Doukeshi
Well, before I go to work here's my two cents as it were. Equal does not mean better and people seem to forget that. However, I do believe that women are slowly becoming the more dominant of the species. I'm trying to prove a trend considering many many years ago women used to be on top, then along came something to knock them down in society (my theory is it's the bible, but correct me if I'm wrong), thus making men on top. Now women are making their way back up. This in turn will be replaced by men once more etc etc etc. Anyway, that's the sociological study I want to conduct. I'll edit this somemore when I get back from work.
Manic Webb
I think men and women were created to correspond to each other. They're two sides of the same coin. They complete one another. Women have the egg, men have the fertilizer. Men are generally stronger than women, but women have a generally higher tolerence for pain. This is why an average woman needs a man to open a pickle jar, and an average man could never hope to survive the pain of childbirth. There are certain things one can do that the other can't. Of course, there are always exceptions to the rule. In fact, it's not even a rule. This stuff is pounded into our heads partially by inherent traits and organized religion/society. We can rebel against them anytime we want. Society became male-dominated because of religion. Religion teaches us how to treach the opposite sex. Some of the most popular religions today teach women to be subservient, and men to be dominant. Because this is written as religious law, people learn to follow it. They may not accept it, and that's when they rebel against it. Ancient Sumerian culture, on the other hand, treated the average woman like a treasure. Their beliefs called for women to be respected in some ways. If the Gods created all life on Earth, then women must be godly because they too can create life. But still, certain inherent traits call for women and men to instinctively be treated differently. Men are usually stronger, so they go out and hunt dangerous animals. Women have higher endurance, so they gather things for endless hours. No sex is better than the other. Society might teach us one thing, but we, as individuals, rarely fit into the categories and ideas mentioned above. This is because we have choice, and exceptions. So what am I trying to say? It's an individual thing. Once you get past the stereotypes, whether or not you treat a person of the opposite sex as an equal really just depends on the person they are, not the sex on their birth certificate. Lady Asphyxia
I suppose I'm a feminist. I don't really care about protesting or anything [there's no real point -- it's almost equal anyway], but I do feel a burst of outrage whenever I read the history books, in particular the ones where they describe women as 'chattel'. It's my belief that men and women are equal. Men do one thing, women do another that's just as hard. Although, I did read a magazine that said women feel pain more acutely, but are more stioc about it, and are given more...dainty?...painkillers. But then again, I think it was "New Idea", so I wouldn't trust that completely.[Heh. Fun fact that distracted myself.]
Ravenstorture
Originally posted by Baron Samedi my mum is so feminist, i dont think i have achoice.
I'd tend to disagree with a statement like that, but I know how you feel. My mother is one of the biggest feminists I know - and of course, being a feminist, she attracts a lot of them, in discussion groups, freinds etc... so basically I've seen a lot of feminists, but my mother is definately a prominant figure. For example, I'm only sixteen and 3/4, but she moved out of home a month and a half ago to Canberra to work at a woman's shelter, and do her honours on women and alcoholism. So now I'm on my own, but I respect her for having a life of her own. Allow me to talk about my mother some more: My grandparents, her parents, are very conservative. They really disapprove of her having a life outside of the one they think she is meant to have - basically, staying at home, pleasing the husband and bringing me up. They hate the fact that there is no husband, and they hate the fact that she has done so well in bringing me up despite doing thousands of other things at the same time. She's a dancer, an artist, a nurse, an archeologist, and anything else she decided it would be good to do. My mother perhaps is a feminist because her parents raised her to believe she was inferior to men. They still believe it. I got lectured by grandad the other day because I decided to accept the role of senior sergeant in my cadet unit. Anyway, I've been raised by a feminist and she's been smart enough to not teach me what she knows as the truth, but what she sees as the truth. I know I need to decide for myself, and so far I've done a good job on forming my own opinions about the world. Feminism arose because of the dominance of men, but these days I have a feeling feminism is taking a wrong turn. The way many people go about feminism is too heavy, as if it were to tip the scale too much in women's favour. And sure, some will say we deserve that, at least for a little while. But equality is so important, and we are battling against hundreds of years of inbuilt knowledge. It is getting better, but it will be a while before people can think sensibly about race and gender and religion and general difference, and form their own opinions independantly from their education. EDIT: And now, a note from the famed woman, just what this thread needs, a message from a professional, experienced feminist: Good love, Tell your loutish friends that intellectually insightful men are feminists too! Feminism doesn't mean women are better, or even the same - it says that that which we have associate with feminine has been devalued along with women themselves. that is why so many more men are mentally ill, substance abusers, committing society, dying of heart attacks, starting wars, abandoning children, families and responsibilities for their cars, computers and corporations. Feminine values need freedom from oppression. Tell them to **** off and hug a tree.
Tw34kY
ok we should be equal. but girls are all different. some are winey little bitches if there damn mocha aint right. but alot of girls are nice and wont be a jackass and stuff. and if everyone thinks woman are smarter then men then why is the smartest peron in the world a MAN. i can understand that a majority of woman are smarter then men but they have an advantage because men get peer pressuered into stuff that makes them stupid and run there life into the ground. 1. smoking weed. ok alot of guys get peer pressured into it. woman can simply walk away from it. and alot of insances wehre men do weed theyre grades fall derasticly ill add more later but i have to leave
Guest Crimson Spider
Originally posted by Tw34kY some are winey little bitches if there damn mocha aint right.
Heck yeah! Back on topic Different. Not equal at all. Wanna know why guys are generally stronger than girls? It is because the male body past puberty is 50% muscle. Nothing else. A womans is only about 25%. A very clear distance. Wanna know why most girls are smarter than guys? It is because girls basically have more instinct. They know a lot of things that guys would normally have to learn the hard way. And since Estrogen doesn't give the woman the need to be strong, or competitive, like testosterone does, they actually think more. It is basically a smarter chemical. While its counterpart is more for strength and agression. That is why a guy can never understand a woman. Our minds aren't built to do that kind of thinking. All feminism is is a classification of how a woman is supposed to behave. Just like high-school stereotyping. A label on personality. Supposidly, guys aren't supposed to go into this "Behavior" and girls aren't supposed to leave it. Screw them. Act how you want to. The reason why men want to feel dominant is because of that magic little chemical our little best friend makes makes us want to be on top. Want to be the best. And unfortunatly, wants to put down the competition. Any competition. When we lose, we try to earn our pride back. So women didn't get rights for 2 reasons. 1)Because guys feel that they need to be better. And 2)Because women didn't say anything for so long. Now they have righs, because they thought about it, then fought for them.

Guest spiderham
There may never be complete equality between anyone there have always and problaby always will be some form of discrimination and another thing why aren't women in the draft? if the feminists want equality then ask to be drafted during wars
Manic Webb
Actually, I think American women did start fighting for the right to be drafted a few decades ago. When I filled out my selective service card, there was a checkbox for gender. Women aren't required to sign up for the draft, and I think the military disregards female draft forms sent in. Tw34kY, there are girls who smoke weed, too. Guys just get caught more often.

Heaven's Cloud
I base all of my feminist view points on a short comedy sketch by George Carlin. I am all for total equality between men and women; and I think that, throughout the centuries, men have caused horrible atrocities. However, if you are a feminist and truly believe in feminist ideals, then I hate to tell you that you aren't aiding your cause by becoming a part of corprate America or working for Ms. Magazine. If entering the evil corparate entity created by us sexist males is the most noble cause that you women can apply yourselves to, well welcome to the club :p
