"American" anime?

I wasn't sure if this should've gone to the Music, Movies, etc. forum or here, so I posted it here. O_o

How do you feel about the shows that take some anime elements and mix them with american cartoons? To name one, Totally Spies (which is a horrible show, I might add) definately take anime style art and exressions. Teen Titans, too. When I first saw the previews for that, it reminded me of anime, and from what I heard, also used anime expressions. I guess...Jackie Chan Adventures uses some of the elements as well.

What do you think?

^_^ Just saying this only because of the artwork in the cartoons, not the plots or ideas. I'm saying this because I beleive even if Japan borrowed ideas, Japan also exaggerated the big eyes, small mouth, etc. and is more commonly known as Japanimation.

Surely, even if America started it, they're borrowing specific expressions and art-style that originated from the Japan animation.
Why does it have to be "Anime style" in "American cartoons?" There are lots of old American cartoons that have good plotlines, decent artwork, etc. What if it's the Japanese who are borrowing ideas?
Q.Asuka, I don't think maladjusted is trying to be politically correct. Simply, he wanted to express a methodology/style that he really could not say any other way than "anime style." Because he couldn't figure out another way to state this idea, he used a term that people would still understand. Personally, I think it's ridiculous how exact/perfect a person has to be in order to say something sometimes. We get the idea, and I think that should be all that a person is required to do.

Anyway, I think it's interesting to say the least. And yes, whenever I see the Teen Titans commercial, I just dislike the extent they try to mimic anime. Specifically, I'm referring to the high-pitched singing they have. That's just excessive... Anyway, I think it's a great thing because not only does this "blend" display a greater acceptance of world cultures, it will also "desensitize" future generations, so to speak. Haha, I wait for the day when I can play yugioh without mockery (ironically, by Magic TCG players)!

Thanks, AzureWolf....but, I'm a girl. O_O Lol, but I don't care. People always mistake me for a boy.

Anyways, I think that these shows are just the brginning of the whole thing. Japan isn't the only country that's going to supply us with anime, right? I mean, Korea and China definately have their share of anime. Another example os the Tokyopop Manga contest, and which they say that want to pursue the future of manga artists in the US, and I think it's a great idea.

But yeah, the shows that are adapting to this idea aren't doing a good job, in my opinion. Although, Samurai Jack is a show I really like.

Dammit maladjusted!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That stupid banner had me reading for like 10 minutes. For some reason i love that adult swim thing. Its like .........LOOK.......AT....ME........I'M.........HERE......[ADULT SWIM].......SWEET

For some reason thats entertaining.

*glances at topic*
of well as for that if you want to bring that up look at power puff girls. (glances at tikal, oh....)

How does Dexters Lab imitate anime? Just because they have big eyes?

besides anime kind of looks like micky mouse anyway. Some of you are saying that the big eyes mean japanimation. What about Disney characters?

Some shows though, i admit, do try and mimic anime. I can't name any right now but they exist. Just like cheese puffs.

Vegeta Rocker, if you'd read the the second post I wrote, I just answered all your questions. I never said the big eyes=anime, I said even if Japan took the big eyes, small mouth concept from America, (i.e. Mickey Mouse), they exaggerated it and is now more commonly known as anime. I am not trying to trash american cartoons here, I'm just saying these shows (i.e. Totally Spies, Teen Titans, Jackie Chan Adventures) borrow elements of animation made by the Japanese/Koreans/Chinese. You know, the sweatdrop, the vein, the blue lines, the agitated and surprised expression.

The only shows I mentioned were Totally Spies, Teen Titans, and Jackie Cahn Adventures. Jackie Chan Adventures...ok, this show doesn't use so much of the anime. But Totally Spies and Teen Titans specifically use the sweatdrop, vein, etc. These expressions were NOT used by american cartoonists. I can assure you of that.

I noticed that when american shows due try that, its never as mature or beutiful, or action packed as Japanese anime. Its like watching hello kitty with humans most of the time. The only descent one to me is Teen Titans. I think its kind of funny.

What about when American cartoons make direct references to anime? Like in the series finale of Reboot a couple years back. The episode where Mainfraim was crashing, there were several references to anime in it, one being the sprites clad in different colored sailor outfitts hudling around one holding a large glowing crystal and sporting Long blonde pigtails. Whats that remind you of? :D

*Laughs* I loved Reboot and I must say that that was one of the best moments of the show. It was the last thing I really expected to see, but it was classic.
I remember whe that show came out, way back when I was a little kid and it was on ABC saturday morning cartoons. It was entertaining for an 8 year old.

The last season, which took them like 5 or so years to come out with, was very good though. Had me glued to my seat.

This isn't specifically aimed at you, Double B...
There's a stereotype running around that says all anime are well thought-out, deep, and meaningful. Well, for all people who believe that, I have 2 words for you...

Tokyo Pig.

That said, I like the anime-style themes currently being used in some American shows. Teen Titans, for example, uses the famous facial expressions of anime, with the smooth animation more commonly found in America. And that's all it usually is, really. Facial stuff. Characters react facially like in an anime. Their faces are drawn more anime-like.

And half the time, with shows like Dexter's Lab or Poowerpuff Girls, the creators are just really big anime fans who like to throw in odes to their favorite anime. The guy made Dexter's Lab is obviously a fan of old school Mech anime.

I don't see how it matters. Animation is animation and everyone is inspired or interested in something else. They all take cues from eachother, and have for years.

I get the feeling that most people think American cartoons have to look like Hanna Barbara cartoons or they are ripping some other company off.

I think I like the idea of american animators mixing anime styles in with their cartoons. How else are obsessed anime-drawing freaks gonna get a job, eh? lol

Semjaza, I pretty much agree on everything, it's just something new to see american cartoonists trying to blend the two cultures. ...I'm sounding messed up. O_o

I think the person who made Samurai Jack is also the director of Dexter's Laboratory, and the creator himself said he was a huge fan of anime...

Ok...third time saying this...

I believe that anime was infulenced off of Walt Disney's cartoons, (i.e. Mickey Mouse) with the big eyes, small mouth design. I'm saying that in anime, the animators have exaggerated the designs, makind specific expressions and is now more commonly known as anime. The recent american cartoons, (i.e. Totally Spies, Teen Titans) are just trying to blend the anime style in! (using specific expressions that were created in anime)

The Japanese just took the early forms of Cartoon from America, added in their own two cents, and it became Anime. Then American Cartoons get influenced from anime, and add it into their cartoons. Its a mutual relationship which keeps on evolving and improving both sides. I say its a good one :D
