Anime The official Samurai X (not Rurouni Kenshin) thread. WARNING SPOILERS

I have Rurouni Kenshin Meiji Kenkaku no Romantan(aka Trust and Betrayal) and I really loved it. The animation and mood of the storyline was very dark and more serious than the tv series. I really want to see the movie and Reflection.

I first saw the series and got hooked its good stuff but then i saw samurai x: trust and betrayal and i was blown away. The story was so deep [SPOILER]the lack of emotion from kenshins part seems fitting as when it shows him younger he is very emetional but later on he's much more apathetic naturally because he was hardened by his days of manslaying and then you see him soften up in the end only to...well you know with tomoe and all.. [/SPOILER] It rly made me sympathize with the character and almost share in a piece of the pain he felt. Then there is Samurai X: Reflection. This OVA is as mentioned by somebody before very nostalgic and I won't lie i was in tears at the end...
The movie was really good too but had a tone much more similar to the tv series. Dagger, I saw your comment towards the beginning of the thread WATCH THE OVAS IN JAPANESE with subtitles, the american voice acting is terrible and is so dry it ruins it I hated Reflection when i chose to watch it in english one day it just doesnt do it justice

It's so deep, and a good story at that. Some people say that it just doesn't even seem like Kenshin in the movies (compared to the series), but i think that makes perfect sense. In the first one (Trust&Betrayal), taking place before the series, Kenshin was an assassin (did i spell that right?), and a killer. Though as nails and all. [SPOILER]Then the whole incident in the end... and the events that took place in the motion picture (different from the OVA's), Kenshin chose to abandon his killing ways[/SPOILER], where the series picks up...

Then there was Reflection. It makes sense that he was so serious in that one too. [SPOILER]He was much older, wiser, and had that nasty illness... [/SPOILER]

In terms of the dubbing... i didn't even take the time in the first place to watch it dubbed, but i can say that the sub was pretty good.
I don't usually watch anime dubbed, as i preffer to watch it in Japanese. (The only anime really good dubbed is Cowboy Bebop i think.) Just like manga. I preffer that "backwards" which is the way it was meant to be... :animesmil [/COLOR]

I personally liked both of them movies. Reflections was not anywhere near as good as Trust and Betrayal, but it is another half of the story. Tomoe and Kenshin's relationship always hit home more than Kaoru and Kenshin's.

I have to agree with Dagger on this one. While it was good to have the backstory and the end story, I much preferred RK.

The characters feel much more likable and there is a much broader range of emotions in the entire show - characters, story, music, drawing etc.

I found the Samurai X OVA's to be very somber and didn't feel much joy when watching them. It was also very strange watching the different drawing style with characters that I felt I knew so well from the series seeming very different in the OVAs.

Overall I'd have to say I didn't really like the OVAs and probably won't watch them again.

Thats true its very different but its great because its a sign of the times. Trust and Betrayal (also my favorite as somebody else just said themselves) took place during at time of war and strife thus the personalities would naturally reflect that.

There is also Reflections which (for the characters involved) was also a dark time [SPOILER] being that Kenshin was deathly ill and everybody knew it was only a matter of time before the lovable hero of RK met his end soon after to be followed in all likelihood by Kaoru. Its a sad story and the character's attitudes reflect that.[/SPOILER]

I have the Reflections DVD. The ending was really sad. But I think the series will continue with Kenji. :catgirl:

I love kenshin. it's like the best anime ever. i've never seen the samurai x movies tho. i want to. i'm sure it'd be awesome. :)

I would reccomend trust and betrayal as well as reflection to anyone who has seen the entire series of Rurouni Kenshin...

Trust and Betrayal is a must for anyone interested in Kenshin's past...from his childhood, to his training in Hiten Mitsurugi, to his first love, how he got his famous scar, and how he became known as the battousai...if you're looking for meaningless manslaughter, then you probably won't like it as it focuses more on human emotion more than anything...and it also is very depressing...

Reflection is pretty much the closing chapter and a recap of things that already happened...Enishi is introduced again from Trust and Betrayal and the ending is a must see for fans...I especially like what happens to the cross scar and its symbolism...

I never saw the motion picture...so, no comment on this...

I've always wondered something though...who was the new assassin Katsura hired after Kenshin left for Otsu? I have a pretty good guess as to who it is...but I won't say anything...

Personality and Distinguishing Qualities: Kenshin is very formal and polite, and tries to break up arguments. He seems to be the most peaceful person on earth until he has to fight. His "X" scar, pink kimono, and red hair show that he is Kenshin. He seems so childish sometimes, but at the same time a fully grown man. When he was young however he was depressed most of the time, because of war. Ever since he met Kaoru, everything seems to going great.

Anyway I just saw trust and betrayal and it truly was a masterpiece. Ive never seen such spectaular animation before. The fight scenes were great and very bloody. I loved the cast of chacters and the dub was great. I loved Kenshins voice it fit his chacter well. It had a compelling story that kept you begging for more and it was great to see how Kenshin got his x shaped scar. I truly loved this movie and cant wait to start reflection.
