Future of Zelda

I was just thinking...(and very bored), what do you think will happen to Zelda in the future? I mean, I really like the cell-shaded graphics on Windwaker, but I liked the grahics in the small excerpt that Gamecube showed at that....place. O_o...Was it E3? I'm not sure. Sorry, I sound confuzzled.

And more so, what do you think will happen to the plots? Do you like the continuous Link vs. Gannondorf and the dungeons? Heh...I wonder how long the Zelda series is really going to last...

One thing's for sure--Zelda's been around for almost, what 15+ years now? If people can keep falling for the game of a fat plumber who jumps around a lot, then there will always be a future for the Legend of Zelda.

So speaks me. ^_~

As much as I like the cel-shaded style, it's unlikely that Nintendo will continue to utilize it forever -- at some point, the style will change again. It might be with the next game, or it might be with the game after that. Who knows.

It largely depends on who is responsible for directing new iterations in the series. Shigeru Miyamoto no longer directs games, but instead, he acts as a producer. So he still has input with the Zelda series (as well as many other franchises, including third party games), but it's the director who will really craft the specifics.

It seems that Aonuma (the guy who did MM and TWW) has a pretty good track record so far. Majora's Mask was an excellent twist on the series. The Wind Waker's fresh style and much improved fighting engine were also big plusses. Of course, I have my problems with TWW, in the sense that I think some elements were rushed. But overall, Aonuma has done a good job. And I think he understands the franchise.

So, Zelda is in good hands. It's still a strong seller and it's still one of the most respected franchises in the entire industry.

In terms of visual changes in the future...I don't know. I doubt that Nintendo will ever go "photo realistic" with it, because that's never been an essential part of Zelda. You can bet that Nintendo have some great plans for the future, though. ^_^

Just a little note to add, Miyamoto and Aonuma said in an EGM interview, that if they went with older Link in the next Zelda game, that they would definetely have to change the graphical style, because it wouldn't fit with older Link.

Oh, right! I just rmemebered this. I saw how Link was designed in Soul Caliber II, and I thought it was pretty nice. Maybe that's how Nintendo will go with it in the next game if older Link is in it.

Well, I've heard that the next game is going to be a sequal to TWW and use the same graphics and character models and stuff, much as MM was to OOT. But on the game after that, who knows....

Personally, I'd like them to keep the cel shaded graphics, but change the style of the characters. (Sort of a cross between the completely cartoony look and the more realistic look). I think it would be absolutely wonderful if they could do a cel shaded Link and make him look similar to the art for A Link to the Past and Link's Awakening. So more realistic that the style of TWW, but still cartoony. Maybe that would stop people whining about it looking "kiddie," also.

As for what will actually happen with the graphics, who can tell? I kind of doubt even Nintendo has plans for a game beyond the TWW sequal at this point, though who knows.

As for what will happen to the Zelda series, I don't see it going anywhere anytime soon. Like James said, it's still one of the best-selling and most respected series, even after 15 years. (In the US, the original LOZ was actually released in this same month in 1987). So it's hard to say when, if ever, Nintendo will stop making Zelda games. Personally, I hope they'll keep making them as long as they can keep them as new and fresh as the series has been so far. There's always been some sort of twist in each one that makes you feel like you're playing almost a whole new game, yet at the same time makes it feel familiar and comfortable, and I love that.

Hm.. I believe that Miyamoto and his crew will continue coming up with new, innovative concepts for Zelda.

I don't think that they're gonna stick with the cel-shading... That is, if they listened to the thousands of angered realistic-Zelda fans.

But I think it would be cool if you would go through a new Zelda game in realistic fashion, then you unlock a cel-shaded version after you finish the game. But that would probably take a lot of space on a CD.. Maybe 2 seperate versions would be better, if they go along with my crazy, dumb idea.

I still dream of the days of holodecks. Of the far off future days where video games will be considered exercise in their own right for both mind AND body, because there will be holodecks and yes, we shall jump, run, slash, yes!

Heh, oops...got carried away there. ^-^ Not a feasible near future idea, but still one I hope for for one of these decades to come. Would that not just be the best for the Zelda series? *grin*
