Meteora
Yeah Iknow that this is a Favorite book thread but please let me try. Also please put effortinto the posts. Specially you newbie's. What is your favorite book and why? My favorite book is The Elfstones of Shannara. Thsi book is like Harry potter, its so descriptive. Iliove that in books because it feels like you are there. Then in this book the storyline is so awsome. If you want to know it I'll tell you in a bit. But this book was awsome. Also his other books were good as well. The other Shannara books are the same they are so descriptive, but thisis my favorite, because it has the most action and the best storyline. Well tell me what is your favorite book and why? Im serious about the why part as well.

You need to tell why it is your favorite book, rather than just post one sentence which contains therein your favorite book and nothing else; that, my friends and fellow squirrels, is spam, heh. It's really too hard to choose my favorite book, so I cannot give an ascertained answer. Truthfully, I don't feel that I am that much of a bibliophile (obssesor of books), since lately I have not really been reading much. I keep stopping then starting then stopping all these books, but ah well. Recently I did start reading The Hobbit again after I had read through most of it earlier and just stopped. I have also started reading Shakespeare's Julius Caesar play again too. ...I cannot think of one certain book, really. The Harry Potter books are definitely good, some of Stephen King's books are definitely good (The Stand, The Dead Zone, to name a few), I have a liking for Jean M. Auel's 4-book series that starts off with The Clan of the Cave Bear...I enjoyed the Fredrick Douglass Slave Narrative...the list goes on lol. I can't choose.
Angelus_Necare
My favorite book eh? well I have a lot of favorites, most of them fantasy, I love fantasy because elements that we cannot experiance in our everyday lives are commonplace among the pages, if I'd have to list: -"The Iron dragons daughter" -"Joust" -"Sorcery rising" Those would have to be the top three, The iron dragon's daughter is a book I read yearly because the story of a girl growing up in a fancifull drug and sex ridden society never gets old. Joust is set in an egyptian-like world where dragons and their riders fight wars by jousting the enemy. Sorcery rising is the first book of "fool's gold" folowing several stories of two races divided by religion and a greater power. I suggest if anyone has time to read, pick one of these. Carr
The Red Tent always makes me cry. It's about Denah, from the Bible, but it is a novel. The first time I read it I cried. I never cry at books, ever. It is full of tragedy, but it comes out good in the end, in a sort of melencholy way. I love that it has a happy ending, but it still seems sad. :therock:

Are we the retarded group who can't make decent posts and never seem to last long? That seems like a shallow statement to me. Anyway, my favorite book is Blue Sword. It is because I love fantasy books and it's done by one of my favorite writers. I love all her books but this is my favorite out of all of them and all the ones I've read. It has a large amount of material in it so you could take your time and read. Even for me it took a few weeks to finish because I'm rather slow at reading unless I'm really into it. It actually captures me and let's me experience a adventure like I was a part of the book. It's interesting and gave me a chance to use my spare time.
Marron347
Right now my favorite books would have to be A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. Leguin and the Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien. I love A Wizard of Earthsea because it has one of the most interesting strorylines I have ever seen. Also, there is just the right amount of action and not a lot of touchy-feely stuff, which is perfect for me. I also like this book because the wizards have staffs and not wands, they don't fly around on little broomsticks, they don't wear those weird little pointy hats and the spells have a lot of secrecy to them so that not just anyone could use them, as oppose to Harry Potter, which I don't really like. The world called Earthsea is very detailed and there are many different races of people and many different cultures. The author is very descriptive in her writing as well, which I enjoy. I love the Hobbit. This is a book I can read over and over and over again. I know this book is considered by many to be just an introduction to the Lord of the Rings, but it is more than that. It is an exiting and interesting fantasy novel for all ages. It isn't too long and it isn't too short. Another thing I like about this book is the way it is written. It is very descriptive, but in a funny sort of way even when little Bilbo is lost in the tunnels of the goblins. Tolkien's writing is very distinct; I could recognize it anywhere. A couple of other series' I like are the Narnia series by C.S. Lewis and the Dragon's Milk series by Susan Fletcher. I would reccomend any of these books to anyone who is looking for a good fantasy to read.
Lord Rannos
My favorite book is pretty much any of the redwall books by Brian Jacques. They have many fine details, interesting characters, in-depth battle scenes, and a little bit of humor. My favorite probably being Taggerung.I have also started piking up books by Tamora Pierce.cant resist the magic/fantasy mediveal thing. For one last thing, most older(teens up) readers would enjoy the Amber series by Roger Zelazny, it has a great perspective on the fact that there is no altruism really. Also good sci-fi for the unique ideas and characters. Sky Moonflow
This might not be long but... My favorite book is called "An Angel's Cry" It's a good book cause it tells about this girls struggle to regain her life after a diagonis of lung cancer. Now this might sound strange..but I kinda knew how that girl felt. Well anyways. It really taugth me something I don't think I'll forget. It is a good book cause It makes you feel like you are the girl in the story. Ok my other favorite book is "Third Star At Night" Its my other favorite because it tell bout a child who has lost all of its' family. It seems confusing cause the book is written like the narrator in inside the childs head. Well the child grows up in dowtown New York. The child has no clue what it is doing there and where it's parents are. It reflects on my life sometimes. And my final favorite is "Black and White" It tells of two girls one white named Niame Willcox. And a black girl named Zoe Narvasa. They don't know each other. But it tells each of their storys. It tells about how they saw life. How they acted and how they where treated. It's back when black people where like aliens to white people. So It kinda teaches something. I guess. Well that's it. Kyo no Ryu
That is a very hard choice between these 3... Holes- I like this book because it pieces everything together so well that by the end you have no questions left. I read it for the 4th time today. I forget the name- There was this book that I read in 5th grade that I can neve remember the name of. It was about some big storm that hits Alaska like every 10 years or somethin... Around where i live lots of people read, Artemis Foul- Its about this genius 12 year old (how could I resist?) whos gotta be the smartest person in the world. Anyway he wants to steal a bunch of gold from elf people. Its got a lot of action. One of the other OBers (I think he got banned) told me about a good Godzilla book. I havent finished it yet but its pretty cool in my opinion. I live near a library:)
Cacophony
I hope I meet the your standards of what a post should be, though it's going to be hard, being a "newb" and all:butthead: My favorite book is "The Epics of Celtic Ireland" by Jean Markale. I love the stories in it and Jean does a great job of presenting them. You learn a lot about the Irish traditions, what they were like ect, by reading this book. The fact that I'm part Irish probably has a lot to do with why I like this book so much too:p
Bio
I don't really have a favorite book, but my favorite series is the 'Ender's Game' series, by Orson Scott Card. The books are very descriptive and realistic. They're all Sci-Fi books, but they are believable, because the author goes into deep explaination as to how the hi-tech ships work. There's alot of religion in the last three books, but it doesn't really throw off the sci-fi feel. There are four books in the series, and they are considerably long. I've read all the books except one, which I'm reading now. I'm going to choose to ignore Meteora's n00b comment.
Ares
I like The Lord of the Rings by Tolkien because: It is very interesting. It includes many great characters and environments. I mean, it even spawned hit movies. There is no comparison to this book. -Ares
instantramen14
I like so many books its so hard to pick one!!!! I love the Redwall books by Brian Jaques (sp?) They have wonderful story lines and the charachters are animals that talk and live in an abbey!!! (:D ANIMALS!!!!) Redwall abbey is usually the target for attacks because its very prosperous. The inhabtants of the abbey have to fight them off. The series spans several hundred years. it is a must read!!! The Lord of the Rings and the Sillmiralion by J.R.R. Tolkien I have one thing to say: the books are way better than the movies!!!! The Sillmarilion is a prequel to the LotR and the hobbit. I still have to read the hobbit. :sweatdrop: His Dark Materials trilogy (The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass) by Phillip Pullman These are really good, if you like mystical magic stuff read this book. Its a bout a girl, Lyra and Will and a prophecy about Lyra and angles and a war between Lord Asriel and heaven. Its really good. This is another one to read. Hmmmm.... All british authors... this says somthing...
Eclectic
My favourite book is the last in a trilogy. It's 'The Amber Spyglass' by Philip Pullman. It's really deep and philosophical on things ranging from religion to love to magick to life. I can't say too much, or it will give away the whole thing. You should read it. Amorphous
Well lets' see here. I have a lot of books, since I was so into them when I was younger. I used to read a lot of horror novels. Stuff like Dean Koontz, and John Saul. My dad was the one that had gotten me into this genre of book. I was obsessed with horror. I used to read a Dean Koontz book a weekend. It was quite amazing on how fast of a reader I was. Since then I stopped reading as much, so I can't really read as fast as I used to. Anyways, a favortie book. I would for sure have to say that it was 'The Right Hand Of Evil' by "John Saul". A disturbing tale, I really loved it though. It was confusing at some points since I was much younger when I read it. For the reason of liking it though was that it was the only thing that has ever really scared me that was really ficitional. It gave me a huge jolt close to the ending it was just an awesome book.
eleanor
I don't have one favorite books, but I can name several I enjoyed. Angela's Ashes --I'm in love with Frank McCourt's writing style, and I think the memoir is definately a moving one. It was one of those books I couldn't put down until I was finished. ^_~ I reccomend to everyone, although you should at least be 12 or something. That's when I read it. The sequel, 'Tis, is also a good book. I really prefer the first one, though. Lord of the Flies --Awesome, awesome book. I read it in seventh grade, and I got extremely interested in it while writing the book report. The whole story and theme really got me. The Bell Jar --It's a story about a girl, who was a victim of society. My sister first recommended it to me, and I think I finished it in two days after I read on and off. I still liked it a lot, though, just because of storyline. I love reading good books like those, where the narrator will tell you absolutely everything. I don't really remember anything specific, just that I enjoyed it. Lol Catcher in the Rye --Funny book, to say in the least. I just read it for the humor, really. ^_^;;; Slaughter House Five --*forces everyone to read it* Awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, etc. This is spam, but whatever. >_< Recommended books: Brave New World, Animal Farm, Night, Harry Potter series, 1864, Hamlet, Redwall series, Ender's Game [and its sequels], Of Mice and Men, I am the Cheese, Julius Caesar, Alice in Wonderland [you heard me], and One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish. ^_~ Sorry for the spammish ending.
Dead Alice
I love the Harry Potter books because they're so descriptive, and always keep you wondering. J.K. Rowling does a wonderful job of capturing the reader's attention. It makes you want to be in the book. I just wish they'd come out with the last 2 already!!! >_< I also like The Lord of the Rings (even though I haven't finished TTT yet cough cough), which is also very descriptive. Dmitri_Dragoon
So many books read, so hard a decision to make as to which one is my favorite. Overall though, my favorite book, would be Tom Clancy's Without Remorse and Rainbow Six. Those two books feature my favorite character of all Tom Clancy novels, John Clark. The two books are very technical and in-depth. But still very interesting. They even start out a little slow, but if you read Tom Clancy, you know that it is normal. I have many more favorite books, but those two stand out the most.

CharmedImmortal
I never read any kool book since after I read harry potter the 4th book. But I'll guess I'll go with Harry Potter books. The reason why I LOVE reading this book is that it's very detailed and it really explains everything that was has happening in the story, as if it was a true story or something like that. The events are very exciting especially the kinda scary ones (if you know what I mean o.O). And I would like to read the 5th book...If i can afford it, since my allowance is low. ^_^;; So I think this is why I love reading this book.
amibasuki
Originally posted by Gentle ... Anyway, my favorite book is Blue Sword. ...
:toothy: didn't think anybody would mention it. I LOVE that book. that and the Hero and the Crown. I agree though, the Blue Sword is better. the only gripe I have with it is the first couple of chapters, which are boring as all get out. but once they're done with, the rest of the book's great. haven't read anything else by Robin McKinley though >.>' now for the Harry Potter books, my favorite one being the third one. awesome-ness. everything about those books are awesome. I also like most everything by Madeline L'Engle. The Wrinkle in Time series and A Ring of Endless Light are my favorites from her. then there's Roald Dahl. I honestly can't say which one of his books I like best, partially because it's been ages since I've read one, and because there were so many books of his that I liked in the first place. most of my favorites consist of the ones that they bothered making movies out of, plus that book with the rhyming fairy tales that he twisted around. one of these days I'm gonna get that Roald Dahl Treasury book I always see at Barnes and Noble. as to why I like those books, I like the Roald Dahl ones for the quirky/imaginative stories, the Wrinkle in Time ones because they were imaginative/interesting and I had to really think over them because of things like those tesseracts and such (headache), the Harry Potter books because I couldn't ever put any of the books down until I finished reading them (not to mention a couple of parts where they yanked on my heartstrings *sob*
WHY HIM?!
), and the Blue Sword because....."I just do!" heh, think I might have forgotten some, but these'll certainly do fine for now.

Guest Aki88
I have a hard option between 3 books: 1) The Lord of the Rings, by J.R.R Tolkien: I loved the three books, because the author is ver descriptive and I feel like I'm almost there; sharing tears and fight. 2) The Miserables, by Victor Hugo: although I love fantasy books I can't step aside reality, this book is a very good example about it. It described France before and after the defeat of Napoleon and people used to suffer a lot-not by that. Well Victor Hugo and his books are romantics (realistic). 3) Steppen Wolf, by Hermann Hesse: I loved it because... well I can hardly describe it because, I simply don't have words (take it literally, I'm southmerican, I speak spanish). This books tells the story of a man who carries a very peculiar kind of life... you just read it and you'll love it. Thanks for reading.... :) PS: please don't make any comments about us, Newbies. It has nothing to do with our writting.
Guest Stealth Knight
My favorite book(s) is the Broken Sky series becase it is a fantasy(and I love fantasy books), and it has cool stuff in it. It is quite descriptive and it shows hardships and struggles. Another thing is that once that you finish one book, you want to read the next because the book before leaves you in suppense. She is pretty much an average writer due to the fact a lot of writers have written like she does...the way she writes often reminds me of Stephen King's writing in some aspects...not all, of course; but yes, of course she has a writing style, even as much as it's been used before. You are right about plot-wise. This is how many writers make up for their dull, uninteresting writing--they are able to weave very nice stories.
