG which shocked me a tad. I enjoyed the battle system very much though.

The only main dissapointment was the lack of customisation. I mean you choose a weapon and it's then fixed, I hate static parts in games, the ratings hit the floor then, however the ratings in my mind did begin to climb again.

In conclusion I'd say it's not my favourite Square game, however it is a classic and is worth purchasing to add to your library.

The battle system, by far, was the best part of both games. I especially liked the seperate animations for the stronger versions of each elemental spell you got. That's where the love for Secret stopped for me, though.

Legend lasted a lot longer. The music is wonderful! My little brother has started playing this game, and I can sit for minutes on end just listening the background music (especially the opening theme--I'm such a sucker for fine instrumental music). The animation is nice, the monster raising system is fun, and so is growing all those different types of plants in your backyard. Legend is very nonlinear, and is fun to play--but as a result, I got lost, bored, and even stuck! I had to quit because I no longer had any artifacts to place, nor could I find any to place. And the Mana Tree wasn't done growing, so the game wasn't done yet.

I just might go back and play Legend again. But Secret just rubs me the wrong way.

I had very, very few problems where characters got stuck. If they did, I'd address it. This is an SNES game. The fact that they did as much as they did was enough, and I can't expect perfect AI way back then.

There are many games that limit item pick up... I suppose just to make the game a bit more difficult and realistic. People can't carry 99 potions on their own. 9 of each would have been nice, though.

Legend of Mana was just a massive side quest game. It looked nice, it sounded nice... but there was nothing all that special about it in my opinion.

Secret of Mana is one of my favorite games! I got the game for my fifth birthday. I still got the game and the SNES, so I play that game once and a while. For me, it's always a good game to replay. Although, I did have a very good file but it got deleted because I tried to do a code I read from the Nintendo Power magazine. Boy did that go well. -_-;; And as luck would have it, the next issue said not to try the code because it would most likely delete your file. A little late at the warning if you ask me.

Anyway, I found something interesting on my first file. A weapon orb to level the weapon to level 9. I found it after defeating an enemy in the final dungeon. Not a boss, an enemy. I went through the dungeons a few more times and some more orbs for other weapons. Anyone else find the orbs?

Anyway, before I stopped playing it, I was powering up my characters with my sis, and we found an orb for the spear, which made it stronger than the sword. I was shocked, and (if I remember correctly) after you use the orb, you don't get anymore experience on the weapon, proving that it's the true last level. The only downside was that it didn't get an extra attack (you know, the one where you hold the attack button and the bar counts up 1-2-3-...8).

I found a few more, just like you, but I didn't get them all (if there is a final orb for all the weapons). I simply stopped playing it, but I was pretty powerful and should still have the memory in the game (unless the battery died).

I liked SoM for a while, that is until my 5th time thru and I got stuck at that blasted wall boss in Pandora. Heh I've never been able to beat him, never felt up to mass leveling up. Everyone says to keep using the earth spell but I keep running out of time before I can kill him (so he smushes me against the wall). I have weird problems w/ RPGs tho, I'm more likely to be stuck for an hour because I keep missing one door instead of on a boss, so it's strange. Another stupidly easy part I get stuck on EVERY time is the complete beginning. When the hero falls off the log and you have to get the sword. I keep wandering around forever, eventually I figure out to keep heading down despite the sword calling out. Hopefully next time I start it up I'll remember what to do =\.

He's smushing you? The only thing I can think of as to why he's smushing you is if you're killing its eyes. Kill eyes and he'll smush you, in other words. You don't have to attack the eyes. All you need to do is use Gnome's magic on that thing(his third eye?) between its eyes until it dies.

QUICKY MAN! BUY THE GAME! I loved SOM, and it's unnoficcial sequel by Square Hawaii SOE. I got to play SOM 3 and 4 even though they never made it to America cause my best friend's parent worked in the translation dept. there. I wish they would release them.
BTW, as long as you can get gnome magic up to level 3 the wall is cake, just go around umberlee's tempel area and keep fighting the little frog dudes hiding in the cave next to it with gnome then go into the tempel to refill your mp, fast and easy.

Secret of Mana has to be one of my all time favourite SNES games. My brother and I used to play it together all the time. Unless you're playing with someone else it's no fun to me. One of you is the boy and the other one is the sprite (you can be the girl but the sprite is better) and the team work you can do is awesome. We still haven't completed it though...we stopped playing it ages ago and now our SNES is one to the great game store in the sky *wipes away a tear*

I have to agree with Ginny though, it is amazingly annoying when one of you computer controlled characters get's stuck. In my experience it's best just to get them killed and then revive them when something important happens (they don't get stuck if they're a ghost following you around heh)

What made Secret of Mana and Seiken Densetsu 2 extremely fun was that my sister was playing. We both argued over who got to kill what and where to go, but I never went at it solo. The third character doesn't get stuck; it's me that gets stuck in between trees, houses, rivers... you name it, I've been dragged through there but my sister! ^^;; It's kind of of amusing though...

Anyway, this is OT, but I'm waiting for Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles to show up next February! It'll have multiplayer action! Whoo! I'm a sucker for multiplayer games. I think Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King has 2-players as well. *does the cabbagepatch dance*
