Plant_Angel Posted September 5, 2003 Share Posted September 5, 2003 Has anyone else ever been concerned about the Japanese fondness for using school girls in their anime and of the general image of female roles? Not every anime features schoolgirls, I know, but its the ones that do. Female characters will always fall into the category of either submissive or actually insane (or close to), and will talk the most absurd things when in private, for example in Love Hina, the first episode when Keitaro is in the girls hot springs and Naru just talks "oh, Ive been noticing that recently my breasts........" completely randomly!! That and the ridiculously short skirts that are part of the uniform in even the least mature of animes, does it worry anyone about this fascination? Im not one to complain too much about political correctness (I wouldnt watch a lot of anime if I was) but it just made me think when a friend pointed this out. It is pretty much the same in the US, except we have a lot of strict rules about sexualizing kids. For whatever reason its not as big a deal in Japan. I think it plays to the really repressed and perverted Japanese adult male (old man groping on the subway) who wants to fantasize about young girls. Thankfully most anime aren't too bad, but sometimes you can get away with a lot of stuff with animation that you couldn't with real actors. I also think that in general the women in Japan are much more submissive than here, but thats cultural. I don't know enough to say historically why. Anime of that type is obviously geared to the general, single male in Japan, and so it plays itself accordingly. I don't find it that surprising. It's a fantasy. An escape. Tightly. X.X It seems, for whatever reason, people in Japan are less.. Censored, and nudity and such is not such a big taboo to them.. It's just the way they are, y'know? I, for one, am not complaining. :p However, I wonder if there are over-protective parents like that in Japan.. Or it's as common in Japan as fast food is here in the US...
