Actually, it's almost the opposite in terms of animation quality. The typical anime uses less frames of animation than the typical cartoon. If you watch a cartoon and anime back-to-back, you'll notice that the American (or Canadian) show is just a little smoother. Of course, you don't want to compare movies to TV series, because movies are always smoother than TV series. Try switching between Cartoon Network's Toonami and a Nickelodeon Nick Toon. Check it out.

Don't get me wrong. I find the art styles in anime more appealing, and Japanese animators are really good at doing scenes without actually animating anything (ie. a character having a conversation with their back to the "camera"). But truth be told, American shows have a better frame rate in their animation than anime.

Manic: Lol...I was watching this "The History of Anime" on the Animatrix DVD, and this man was talking about how Japanese animators knew how to 'cheat' their way into making the shows. I forogt how, though.

This got me thinking about DBZ, and how they ?cheat? in many of the fight scenes. Often in DBZ there is one set kicking and punching speed scene that is used over and over to fill time. The funny thing is, they tend to use the same scene in several consecutive episodes (especially in the Frieza saga)?

As far as you anime ?purists? go?anime has done as much harm as good; for example, any anime that ends in ?mon? :p

I have seen Teen Titans and it uses a lot of anime expressions. Like the anime crying and stuff. Totally Spys basicaly has the big anime art style eyes. Which I hate that show but anyway. Teen Titans isn't such a bad show.

You always got to remember a lot of anime used some of the american art styles. For instance the american squish sqaush like Eiichora Oda creator of One Piece and Romance Dawn used. And some of the japanese art styles used stuff from the old Disney movies. So the way I look at it americans can use some anime art style in their cartoons.

I wanted to put my 5cents worth.
American anime is just now comeing out after pokemon was a huge hit. And american cartoonist wanted to get in on the new mainstream, witch happend to be Japanese anime(short for animation)So now when we see new series of American cartoons, they start to look more and more like japanese anime. That would be my guess. I think mostly the cartoons that they are makeing (teentitans, spykids, batman beyond, etc.) are for more younger kids. PG,K,E stuff. I would say most anime is PG-14.

Ooooooooooooooooooooooooooohh, a lot of discussion is taking place! I like that. I agree. Even my little sister could tell the difference between the Anime and the American cartoons. To put it in a courteous way, American cartoons are great, but Anime has a side to it that is actually really appealing. This is why when I get older, I want to move to japan and become an Artist! Excuse me, sessha was getting a tad bit off topic. So, t.s.i.u., I really do not like the combination of the two art styles. Hee!

I got to catch Totally Spies yesterday (YES, your AL mod finally has cable. ^_^) and I thought it was the stupidest thing I ever saw. Sam was cute, but it was so FAKE! It didn't flow like true anime does. It was awful. I hope I never watch that show again.

hey QA, not to be rude n all, but does it accur to you that some girls actually act that way in real life(except for the spy thing...i think)? and that some people(like me) enjoy watching american cartoons that appeal to them more than PPG does?

and as for topic: i like the american cartoons w/ the anime style...and if you dont...you dont have to watch it...or complain about it...(i should take my own advise...):wow:

Queen Asuka is merely stating her opinion. Totally Spies may have girls that are true to teenager's personalities, but the way they show it and go through the show bores me. I think Totally Spies is a bad example of how animators borrow ideas from other animators. I beleive that Totally Spies used to be played on Fox Family, but the ratings were bad so Cartoon Network bought it. I'm not sure about it, though.

What about when American cartoons make direct references to anime? Like in the series finale of Reboot a couple years back. The episode where Mainfraim was crashing, there were several references to anime in it, one being the sprites clad in different colored sailor outfitts hudling around one holding a large glowing crystal and sporting Long blonde pigtails. Whats that remind you of? :D
Reeboot IS anime.

Anyway. Dexters Lab and Samurai Jack are made by the same person, he also directed the Power Puff Girls. That person (Gennedy Tartovasky) is a huge anime fan.

Totally Spies is anime style, but not that much. The charachter move all fast and the only anime style people are the girls.

Samurai Jack... Nuff said.

Teen Titans copies anime, and I love the show but it copies to much. I mean every 5 seconds theres an anime thing (look at episode 2) But then again that makes it like FLCL. Cool action, funny stuff, and lots of expressions.

Dexters Lab is usually extremely american but some times it can be very aime. I mean, in one episode dex is in Japan. And he blows up mount Fuji!

In Power Puff Girls there is much Japan like activity. In one episode they go to "Little Tokyo" to relax on a Saturday.

*Laughs* I didn't mean their personalities were fake! I was meaning that the animation looked really fake. You could tell it's just imitating the true anime style. I don't doubt that real teenagers act like that. Why do you think I'm grateful I wasn't a part of that crowd? Of course, it's awesome here at UGA. So yeah...sorry for the misunderstanding.

And hey, the Powerpuff Girls ROCK! *Hugs her big poster in her room*

First of all...the definition of "anime" is Japanese animation...or in other words...cartoons that originated in Japan or were drawn by Japanese people...so...if a cartoon was created by American animators and artists in America...it wouldn't technically be "anime"...it'd be nothing more but an imitation...but you guys are right though...people take elements from anime and add them to their own works...the way I look at it...it's just culture blending...

Second of all...the Japanese did copy off of American cartoons...Dr. Osamu Tezuka...(creator of anime)...created Astro Boy...(first anime ever)...by copying styles drawn by Walt Disney...that's why the really early anime look a lot like a Disney cartoon...and ever since that...anime has evolved...take a look at Astro Boy which was released in the fifties...then look at Lupin the 3rd which was released in the seventies...then look at Cowboy Bebop which was released in the nineties...yeah...animator's have gotten a lot better...

I find it funny when some elitists talk about how anime and american animation shouldn't mix, but have no problem with shows like Astroboy or Big O.

Anyway, Totally Spies probably would've been more popular if it came out around the time Clueless was popular. Unfortunately, the makers of this 'toon were like so last century.

I'm late to the topic.

Anyway, here goes some explaining. Now the americans can create cartoons that have japanese looks. Considering before aniem was about, they had the old Tom and Jerry Squish-Squash style. That was released in american long time ago. Now there came alons some Japanese person name Osamu Tezuka who used that style, and he american disney "cartoon-ish" style. I'm sure he was not the first anime, and manga creator, in fact I know. But he used an american style.

The americans had nothing against that, they were glad that other people were watching there stuff. Now this took place a little after World War II ended. So the americans and Japanese became friends again. Now that they were friends they agreed to use the styles of art that each other used. The americans didn't use the japanese anime style until recently. For instance some cartoons like Totaly Spies, or Teen Titans. The Expressions are anime like.

I feel that it's good that two countries can share togethar there own kind of artwork. And we don't have to call it American Anime, becuase it's just a different style. Anime, which is a japanese word, how could the american suse American anime when anime is japanese. Therefor it would not be called American Anime. It's just the Japanese stle of cartooning, that is all.

Now cam along Eiichora Oda who created Romance Dawn and One Piece, a manga that airs in Shonen Jump. When he was a kid he always watched Tom and Jerry. He liked the style of art, the Squish-Squash therefor he used that to make his own animes and mangas. I am still so happy that different countries can use there other kind of art style. That is my super long opinion.

:D I remember that one! That was hilarious. Reboot was the best while it was on.
