myOtaku New Features Critique

Here are some features in mind for myOtaku's next round of upgrades...

1) "Highlight" Members - the ability to bold members in your 'friends' list. Kind of singling out extra-special members. This has been controversial.

2) Member List - sorted by popularity rank, when otaku life was last updated, and when joined.

3) When Otaku Life was last updated on all friends in backroom

What do you think of each?

Anything else you'd like to see? Right now we're focusing on small things...I can't really afford anything big right now in terms of programming...

Exactly what I was thinking of just a minute before i read this. I guess you beat me too it. I like them all...

Hmm. #2 sounds good, how about use having the control in the order of the list.

Option to either sort by:
name
rank
when myOtaku Life was last updated
Our choice on the order(the link becomes bold when myOtaku life has been updated on that member's site)

I don't see how the Highlight members feature could be controversial. I like the Idea, although some people might feel a bit envious if their names aren't bolded anywhere, I guess they're just going to have to get over it.

As for a member list, I give a big thumbs up to anything to do with the member list, regardless of wehter it's based on popularity rank or something else.

I think the highlighting members idea is a little random. For some reason it doesn't strike a good chord (... I just made up my own saying) in me. But some people might like it, so ... Heh, I guess I see why it's been "controversial," as I can't even make up my own mind.

I like #3 a lot (seeing when "Friends" have updated), but I think it should be an option, not mandatory. Some people probably don't want to see all that extra information.

EDIT: Meh, I didn't comment on the members list idea (#2). That's fine with me.

An interesting idea, but I agree with Terra on the fact that it does not sit right with me. I agree that some people may want it, but so long as it is not manditory I have no arguement.

I like it. Personally I prefere the alphabetical order that is active now, but getting to know when someone has updated their site is good.

As stated last time I like knowing when people update things.

How about a small HTML instruction guide. I know that a lot of people (like me) do not know much about the HTML coding used to change things, like adding images and backgrounds.

Adam, Adam, Adam... The greatness of these options fully surpasses all expectations for this, with one small thing... can you make #2 and #3 optional? Those things can get pretty annoying very quickly.

As for new things, an HTML guide would be sweet, also with maybe a small PHP guide? I know someone who could probably/possibly do a PHP guide for ya...

There are places to learn HTML and PHP all over the internet.

Have at it.

Anyway, my suggestion would be that, when making a comment, line breaks are automatically created with enter. As of now you have to use the paragraph HTML tag to make line breaks in comments... pressing will do nothing. It can be troublesome.

How would the member list thing be annoying? Unless I completely missed what he was mean by it...

"Member List" brings to mind a...well, a list of members. Like here, you can click on members and sort the page by number of posts, date joined, first letter of their name.

Am I totally off on that, or does it make sense to anyone else?

As for the bolding thing, I like it.

You're correct, Sara. We were originally going to have a basic memberlist, which simply listed members alphabetically or something.

But I recommended that we allow as many listing options as possible (ie: rank, alphabetical, date listed, date updated) etc etc.

I think that'll make it easier for people to find other myOtaku members.

As for bolding...well, that's an option. So people can bold "best friends" if they choose to. It's up to the individual user.

And the update thing will be pretty subtle. When you visit your backroom, and it shows your list of friends...a small tag of text will appear next to each friend's name. That tag will tell you when they last updated. But it will not be visible when you view your own site, so it won't actually be cluttered or anything.

The bolding thing is odd in the sense that instead of just having friends, you're basically dividing them up into groups. I don't really think that idea will sit well with a lot of people, and I forsee people IMing me and asking why they aren't bolded and other people are. That's how this place is.

So, personally, I wouldn't even use it.

A member list would be appreciated though.

Damn, as soon as I read this thread I went onto MyOtaku. I thought they'd been done already >_<;

Meh, I know I wouldn't use the bold members thing- for one I feel too guilty about singling people out, so I'd either have no-one or everyone boldened.

But the Memberlist is definately a good idea, in my opinion- I've been wanting to find out exactly who has MyOtaku sites and what people's popularities are on it, heh.

As for the backroom update kajigger, I'm for that, heh. I hope the backroom won't get too clogged with displays, though.

Personally, there's only one person I'd use the bold thing on (could it be you? ;)), and I don't care if people would use it for my name in their lists, so I don't care either way.

Member list and a little alert for when someone updates their page would be very handy indeed. If you look, there's a lot of space to the right of the friend list in the back room, so I don't think it's going to get cluttered.

I do have another suggestion, though; that is, an option for using only HTML in Otaku Life and comment posts. As it is, I have to have all the HTML on a single line, since myOtaku interprets both hitting the enter key and the
and

tags as line breaks. Makes it annoying when I'm trying to do updates and stuff to my introduction, since I have to wade through all the HTML to find the bits I want to change. It'd be much easier if I could have things on different lines and just use the
and

tags.

 • 1 year later...
I do have a suggestion on the ratings system. However, I am guessing the work required to do this would be more trouble than its worth, but I'll open it for discussion anyway.

When a user votes that they do not like desired fanart, e-cards, etc., somehow a link will post to the voters Otaku site.

There are a lot of great artists here at Otaku that I never get a chance to see because some idiots vote them down on purpose. It's very frustrating. This way there would be no favoritisms.

So, if I were to say, no I don't like this piece. Then the person who owns the fan art will know it was me who did it. If they want to know why I voted them down, they can ask me. Then I would say...I didn't like the composition, it was too generic, etc.
