What was your hardest NES game?

I was just wondering what everyone?s hardest NES game was to beat and why.

Mine would have to be this game called Werewolf. It was probably one of the hardest games I ever played at the time. This one level I can't remember which number. It was a waterfall stage and some of the jumps where insanely hard you had to jump from log to log as they fell over the waterfall and the enemies would blast you every time you jumped. By the time you got to the boss at the end you had hardly any life left. I was thinking of digging it out and trying it again being I am much better at games nowadays.

Most of the hardest games were hard because they made no sense. I still have no clue if I even made any progress in the horrible Super Pitfall.

Snake Rattle n' Roll's last stage was ridiculous too. The rest of the game was hard, but I could manage. The last level was just one monster and tons of things that could kill you on a very small platform. You had to hit it without stopping for seemingly hours. I always just gave up.

The hardest SNES game to me was Star Fox. I never beat the game on its hardest stage level. It was crazy on the last stage you always had one fox left and all your friends are dead and the final boss is so far away; if you were lucky you would see the last boss in the distance. I've never seen it before close up.

Gah... I still have my NES lying around somewhere O_o

Super Mario Bros. 3 - Without contest. Well... maybe Tetris was hard too... I swear, my mother was better on the NES than I was O_o

Then again, I'm not in a position to talk. I've completed very few games in my whole "career" O_o;;

On a more related note, one of the most difficult games I've played would have to be Gradius III. The later levels get completely crazy...and you can't really "continue" in the game, nor can you save. So you just have to rely on your patience and skill. Very tough.

Gradius IV is similar. Even the first couple of levels are really hard going. You immediately realize that there's nothing safe about these games...you're always dodging a thousand projectiles and you're never being given much breathing room.

So it requires constant mental concentration.

As far as other games go, my most recent "tough" game would be Metroid Prime. Remember, in the PAL version, the game's default difficulty is "hard". So...play the US version in hard and you'll know how it is.

For the most part it hasn't been too taxing, but it's certainly the most difficult GameCube game I have played so far. I'm up to the Omega Pirate...and I'm still having difficulty with him. I'll beat him eventually, but for now, it's fun to face that kind of challenge.

Well, I really haven't played too many NES games, since I didn't start gaming much until the SNES/Genesis era. I remember wondering how anyone could possibly manage to beat the original Super Mario Bros., but I was pretty young and not very good. So I guess that would probably be the hardest NES game I've played much.

Heh, I also remember playing the original Metroid and having a really hard time. When I played it as a connection bonus in Metroid Prime, though, it was so much easier. Especially since I already knew where the Varia and Ice Beam were. Heck, with the Varia, you can actually fall in lava and jump out before you lose any energy. ^_^

If you think Metroid is hard, I think Metroid II will simply own you.

It does have some things over the original. It seems a bit more coherant because the Gameboy was capable of a bit more detail (although at less colors).

That's about it though. The world is bigger, and you still have no map. Monsters just seemed harder, weapons and energy in lower supply... plus you had the various Metroid mutations that you had to hunt down. It was required.

Somehow I managed to finish it though. Maybe it's just because I haven't played it since I was a kid, but I swear it's the hardest Metroid game I've ever played.

Out of all the games I owned before I lost my NES, I could never beat Bart vs. The Space Mutants. Maybe 'cause I was too young at the time to figure out how to beat level 4. How do you kill that dinosaur, anyway? lol

I can conquer Tetris and Mario...but not that. I'll have to come back to it someday.

Well, the original Metroid was hard. Like I said, it was a whole lot easier when I played it on Metroid Prime, though. I imagine Metroid II can't be that much harder than the original, to give me a lot of trouble now.

And about not having a map, I pretty much just said screw that while playing the original and used the maps in an old issue of Nintendo Power. (Which I'll also be doing if I can ever get a copy of Metroid II). Sure, I could do it without a map, but it's just so dang annoying without one right at first. I mean, after I've played for a while I have no problem--heck, I still have pretty much every area in Super Metroid completely memorized--but when I'm just starting it's just so annoying to get lost and end up wandering around until I memorize the area.

That game just made no sense to me. I liked the first level for whatever reason, but after that it just got too weird.

I think the Dinosaur had platforms that appeared next to it... you had to jump up those and then jump on its head. Or something weird like that heh.

I want to get the Genesis version someday, just so I can finish the game.

Oh yes, Bart vs The Space Mutants...lol

I used to own that game. And yes, it was very weird. The whole thing was very alien...I've never seen a game like it.

The other game that was a favourite at the time was the original Ninja Turtles game. You know the one -- where you can control their van and shoot out of it, as well as fight enemies in the platformer-esque levels.

At the time, parts of it seemed very tough...but I haven't played that game in a long, long time.

And yes, Snake Rattle & Roll had some nasty stuff. lol

But what a briliant game! The two player mode was awesome. And I still love the sound it makes when you eat those little coloured sphere things. I also used to think it was great when you eat the flying ones, and their feathers kind of float down from where they were, because you've just snatched it out of the air.

What a cool game. ~_^

I always thought Metroid was pretty hard but I never realized how hard it really was until I replayed it on Metroid Prime. That game can be a real ***** sometimes.

None of The Simpsons games make any sense. Ever play Virtual Bart? Nothing in that game made any sense at all. It seemed to me that whether or not you were able to get through the levels was completely random. Stupid game.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit had to be the most difficult Nintendo game ever created. This can not be debated. It is fact. As a youngin' I loved the film. Couldn't get enough of it. So, it was only natural that I should play the game. To make a long story short, I'm sure I returned my copy on the very same day I rented it and made an exchange.

The aforementioned Battletoads was also extremely difficult. Especially, the sequence that involved the toads racing through a cave on some sort of jet-powered car. Maddening--simply maddening. Factor in the lack of continues and you're looking at one formidable gaming experience.

I also recall Contra being somewhat of a big challenge. The memory of shooters where the player dies in one hit warms my heart. Unfortunately, I've never gotten around to playing the Playstation 2 version, which is touted to torture the player with a staggering difficulty level.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit? wasn't all that hard... It was just really poorly laid out. Very little was provided to help you along on your cause. You seemingly were just supposed to know where you could find certain items. Most of my time was spent walking around just looking in all the damn buildings. Took me forever to even get to Toon Town.

Battletoads was mostly memorization in that level. I had no real problem with it after the first few tries.

Yeah, but the main problem is that (from what I remember) you share lives with the second player. Once we got past that area, our lives always ran out before we could reach the end of the game. >_<

Yes, I agree it is mostly memorization, but when you don't have a good memory and you have to know every inch of the levels... It gets rather difficult.

Well, I don't know that it was that, really. From what I remember, the controls were thoroughly unresponsive for that area. Jumping was particularly a huge problem. I don't know if anyone else had that trouble, but it attributed to the game's high difficulty level in a big way for me.

The second Zelda game got me. Never made it past like the 3rd level. LOL I still am trying to beat it. I pulled out my NES about 2 years ago and sarted playing it again. I have to hit it to get it to work. The hardest game I've ever played is The Tiny Toon Adventures game! OMG! It's so hard. I still can't beat it!
