Konichiwa, Minna-sans!
It's Cocomi! Well, at my school everyone thinks I am someone most prone to being laughed at, so one Friday very recently, I brought a picture to school and asked people if they could tell me who was a girl and who was a boy just for fun. (and to get a laugh, sadly...) The picture had the cast (Or most of it) of Inuyasha. Well, the only thing I can say is everyone thought that Sesshomaru, Naraku, and Shippo were girls. No one got any of them right except for one of my teachers *big suprise!* and my friend who likes anime as much as I do.
Cocomi-chan
P.s. Srry, I can't upload the pic for some reason, but it's the one
where the paper is divided off into quadrants and Inuyasha and Kagome are standing in the middle, if it helps at all :D

It's very common [from my experience] that people who don't watch anime, or only Pokemon or something, can't tell the difference between girls and guys very well. If you've watched various animes with different styles, I guess we just have a better understanding of the style of anime.

Well ,i could understand the confuion. Naraku and Sesshomaru do look like cross dressers and Shippo both looks and sounds like a girl. The only way you could tell that Naraku and Sesshomaru are dudes is if you got full body pics and heard there voices.

Well just like maladjusted said. Many people period can't really tell the difference between male and female anime characters. If I may...
Take for example animes/manga like Fushigi Yugi and Ceres.

The men are drewn as beautiful as the women and since the pictures can't show off the voice well you can quess that. Many of the men look like women.
And believe you me Sailor Moon even had some men who look like girls..
And there are pleny of more of them like that out ther... I'll show ya pic of a few
The examples are from Fushigi Yugi...Tell me sho you think is the woman and whos the man....

Well just answer this how many men and how many woman are in this pic?
...and those who read FY..Dont ANSWER THIS

There are(I think) 4 guys and 4 girls in that picture you mentioned above sweetreyes. About the Inuyasha thing. I knew that Naraku and Sesshomaru were guys, mostly from their voices, but when i first say chippo he looked and sounded like a girl, until one of my friends corrected me. In a related story, when I first saw Sojiro in Rurouni Kenshin, I thought he was a girl too, because of the eyebrows and somewhat of the voice...He's still my favorite Rurouni Kenshin character though:)

I know the FY answer! In that picture there are
...2(Miaka and Yui)...
girls.
Nuriko dresses as a girl for a reason, though
I also thought Soujiro was a girl at first because of the extremely high voice and there's something about his eyes.

He does that because
he's gay. And he's in love with Hotohori. He comes clean later and you find his motivations for being that way. It's pretty sweet actually...*Sighs* Then he has to go and get killed...
Actually, I have seen MANY different styles of anime and usually I don't have a hard time telling the guys from the girls. But every now and then, there's a beautiful male that slips by me. Nuriko, for example. *laughs* Ah, man, I love Fushigi Yugi.

Well, it looks like there are 5 men and 3 women (I didn't look under the spoiler tag). I don't know, I don't get much access to manga. I don't reeally remember if I thought that those Inuyasha characters are guys or girls when I first saw them, my friends told me about them before I got to watch the show though.

Many anime give men feminine features. It's not uncommon.

I've only seen Inuyasha a few times, and I really didn't like it. That's besides the point. I had no past knowledge of it when I first saw it though, and I seriously thought the main character was a girl... until he talked anyway.

Um theres only one girl and that's the girl in the front in the brown school uniform,Miaka. Yui ain't in that pic it's Ambrioshi...whoopsie I wasn't suppose to anwser that was I(I own 1-8 of the Fy manga) Yeah but Last year I'd bring some of my manga to school to read on the bus and such. Before we pulled out sometimes I'd ask my friends who was a guy or a girl in FY and they'd fail...drastically....yeah but most of the time there are some fenimine looking men who can turn out to be very manly(ie Sesshomaru) It's bacially all about the makeup, hair length, and colors of the cold. I mean I know people who have mastaken Inuyasha for a woman simply because on the cover of my manga his outfit seems to be pink and well you know how his hair is so long...You'll get use to the fenimine looking guys tho in anime after you watch it long enough:sweat:....*runs off screaming something about her 110 post...this is the last one of these little message thingies yay!*

Yes... most people I ask think that all the boys are girls.(ecxept for Miroku) And I do admit that I thought Inuyasha was a girl when I didn't know what Inuyasha was. Alot of times, yes, anime boys look like girls.. but so what? It just gives them a nice interesting look.
Even some girls thought that Vash looks like a girl... >_<.... even though he doesn't. Oh well.

Well i thought htta Kenshin form RK was a girl. As well as Kurama from YYH. but then again, who hasn't made that mistake before? The anime industry has a bad habit of making them look 'too' feminin. They could go with Yusuke Urameshi type. He is obviously a guy, but still skinny and slightly curvy. They should make better character design choices. Or alteast not dress them in such tight clothing and colorfull were-is they look like there cross dressers- ala Kurama form YYH.

Quote- Vegeta from DBZ- "Pink!?! Is this a joke? What is this garment ment for? Man or woman?!?!?"

The interesting thing is that a lot of girls seem to like the more feminine anime guys. Just look at all the rabid Kurama fangirls-- and believe me, they number quite a few. ^__^

Yeah, I'll admit, I'm a fan of the androgynous look. But I've never thought that Inuyasha looked like a girl. Sesshomaru, maybe, but not Inuyasha. The only thing that might make him appear female is the long hair, and anyway, hair length doesn't say much when it comes to anime. There are just as many short-haired girls as there are long-haired guys.

Well, you can ask the same thing of Amiboshi. Why is he with the Suzaku Seishi if he is of Sieryu?

Because he is pretending to be one of the Suzaku Seven, Chiriko, so that when they try to summon Suzaku, it wont work!
Hope that answers your question. It's quite a brilliant plan, I think.

I've read books on manga drawing and have even taken some classes online. The only way, in some cases, to determine the gender of a character is a very subtle detail. Often a slight detail in the eyes or some other body part. What amazes me is that it seems like most anime try to confuse you. In kenshin for instance, Both Kenshin and Soujiro have totally femine body styles. Soujiro is totally femine in every way, everything, including eyes, hands, hair, etc.. are femine. Kenshin's only defining part are his eyes.
