The Ring is definetly a good one..in fact its 5 AM here and now I don't wanna go to bed. thanks guys. When I saw signs in the theater (more of a thriller) I was freaked out when I got home that night...my roomate was out of town and my bathroom floor creaked as I walked by in the hall and I nearly severed the door in reflex.

Anyone seen 28 Days Later? Its pretty good...very Resident Evil, but a different twist on the concept thats kinda nice, that movie has been giving on and off trouble sleeping for 3 weeks. but I always have that problem.

zombies in general freak me out.......so I'd say...

#1 for long lasting creepy scare

The Ring

#2 for shorterm scare
Signs

#3 for wierd term scare
28 Days Later

Actually, the opening to The Ring's DVD menu scares me more than the actual movie. lol

I must admit, The Ring had no effect on me when I saw it the second time. It's really a movie that you have to see once...and in the cinema. If you don't watch it in the cinema, you'll never really get the full impact.

It's hard to say that Ring/The Ring is actually 'scary' for me. I mean, I use that word...but it's not really right. It's unnerving. It's a movie that made my skin crawl. So it's like Silent Hill in that regard. But it's definitely not something that actually "scares" me, or gives me nightmares.

The same can be said for most movies. There are few that I actually find really terrifying. I mostly enjoy horror movies simply because I like to watch them for the first time...and be surprised by what they offer. The Ring is a movie that will scare you if you don't know what to expect. Or at least, it'll surprise you.

I actually liked Ring 2 more than Ring. It was just more in-depth. A lot of reviewers said that it was trying to do too much at once. But most of those movie critics are incredibly cynical -- they will criticize a movie into the ground and won't just sit and enjoy what it offers. I think it's possible to overanalyze a movie sometimes. lol

Signs is interesting. I didn't find it scary at all. In fact, I hated the ending. Here they are...the world being invaded by aliens...and the story revolves around a guy who finds his faith again. To me, that just seems very jarring. It's almost like they totally ignore that an alien invasion is occuring toward the end of the movie. I just felt very underwhelmed. And I didn't really find it scary in any sense.

Having said all of the above, Ring/The Ring are movies that left me the most "unnerved" for the longest time. I think I was feeling weird for a few days after seeing them. lol

Has anyone seen Jeepers Creepers? If you want a funny horror movie, look no further. ~_^

Jeepers Creepers is awful.

I saw 28 Days Later last night. I don't know how scary it is, but I really liked it. It makes excellent use of complete silence at the best times. You also have almost absolutely no idea when something is going to attack, so it works to good effect.

As for Signs. God, I hated that movie with a passion. I was dragged to it against my will, although I thought it looked decent at the time.

The whole idea of it was so moronic. Now people have told me "You shouldn't think so much," but I'm sorry. The advertisements, the director and nearly every critic that liked it seemed to emphasize how intelligent and original it was. It wasn't either of those things.
Firstly, the damn things aren't even scary. Throughout the whole film you mostly just hear about stuff they do. Until the ending, the only things you actually see is one walking by a group of kids and staring into a camera --- SCARY!; one running around and climbing houses -- almost wet my pants!; and one that can't even figure out how to open a door -- heart attaaaack! Give me a break.

Now, obviously these things are intelligent. First of all, they are able to come all the way to Earth in the first place. Second of all, they know how to cloak their ships (the bird hitting the invisible ship was actually a cool scene). They do a few other things that obviously puts them on a level above us in pure scientific intelligence.

However, they are allergic to water. Why would they ever come to a planet mostly covered in water then? A planet where it rains constantly. A planet where there is moisture in the air all around us... and lastly, why in the world would they harvest creatures that are mostly made of water? It's so damn illogical to me.

People have asked me how the aliens would even know. Seriously, we know what Mars is made of. Same with Pluto, and nothing has ever even been near there. At the very least, they are logical hypotheses. Now, you're telling me that these aliens, with the knowledge of intergalactic time travel, have absolutely no clue about this?

It's the equivalent of one of us going to Mars without a spacesuit and being surprised when we die.

At the same time, I suppose you could say they were desperate. The movie obviously alludes to this. They are harvesting because they have worn out the natural resources of their own planet.

The funny thing is that anyone I tell this to can't even come up with this answer on their own. It winds up being something I say in the end, because that's the only thing that makes the movie plausable. It's kind of sad that an "intelligent" movie doesn't even make people think.

Even without all that, I just think it's a poor movie. The main problem being that it holds your hand the entire time through. I was bombarded with "everything happens for a reason" through the entire film. Every two seconds, there was water somewhere. Constant camera focuses on glasses full of water. Everything happens for a reason! More water! Reasons!! Water!! Gah.

Then finally it's rather convenient that the entire house is just FULL TO THE BRIM with glasses of water.

This is only one example of that, but the movie does it a lot. It constantly shows you stuff because it thinks average people cannot think of it on their own. I felt like the movie was patronizing me.
I could go on and on, but that's enough. I thought this movie sucked, plain and simple. I had to get all that out heh.

I walked out of the place thinking it was halfway decent... The buzz of seeing a new movie was still on me, but it was wearing off. I didn't have time to form an opinion since I was paying attention to it.

However, on the way to the car, when I actually thought about what the movie was trying to get across, I realized how damn stupid and insulting to my intelligence it was.

I couldn't even stand half the cinematography either.

One of the most overrated films I've ever seen in my life.

I respect your opinion but have to disagree.

Signs is a great mvoie BECAUSE of the cinemtography, because of the plot not being about aliens...but a mans struggle with his faith and his family..in a time of crisis. YEs the alien is retarded looking hwen you finally see it...and the swing away thing was terrible...but otherwise..its an awesomely intense and suspenseful film the first time you see it.

BTW M. Night Shamylan is working on another film now called The Woods

Supposed to be a early 1900's era piece about woodland spirits....should be good

Tho some of the rumored casting has me bummed out

Yay. I'm happy you were cool about disagreeing heh. Anyway...
Except for the fact that the whole faith and family thing was poorly done and incredibly tired. My wife was taken from me. I hate god for forsaking me. That's what it amounts to. How many films must I see that deal with this same idea? Hell, quite a few even use the whole priest angle. The stuff with his brother and the kids really didn't do much for me either.
When this isn't done well, I really have to fall back on the driving force of the film... which is the aliens themselves. They may not be the true focus of what the film wants to get across, but they do propel and further the plot. Without them, none of the family's problems would even be an issue.

And again, the idea of "everything happening for a reason" applies here. It's beaten into you on several occasions, and this is another example. I referred to this in the other post, although I didn't outright say it.

It just didn't do anything for me. I have no real problem with others liking it. Most people don't like what I do as it is heh.

I really didn't like the cinematography whatsoever. That's a personal opinion though, and I understand why some would.

I'm not saying it is a bad movie, but with the hype around it... it was incredibly underwhelming and overrrated. I'd probably call it average if I had to actually rate it lol. 7/10 or some nonsense.

I have to agree with Semjaza basically. His reasons are the same as mine, when it comes to Signs.

It wasn't a terrible movie or anything close. But it definitely wasn't what people made out early on.

I saw The Ring and Ringu what freaked me out the most was the tapes music in the U.S version. That screeching sound I would hear it in my sleep. Those are the only horror movies that ever freaked me out I guess it's because I hate the fact that a ghost can hurt you but you can't hurt a ghost.

The Eye was pretty good. I can't really judge it's scariness factor because I don't scare easily. But if I were to scare, that'd be a really scary movie. I jumped a few times... I hope no one noticed!
