David Bowie

I am not sure if anyone has have created a thread devoted to discussing David Bowie, although it wouldn?t surprise me if good ole peach head himself, Semjaza Azazel, made a thread about him and I overlooked it. Hopefully this thread will incite a little discussion, and perhaps encourage some people to explore some of his music.

As far as genres go, David Bowie has always been hard to, if not impossible to classify. He tends to move through, and incorporate trends and styles while simultaneously imbibing his music with a distinct sound. As phenomenal as the instrumental aspect of Bowie?s music is, I find myself drawn to him because of his lyrics and vocals. I always associate his with that of an opera singer, not because it is traditional, or even due to his vocal range. I associate opera with David Bowie because his voice seems resonate with grandeur (for a lack of a more appropriate term). Even his songs that have a quicker tempo seem to slow down when he sings.

David Bowie has a number of phenomenal albums (hopefully Reality is exceptional as well, I still haven?t had the chance to buy it) but my two favorite, Man Who Sold The World and Heathen, are newer releases. His older music is excellent as well, unfortunately I only have two of his greatest hits albums, and hopefully I can get a couple of his older albums soon.

I think that is where I will end my thoughts for now. Feel free to use this thread to discuss any aspect of David Bowie?as if you needed an invitation?

I guess I'll never live peach head down. Damn you Taylor Hewitt!! lol

No, I've actually not made a thread on Bowie before. Mostly because I didn't even know where to begin. I know there are people here that know Bowie, but I also know that there are many that have no idea who he is. For younger people, I make exceptions... but my friend Ashley's roommate is 19 and had no idea who he was. Come on.

Bowie is obviously rock, but he is also hard to pin down into a genre. I think you described it very well. He's just extremely versatile. He's managed to absorb new sounds and twist them into his own creations, somehow managing to make them still feel like Bowie.

There are exceptions. There are a few CDs where I, and others, feel he went a bit too far. Never Let Me Down is the biggest example. While some people feel the recent works preceeding Heathen (such as Hours...) were disappointing, this one is on a whole other level. It's enjoyable on some levels, but it's not really Bowie... nor is it very good.

Heathen marked the return of his trademark sounds, while still keeping the stuff he had absorbed over the 90s and adding even more to it. Heathen really is a great album, and I have no clue why he didn't put a full tour behind it.

Reality is getting a full tour though. In fact, he's coming to Chicago next month. I believe it's mostly sold out already though and it's not cheap. I've yet to hear the CD, but I'm told it is not as good as Heathen.

Even his worst is above the norm though, so I can't complain too much.

If you really want to get into Bowie, I guess you've made the best first steps. The current Greatest Hits release is not bad. I'd skip the 1 CD and go straight to the 2 CD. The 1 CD version doesn't even have Life on Mars? on it. What the hell?

Otherwise, a lot of his stuff is being rereleased as special, remastered limited editions. They generally come with the original CD, a bonus disc full of random b-sides, live and unreleased materal and an oversized booklet.

Get The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. That's basically his masterpiece.

This thread is very convenient because I just watched a David Bowie biography on the Biography channel yesterday. Pretty cool, to say the least.

I've not had the opportunity to hear a lot David Bowie's best work, due mostly to the fact that I did not listen to a ton of music when I was younger (I was one of those dorks who read all the time :p). That biography caught me up real well on Bowie's career, however...very interesting stuff. Sad to hear that, early on, he was one of those guys who got duped by a greedy, jackass manager. For all the great music he produced, you'd think he'd have been a very rich man from the start.

Most of his work I've heard is either from early on his career or his more recent work (like the stuff he did with Nine Inch Nails...awesomeness). Most of his early work I've heard because of the oldies station my mother listens to.

So, yeah, David Bowie is great. I definitely need to get my hands on more of his work. If only I weren't so cheap...

Ziggy Stardust baby. I think that about sums it up. Of course, the only songs I really like that much are Heroes, and Sorrow (both of which sound surprisingly good when thrashed, by the way), so I'll limit this post to my endorsement of David Bowie without actually saying much of content....

Depends what you're talking about. Bowie and NIN obviously worked together in I'm Afraid of Americans. The normal version that hit the radios and MTV is basically a duet of sorts between Bowie and Reznor. Has a really good music video too. Reznor follows Bowie throughout the whole thing. There's a lot of cool effects in it, especially the taxi being shot at near the end.

The rest of the I'm Afraid of Americans single is pretty awful. I'm not into any of the remixes. Reznor also did versions of Scary Monsters and a couple others... they're not as easy to find though. They are worth hunting out. I'm Afraid of Americans really isn't lol.

I really wish I could have seen that NIN/Bowie tour years back. That would have been a great thing to see. At least there are some decent bootlegs about, and some of it does appear on the Closure release.

Yeah, I was mostly referring to the tour which looked pretty damn cool from what I saw. That would've been the thrill of my life if I could've seen a show like that.

OMG! I thought I was the only one who thought like that! LOL Any way, I love Bowie. My mom is obsessed with him so we got all the albums and cd's. I grew up on him, I guess.

I honestly picked this album up thirty minutes after I read your post, during my lunch break on Tuesday. I?ve probably listened to it a good half-dozen times now?it is a great album. Although I have heard several of the songs before (many of which are on the ?Best of Bowie? collection) it is such a solid album. It is one of those albums that you listen to and it puts you into a surreal mood?

Well I now have Reality... I don't know if I'm really into or not. It's so abstract. The cover is actually very fitting in its own way, because I don't know how else to describe the album. It's too many different things at once for me to even choose one opinion heh.

I will admit that it is good. It's not as good as Heathen by a long shot, but it is good. It's not something I'd run out to buy if you're just now trying to get into Bowie.

Other than Ziggy... Scary Monsters, Hunky Dory, The Man Who Sold the World, Heathen, Outside and Space Oddity are all good things to work with.

Hehe, Bowie. There is just this unexplainable coolness about him. I love him so much, especially in Labyrinth. Everyone says I'm wierd but for some reason I find him so sexah. ah.

I doubt I spelled the name right... but my favorite movie with David Bowie would have to be Labrynth. I remember being really young and watching it, but I scared to death of the little puppets! I remember telling my mom "Sh... the toad king and his minions are after me!"

After my brother was born and happiness overwhelmed us all... my brother began to watch the Labrynth and he called David Bowie "Sexy man"! I think he's going to be a yaoi boy when he grows up! But that's always fine with me!

Wow... this post was totally random... but I'm always happy to share my thoughts with others!

.......As long as they're not stalkers... :shifty:

David Bowie rocks. Not only is a majority of his music great, hes got this 'omfg i'm cool' aura that is pretty close to the truth. I think he was awesome in Labyrinth. That wierd sci-fi jig he used to do was cool too. The interesting costume that looked like a big swirl or a target...I forgot

I am a big fan of Bowie and I grew up listenning to him because my dad did. I have to say that his best song is Rebel Rebel. David was one of those more experimental artists with his music in the 80s which was cool. Also that songs Ashes to Ashes was cool and the video to it was real trippy

Watch the one-sentence spam, just a little hinty-poo ;).

All you David Bowie Fans need to go see the movie 'Life Aquatic: with Steve Zissou'. I think you'll be plesantly suprised by a young portugese man who can play the guitar decently-well with a wonderfully cheerful voice. I don't want to ruin much more of it for you, but David Bowie is a constant tremor in the background noise of the particularily funny film.
