wrist cutter
There are many problems not just in America but in the world right now... poverty, war, hippies, etc. But I think it's time we turn our attention away from these things and towards one of America's biggest issues right now - racist hurricane names. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas is one of the few brave enough to address this problem, stating that hurricanes should reflect the names of African Americans and other ethnic groups, and that the current names are too "lily white". Suggested names were Keisha, Jamal and Deshawn. For a full article, click here. What are your thoughts on this subject? What is the solution to this troublesome issue? Will Vanilla Coke ever come back? I personally think President Bush should stop focusing on war in and rebuilding Iraq, and focus on the real issue here: racist weathermen.
instantramen14
:twitch::twitch::twitch: Does it really matter, theyre just hurricanes!! Transtic Nerve
Don't forget the horror that Hurricane Shaquila brought upon us... Well, we shouldn't leave out the Asians, Hispanics, Muslims and Native Americans either.... All we need is Hurricane Ho, Hurricane Valasquez, Hurricane Mohammed, and Hurricane Running Bull. Guest Crimson Spider
Um... why would anyone even think of this? I just dismissed it as a name, and soon forgot about the whole hurricane hitting. I don't pay attention to if it is of any specific race or not. That would be pointless and time-consuming. Well, not time-consuming, but worhtless to remember. Looks to me like some people just want to bit . . . complain about something and they just picked that. Would you believe that that one guy still wants to tax the white people and pay it to the black people? Another pointless thing.
PiroMunkie
That is one of the most ridiculous articles I have ever read. A hurricane is a violent, destructive force of nature, and someone is upset that their race is not represented in the names of hurricanes? A race that is already stereotyped to be violent with gangs and such? They should be happy that hurricanes seem to only be named after the 'white man', lol. I am all for equal rights, but I do not think this really qualifies to be an equal rights issue in my book. This more of a "Lets find something to complain and nit-pick about just because I think this is unfair" issue. Heck, it is not even an issue. It is a freaking hurricane. I doubt many people actually care about them except those who have to deal with them.
Justin
I wanted to toss in my piece of sarcastic humor here, but I find myself unable. The only relevant thing I have to say now is this joke: An African American woman is in a room arguing with a caucasian man. She screams "The white man is holdin us down!" So an innocent bystander(who is a white male) overhears this, and politely approaches the woman, saying "Lady, I have no money, no car; my wife and kids jut left me. I can't even hold down a job...let alone a whole race of people!" *bows* -Justin
Heaven's Cloud
The funny thing is, as soon as hurricane "Deshawn" came around and ended up being the most distructive hurricane ever, Rep Shelia Jackson Lee would claim that the name was racist because they only used an "ethnic" name because it was an uncommonly violent hurricane...therefore creating the assumption that all people of ethnicity are violent. PiroMunkie
How about they call the next one Hurricane Micheal Jackson? Everyone wins! Yes, I do think that is a good idea. Start naming after the infamous. It is more fun that way. =P

Guest Taylor Hewitt
Funny one Justin. You're funny. All I have to say is that maybe they should just name the damn hurricane after some person and make them happy. It's not a big deal really. Harry
I think this is a great idea. Black people are being oppressed all the time in AmeriKKKa so this is one more step towards equality. I also think we should give every black person 1000 dollars because of their pain and tax the whites more heavily. Did I mention Bush stole the election? Chichiri's Girl
How the heck did he steal the election?!? Okay see, people vote for who they want right/ Yeah and then the person with the most votes wins. You can't "steal" an a election. Even if ya could what the heck dose THAT have to do with namin freakin hurricans?!? Oh and how are the African Americans of America being opperessed?! Why should they each have a 1000 dollars? Because their grat ancestors were slaves?! Look Harrry I got news for you African Americans weren't the only slaves in history. Ever since wars started the captives have either been killed or enslaved. True African slavery is most talked about but its not thee only one! If they aren't happy in "AmeriKKKa" then why don't they go back to Africa?! Okay well the steam is gone I'm okay now sorry if I affened any one. Gomen
LOL, you obviously aren't very good at noticing a little thing we like to call "sarcasm".... This has been quite possibly the funniest thing I've seen here on OB in a long long time. And I'm not tlaking about the stupid black politician either. PS: Bush didn't have the most votes by the people, just the electoral college, and he is refering to the acusation that Jeb Bush, governer of the state of Florida, the same Florida who screwed everythign up, may have had a part in the counting, or lack there of, of the votes. Juu
Gah... Semjaza
The Oreo issue was a big enough deal to get companies to actually start labeling their products with a statistic on the amount of transfat in them. I still think people are really underestimating the problems with that stuff... and still don't seem to get the point that the guy did the lawsuit only to bring attention to the problem. The lawyer even right out said it once it got national attention. Otherwise, this thread gives me a headache. Even if we just gave storms numbers instead of names, someone would find something to complain about. I don't know how these people get elected anymore. I don't really know how saying something like "lily white" really makes this lady sound interested in equality in general anyway. If I came up with some stereotypical African name that I got off that TV show roots, fifty people would jump on my back. There are hurricanes with names I've never even heard of. There are far more important racial issues than this. This lady just wants attention.

Yu Yu Hakusho!
You know, I agree, a lot of people, black, white, pink, purple, whatever have been treated poorly in every country. It isn't just the "evil white men" that do everything...no matter how much you want to believe it. To tell you the truth, blacks and whites get along pretty damn well around here and no one is treated like an "animal" around where I live. Maybe it's different where you are from. But do I have to start licking the bottoms of people's shoes or something just because I'm white to let them know that I don't care what the heck they look like? How soon we forget the wonderful orange people up on the moon that we mean, horrible, white people drove up there. James
I agree with Semji. If we started to name hurricanes after minorities, it would be considered racist against those groups. Even if it's true that hurricaines are mostly named after "white people", I'd have to ask why that even matters. I certainly haven't lost any sleep over hurricaine naming. Normally they seem to choose the most boring name they can find and then slap it on a hurricaine. I doubt that much thought goes into the naming process. *puts on a gas mask as sarcasm fills the room, making the air too thick to breathe*
twixy
there should be a hurricane named after me.....maybe we should take a capitalistic nature on the whole thing and let people buy the right to name them after themselves...like a star. >.o
Baron Samedi
Well. I am glad that someone mentioned this whole thread was one big dose of lethal sarcasm. Coz i was pretty sure you guys would pick up on it.... the starting post was loaded to the gunwales with it (sarcasm). very humorous though.... speaking of that i have seen a site claiming that, at the current rate, 'white' people will be wiped out in a coupla hundred years. So then the..... 'other' people can have all the fun ^_^ yayz. I would give it URL but it is kinda bordering on white supremist so it may offend. Was an interesting article though.
