Final Fantasy: Unlimited (the anime)

Well, I just learned that ADV will be releasing the Final Fantasy: Unlimited anime series this October.

If you don't know, FF:Unlimited is an anime series released in 2001, and was made by the same people who did Blue Sub No.6.

All I know about the series is that it has nothing to do with the previous FF anime (Legend of the Crystals), nor the FF CG movie. I really don't think it follows any of the game storylines either.

Does anyone else know anything about this series? If so, what does it deal with?:therock:

I have watched about 9 episodes of this anime, and the only thing I can say is that I would rather not watch it again. It's not a good anime, and yes, the plot has nothing to do with the FF games or FF: The Spirits Within.

The story is about two kids, a brother and a sister, who's parents disappeared into 'another world'. The two kids go off on an adventure to find their parents by using some train [I don't remember correctly], and if they got on the correct train on the correct time, their would be transported to this alternate universe. They eventually get on the bus, and the meet with young woman with a huge chest that reminds me of Tifa, and all three of them go into the AU. Apparently, the lady has some magical powers. They meet some mysterious man who has this special weapon of some sorts, and he appears on screen on and off. We find out he's looking for a long-lost friend who was kidnapped.

One thing that annoyed to no end was that whenever the lady used her special magical powers, they would use the came exact CG scene over and over...and over. Same thing would happen when the mysterious man used his weapon.

*shrugs* I didn't enjoy it very much, and I heard it bombed in Japan, too.

Yeah, from what I've seen, it doesn't look too good.

But I seen a few screens with Moogles and Chocobos in them. Do they actually apear in the series?

Hmm, why do they even call it Final Fantasy, if it has nothing to do with the games? They first did it with the movie, now this series.

*shrugs* Maybe the creators of FF had something to do with it.

Yes, I've seen on-screen appearances of the Chocobo, the only good thing about the show. It's very cute. ^_^ There's also this funky ending theme and it has these 8-bit chocobos running around.

I rented FF Unlimited from Blockbuster. I thought it was ok, but it didn't have much to it. The chocobos are really cute though. ^_^

I would not suggest buying it unless it really appeals to you in story, plot, etc. If you think it will be related to Legend of the Crystals, guess again. The repetiveness of battle scenes were very annoying as well.

Not to sound like an *** or anything, but why do you guys keep saying this? When have any Final Fantasy games/movies ever related to one another, with the exception of the upcoming X-2 sequel. Lol. Anyway, yeah, I've heard the same rumor that Maladjusted and Semjaza heard, of it's cancellation. I don't personally know, but I think Newtype-USA is comin' out with the first episode next month on a demo CD, so I'll have to check it out there.

Alright, excitement caught up on me (stupid emotions). Not to get off topic, I'd like to know when this other Fianl Fantasy anime came out. I certainly would enjoy watching it.

>_< I don't know how to break it to you, kids, but bluntly, Final Fantasy Unlimited is possibly one of the worst anime shows ever. It's not a rumor that it was canceled in Japan, because it is indeed true. This is all my opinion [except for that cancelation thing], but many others agreed with me.

Yeah, it's definitely not a rumor. I don't know why so many people feel some need to challenge things I state as facts... but that most certainly is a fact lol. When you have something as popular as FF is in Japan and an anime of it can't even pull them in... well, that's saying a lot.

As for the differences... games are one thing. When you make an anime based off a game series, I think you should at least include something to do with that game. There is nothing in this anime. It could be called Monster Battlers and no one would have known the difference. The name is on there to make money, simple as that. Making an anime based on a specific game would have made a lot more sense.

I got this yesterday as a demo from NewType and I really didn't like it. It was very vague, no plot development and the characters seemed very 2-dimensional, I mean no depth whatsoever. Also, their use of CG really bothered me, it didn't blend well with the rest of the animation, and looked particularly crappy. In short, it sucked...

Sephiroth For one FFU has a great story just not really clear i had to watch it many times to somewhat understand it or even understand it.

It's story is so well thought up that the main story comes from the flashbacks that make the present story. What happened to Kaze is like what happenes when you loss someone except on a lot bigger degree ( his love tells him to use her soul as a soil to fight to which makes him regret everthing).

Let me think some more and i'll finish this post.

Even with all the bad things said about it, how everyone seems to just downside it, I still plan on getting it. Not just renting but BUYING just to spite you all. I, for one, am a FF collector. I have nearly all the games including the ones for NES. I plan to complete my collection with this series.

Having actually watched the series right to the very end, I think I can make an objective view of this.

On the whole I enjoyed it, but I didn't have an preconceptions about the series before I saw it, except not to expect very much.

I watched the first ten minutes in English, then switched to the Japanese version with subtitles because the voices of Ai and Yu irritated me too much. After that it became a little more bearable, heh.

The storyline reminds me a lot of the Pokemon series, but more mature if only because there's a plotline that runs all the way through- the scenarios are bizarre and repetitive, and often poorly explained. I don't think it's meant to be a particularly serious series in that respect- anyone expecting some action-packed sword-slinging as in the FF gams will be bitterly disappointed, but it's still not without its charms. You do need to persevere, though- sometimes I just wanted to get to the next episode to see if anything interesting would happen. More often than not they'd just end up in a situation akin to the one they were in before, but every so oftenyou'd get a humourous/character-related episode.

The version I was watching had appaling subtitles so I found it incredibly hard to figure out what the characters were actually talking about- names kept changing and words were smushed together... nasty. But that's really the fault of the DVD manufacturer. Even so, I still didn't understand some of the things relating to the characters and story-
It was only five minutes ago that I found out that the girl in Kaze's flashbacks was his sister, the Soil that feeds the Ma-Gun is the soul of everyone on the Moogle's planet who was killed by Omega on Windaria (where Kaze also lived). But I still don't know where the Demon Swordsman came from, what Omega actually planned to do or why Lisa was there in the first place.
There are a couple of Drama CDs released in Japan that explain some more things, but it would have been nice to have them in the series, especially since I can't speak or understand Japanese >.>

The end of the series I did really enjoy though, and not just because it ended. It was truely exciting, and having sat through 23 episodes of more-often-than-not fairly pleasant tedium it was great to finally see things pull together. Of course, it would be typical that
the characters I liked best all died
, but that's how it goes. It was still great to watch. I'm just glad I wasn't the one who spent money on the series ^_~

I did buy the soundtrack, though- the orchestral music and themes are some of my favourite pieces of music, especially the one which plays when Kaze fires the gun. I could set that track on 'repeat' for hours and never get bored with it, heh.

I thought it was worth watching, if only for the end. But there's a heck of a lot of middle to get through inbetween times- you wouldn't miss anything much if you skipped all that. I think it would have been much better if they'd focussed more on the characters rather than adding unnecessarry bits to the Inner World and trying to explain that. Story arcs are good, but only when you're interested in the story they carry.

I've been into FFU since the first one was released in Australia almost a year ago. I have only got the first four volumes though. The thing I found about animes and especially FFU is that you can't understand the basic storyline from just one episode. The story unfolds through all episodes and so it is impossible to understand everything from watching a half hour. Kaze is awesome *points to avatar*.

On the first page of this thread, a lot of people cited the fact that FF:U was cancelled as evidence of how much the series sucked. As far as I know, though, Japanese television ratings have very little to do with an anime's quality. Samurai Champloo, the highly anticipated second series from the creator of Cowboy Bebop, was given a very late timeslot and ended up being cancelled after seventeen episodes. A different channel decided to pick up the remainder of the show and advertise it as a second season, but that must have still been a pretty bad blow for people who expected Champloo to be really popular. Gad Guard, another one of my recent favorite series, was cancelled altogether and had to be completed on DVD. If a show isn't attracting an audience, it may simply be the result of poor marketing or whatnot.

So, yeah... just had to get that off my back. That's not to say I have much of an interest in FF:U; a few of the character designs seem cool, but the clumsy-looking CG in the promos made me wince.

I don't see why your complaining about the anime, in some ways it is just like the game. The repetitive battles, what FF does not have the same moves over and over with the same actions every time you use them. The story may suck but thats because it would do better in a game. You don't want to wait through the series to find the story, but thats what you have to do for a lot of games. Anyways the CG where he uses the maggun is awesome.

Final Fantasy Unlimited? Hmm...I've never heard of this anime, but I have heard of Final Fantasy X having an anime. I don't think I would want to watch this anime to be honest. I am actually a big fan of the games of Final Fantasy, but I didn't like The Spirits Within. It was way far from the video game type of story I thought. I would like to see the anime made from one of the games. Like, I'm looking forward to Advent Children, because it is from the seventh game. I want to see an anime from Final Fantasy 9 personally. But from what I've heard, I wouldn't want to see FF Unlimited. Oh well...
